After His Mistress Framed Me, I Took Everything Back

For seven years I stood beside billionaire Karson Dixon, never missing an anniversary. Tonight I chose an ivory dress—quiet, deliberate, the armor of a wife who refuses to break. Then his mistress framed me, and the woman who held herself together by sheer will shattered. No more smiling for cameras. No more playing the perfect wife. I'm taking back my name, my power, my life—and I won't stop until every one of them pays.

Chapter 4

I found the first document by accident.

It was a Tuesday. Karson had left his study door open — he'd stopped closing it around me, the way you stop locking a cabinet when you decide there's nothing inside worth stealing. I walked past and saw the folder on his desk, half-open, a name printed at the top in clean corporate font.

Cataleya Harper. Beneficiary designation. Effective immediately.

I stood in the doorway for a moment. Then I walked in, took out my phone, and photographed it.

My hands didn't shake. That surprised me.

I put the phone back in my pocket and walked out. Karson was downstairs with his coffee and his morning calls, talking to someone about the honeymoon suite at the Amalfi property, laughing at something the other person said. His voice drifted up the stairs, easy and warm. The voice of a man who was having a good morning.

I went back to the bedroom and sat on the edge of the bed.

I thought: that's the third one this week.

Then I thought: keep going.

---

He stopped pretending around the same time.

Not the pretending he'd always done — the social performance, the right words at the right dinners. That he kept up fine. What he stopped was the smaller pretending. The courtesy of it. The thin, perfunctory gestures that had once signaled that he was at least aware I was in the room.

He talked about Cataleya the way you talk about weather. Casually. Continuously. Without checking whether the person across the table had any interest in the subject.

'Cataleya wants ivory roses for the centerpieces,' he said one morning, not looking up from his phone. 'Can you call the florist and confirm the order?'

I looked at him.

'Karson,' I said.

'Mm.'

'I'm your wife.'

He looked up then. His expression was patient. Slightly puzzled, the way you look at someone who has said something technically true but contextually irrelevant.

'I know that,' he said. And then he looked back at his phone.

That was the whole conversation.

I pressed my thumb against my wrist under the table and held it there until the feeling passed. Then I went upstairs, opened his study, and photographed four more documents.

---

I got better at it.

I learned his schedule — not because I was watching him, but because he'd stopped bothering to hide it. Conference calls at seven. Lunch with Marcus on Thursdays. Cataleya in the office until eight, sometimes nine. He left his laptop open. He left his phone face-up on the kitchen counter. He had, I realized, the specific carelessness of a man who believes the only person in the house poses no threat.

Eleanor left the study unlocked on the mornings she knew he'd be out.

She never said that directly. She just left it unlocked, and I understood.

I photographed bank transfers. I photographed correspondence with lawyers I didn't recognize. I photographed a single email from a number I didn't know, sent to Karson's private account, that contained one line: *She's still in the house. That's a problem.*

I read it twice.

Then I photographed it, closed the laptop, and went downstairs to make myself tea.

My hands still didn't shake. I was starting to understand that this was not composure. It was something colder than composure. Something that had been building for weeks in the quiet space behind my eyes, in the long nights alone in that bedroom, in the moment I pressed send on a message to a number I hadn't touched in seven years.

I was waiting. I just didn't know what for yet.

---

Cataleya texted me that Friday about the rehearsal dinner seating chart.

I answered her. I was polite. I suggested the round tables over the rectangular ones, because the room at The Plaza would flow better that way.

She sent back a heart emoji.

I put the phone down and looked out the window at the grey November sky and thought about the email. *She's still in the house. That's a problem.*

Not she's still married to him. Not she hasn't signed the papers.

She's still in the house.

I turned that over for a long time.

Then I took the burner phone out of the bottom of my bag — the one with one contact, the one I'd carried for three years without using — and I looked at it.

No response. Still no response. Maybe the number was dead. Maybe he'd moved. Maybe seven years was too long and I had used up whatever I'd once been to him.

I put it back.

I went upstairs.

I photographed two more documents.

And somewhere in the back of my mind, something very quiet and very certain said: *whatever is coming, be ready.*
