After His Mistress Framed Me, My Husband Lost Everything

An ordinary Seattle Tuesday shatters when the narrator scrolls into Baylee Olson's scathing article, 'Trophy Wives With No Ambition,' featuring a candid photo Dario took months ago—despite her begging him to delete it. That single image detonates his secret affair, fractures his carefully constructed empire, and transforms the wife he treated as decoration into the force behind his complete unraveling.

Chapter 2

The video hit my feed at 6:47 p.m.

Baylee Olson, standing on the railing at Elliott Bay pier, hair whipping in the wind, mascara running in two clean lines down her face. Below her, dark water. Behind the camera, a friend's voice, breathless: "Oh my god, oh my god, someone call someone—"

Then Dario's voice, off-screen, arriving like a rescue. "Baylee. Baylee, look at me. Come down. Please."

She came down. She folded into his arms. The caption underneath, posted by the friend—Nadia something, I didn't know her—read: *This is what online hate does to a person. She didn't deserve any of this.*

The comments had already found me. Not by name. Just enough.

*We know who did this to her.*

*Some wives can't handle competition so they destroy people instead.*

I read it twice. Then I called Dario. He didn't pick up. I texted him. *Is she okay?* Three dots appeared, then disappeared, then nothing.

He hadn't called me first. He hadn't called me at all.

I sat with that for a long moment, the phone warm in my hand, the kitchen going dark around me as the sun dropped behind the building across the street. Then I did what I do when I don't trust a feeling. I looked for facts.

---

The pier belonged to a private marina. I knew the manager slightly—Dario had done a sponsorship thing with them two summers ago, a launch party with a boat and too much champagne. I called the front office and said I was following up on an incident report for insurance purposes. It wasn't exactly a lie.

They had a fixed camera covering the maintenance ladder, the one that ran down to the lower dock. I asked for the footage from six to seven that evening. The woman on the phone hesitated, then said she'd need something in writing. I sent it from Dario's company email address, which I still had access to, which I probably shouldn't have used, and which I didn't feel even a flicker of guilt about.

The file came through an hour later.

I watched it standing at the counter, coffee going cold beside my laptop.

There was Baylee, four minutes after the rescue, climbing down the ladder herself. No one helping her. No trembling. She reached the lower dock, checked her reflection in her phone screen, smoothed her hair, and laughed—an actual laugh, head tipped back—at something the friend said. Then she took her phone out and started typing, thumbs moving fast, before the two of them walked off together like they were headed to get drinks.

I watched it three times. Then I made three copies and put them on a flash drive, my laptop, and my phone. I got my coat.

---

Dario's apartment door was unlocked. I let myself in.

Baylee was on his sofa, wrapped in one of his sweatshirts, a mug of tea untouched on the table in front of her. Dario was crouched near her, one hand on her knee. He looked up when I walked in, and something in his face braced itself.

"Lara, this isn't a good time—"

"I know." I set my laptop on the coffee table and opened it. "I won't stay long."

I turned the screen toward the television, cast it, and pressed play.

The footage filled the room. Baylee on the ladder. Baylee laughing. Baylee typing on her phone like a woman with somewhere to be.

The sound in the apartment changed instantly. Baylee's breath caught, high and fast. "Turn it off," she said. "Turn it off, why would you—" Her hands went to her chest. She started to shake. "I can't—I can't breathe—"

I didn't turn it off.

Dario moved to her, murmuring, one arm around her shoulders, the other hand smoothing her hair back from her face like she was something breaking in real time. "Baylee. Baylee, hey. Look at me."

Her phone was on the coffee table, screen up, still logged into the app where the original video lived—the one with four hundred thousand views and climbing. I picked it up.

"Lara, don't—"

I dropped it on the hardwood floor and stepped on it. The screen spidered. I stepped on it again until the glass gave and the phone stopped lighting up entirely.

Baylee's sobbing hit a new register, something almost operatic.

Dario grabbed my arm—not hard, but enough—and pulled me into the hallway, out of her sight line. He shut the door partway behind us.

"What the hell was that," he said, voice low, tight.

"That was evidence." I held up my laptop. "I have three copies. That was hers."

He looked back toward the living room, where Baylee's crying had softened into something wetter, quieter, performative even in its diminishment. He rubbed a hand down his face.

"She's been a lot lately," he said. Just that. Quiet. Almost to himself.

I stood there in the hallway light, and something in my chest loosened for the first time in weeks. It wasn't much. It wasn't an apology. It wasn't even really about me.

But it was the first true thing he'd said in a month, and I let myself believe it was the beginning of something—that he'd finally seen the shape of what I'd been trying to show him.

I didn't know yet how wrong I was.
