After His Mistress Framed Me, I Took Everything Back

For seven years I stood beside billionaire Karson Dixon, never missing an anniversary. Tonight I chose an ivory dress—quiet, deliberate, the armor of a wife who refuses to break. Then his mistress framed me, and the woman who held herself together by sheer will shattered. No more smiling for cameras. No more playing the perfect wife. I'm taking back my name, my power, my life—and I won't stop until every one of them pays.

Chapter 5

I knew it was coming before the SUV even left the road.

Not the crash itself. Not the specific physics of it — the black sedan that drifted into our lane, the sickening lurch as our driver overcorrected, the guardrail rising up like a wall. But something. I'd felt it building all week, quiet and certain, the way you feel a storm before the sky changes color.

The first roll knocked the air out of me. The second one took the world with it.

When everything stopped moving, I was on my side. The passenger door was pressed inward — not a lot, but enough. Enough that my hip was pinned and my left arm was wrong and there was something warm running down my face that I didn't look at directly.

Cataleya was already moving.

I watched her through the cracked windshield. She'd been in the back seat. She climbed out through the rear door with the careful, deliberate movements of someone who had rehearsed this — or at least had thought about it. Her hair was down on one side. She had a cut above her cheekbone, shallow, the kind that photographs beautifully. She stood on the shoulder of the Long Island Expressway in the cold November light and made a phone call.

She didn't look at me once.

I pressed my thumb against my wrist. The gesture felt very far away.

Karson arrived in eleven minutes. I know the number because I watched the clock on the shattered dashboard the entire time, because it was the only thing I could do that didn't require moving.

He pulled up fast. Got out of the car. Walked to Cataleya.

He didn't look at the passenger side.

He lifted her into his arms — she made a small sound, something soft and pained, perfectly calibrated — and he carried her to his car. He opened the door. He settled her inside. He walked around to the driver's side.

He drove away.

I watched his taillights until they disappeared.

Then I was alone.

The wind came through the broken window and it was very cold and the dashboard clock said 4:47 and somewhere in the distance there were sirens that were not close enough yet. My vision was doing something I didn't like. The warmth on my face had reached my jaw.

I thought: okay.

I thought: this is what it is.

I thought: not like this.

I got my right hand to my coat pocket. The burner phone was there — it was always there, three years of carrying it, one contact, never used. My fingers weren't working the way I needed them to. I dropped it once. I picked it up.

I dialed.

It rang once.

It rang twice.

The line opened.

I said: "Leo." My voice came out smaller than I intended. "I think I'm dying."

Silence. One second. Two.

Then his breathing — and I knew it immediately, seven years later, I knew it like a language I'd never actually forgotten — ragged, a man coming apart at the seams and holding himself together by his teeth.

"Tell me where you are right now."

His voice was barely human. But it was there. It was there on the second ring and it was there now and something in my chest cracked open like ice in March.

"Long Island Expressway," I said. My vision was narrowing at the edges, a slow gray closing in. "Mile marker forty-seven. I'm in the — the car is against the guardrail. Passenger side."

"I'm coming." Not a question. Not a promise. A fact, delivered with the absolute certainty of a man who has already decided. "Stay on the line. Don't hang up."

"Okay," I said.

I held the phone against my ear and listened to him breathe and the gray kept coming and I thought about Eleanor's tea. The blue cup with the chip on the handle. The paper in my coat pocket. The camera in the south hallway that still recorded.

I thought: not yet. Not yet.

Then the world went dark.

---

He was there before the second emergency unit.

I know this because I came back to consciousness in pieces — sound first, voices, the crunch of boots on broken glass — and the first thing I felt was a hand around mine. Not holding it. Gripping it. Like a man who has been looking for something for seven years and is not capable, in this moment, of letting go.

"She's breathing," he said. His voice was very controlled. The kind of controlled that costs everything. "Pulse is weak. Head laceration, left side. Possible internal — yes. Yes, I'll hold."

He was on the phone with the paramedics. He was relaying my vitals. His thumb moved once across the back of my hand — just once, just a small thing — and then he was still.

Behind him, I would learn later, his security team was already moving through the wreckage. Photographing tire marks. Documenting the point of impact. Bagging a piece of the black sedan's paint transfer from our guardrail.

All of it before the emergency lights stopped flashing.

All of it before anyone asked them to.

I didn't know any of that yet. I just knew the hand. I just knew he'd answered on the second ring. I just knew that when I finally opened my eyes in the back of that ambulance, the first thing I saw was Leonidas Wheeler — gaunt, sleepless, seven years written across his face like a wound — looking at me like I was the only thing in the world that had ever mattered.

He didn't say anything.

Neither did I.

I closed my fingers around his and held on.
