After His Mistress Framed Me, My Husband Lost Everything Novel Cover

After His Mistress Framed Me, My Husband Lost Everything

An ordinary Seattle Tuesday shatters when the narrator scrolls into Baylee Olson's scathing article, 'Trophy Wives With No Ambition,' featuring a candid photo Dario took months ago—despite her begging him to delete it. That single image detonates his secret affair, fractures his carefully constructed empire, and transforms the wife he treated as decoration into the force behind his complete unraveling.

Chapter 5

The notification came at 7:14 a.m.

I was on my second cup of coffee. The kitchen was quiet. I had slept better than I had any right to, the way you sleep after something finally ends—not peacefully, exactly, but completely.

The email was from a law firm I didn't recognize. Three paragraphs. Dense, careful language. The words *defamation*, *malicious intent*, *business associate*, and *formal complaint* arranged themselves in front of me like furniture I hadn't ordered.

I read it twice. Then I set my mug down and straightened it so the handle pointed exactly right.

Dario hadn't called. He hadn't texted. He had filed a complaint.

I went to get dressed.

---

They came for me at 10 a.m. Two officers. Polite enough. I didn't make them wait at the door.

I brought my coat. I left my phone on the counter, screen up, because I wasn't hiding anything. I locked the door behind me.

The processing took two hours. Fingerprints. A photograph. A plastic chair in a room that smelled like industrial cleaner and old coffee. I sat with my hands folded in my lap and I looked at the wall and I did not think about the blue dress or the tasting menu with both our names printed at the top. I thought about the folder on my laptop. I thought about the notebook. I thought about eighteen entries in handwriting that got smaller as the months went on.

I thought: *I have everything I need.*

A woman across the room was crying. I understood the impulse. I just didn't have it anymore.

---

The bail arrangement took another hour. No one told me who had arranged it. I found out when I walked outside.

I heard them before I saw them. The sound hit me first—a wall of it, voices layered over voices, something wet and heavy landing near my feet. I looked down. A split garbage bag. Coffee grounds and something dark spreading across the concrete.

Then another one. Then screaming.

*There she is.*

*Vindictive bitch.*

*You did this to her, you jealous—*

I kept walking.

Something hit my shoulder. I didn't look at what it was. I kept my chin level and my stride even and I looked at the car at the end of the walkway—black, idling, a man in a dark coat standing beside the rear door—and I walked toward it like it was the only thing in the world.

A woman stepped into my path. Her face was close. She was screaming something I didn't process. I looked past her.

Then I felt it—warm and deliberate, on the left side of my jacket collar. A sound came from the crowd that was almost appreciative.

I stopped.

Not because I flinched. I stopped because I wanted to feel it clearly. I wanted to know exactly what this was, what it cost, what it meant. I wanted to hold it in full so I could put it down completely and never pick it up again.

I felt it.

I kept walking.

Somewhere between the garbage and the screaming and the woman's spit drying on my collar, the last thread went. No snap. No sound. Just—gone. Like a held breath finally released. Like a door closing on a room you're never going back to.

I reached the car.

---

The man in the dark coat opened the rear door. He was sixty, maybe, with the contained posture of someone who had stood outside many difficult situations without making them worse.

'Ms. Price,' he said. Not *Mrs. Gray*. *Ms. Price.* 'I'm counsel for your father. He sent me. No conditions.'

I looked at him for a moment.

Nearly a decade. No contact. No conditions.

I got in.

The door closed. The noise outside went muffled, then distant, then nothing as the car pulled away from the curb. I looked out the window at Seattle moving past—the waterfront, the gray sky, the buildings I had walked past for nine years as someone else's wife. I had learned the streets as Dario's partner. I had mapped this city around his ambitions, his office, his late nights, his crises.

None of that was true anymore.

I thought about the first piece of jewelry I sold. My grandmother's sapphire bracelet. I had told myself it was a loan. I had told myself I'd buy it back when things were better. I never did. There were seven more after that. A pearl set. A gold cuff. A ring I had worn since I was sixteen.

I thought about the technology license I had arranged quietly, the one buried in Price Corporation's R&D files, the one that made Dario's entire business legally possible.

I thought about the folder. The notebook. Eighteen entries.

I thought: *I have been ready for a long time.*

The attorney didn't speak. He understood, I think, that this wasn't a moment for words.

I watched the city pass. I breathed.

And somewhere on the bridge over the water, I stopped being the woman who had been trying to save something.

I became the woman who was going to end it.
