After His Mistress Framed Me, I Took Everything Back Novel Cover

After His Mistress Framed Me, I Took Everything Back

For seven years I stood beside billionaire Karson Dixon, never missing an anniversary. Tonight I chose an ivory dress—quiet, deliberate, the armor of a wife who refuses to break. Then his mistress framed me, and the woman who held herself together by sheer will shattered. No more smiling for cameras. No more playing the perfect wife. I'm taking back my name, my power, my life—and I won't stop until every one of them pays.

Chapter 3

I don't know how long I lay on the floor of Marcus Hale's living room before I got up.

At some point the laughter stopped. At some point Karson left with Cataleya, and Marcus and the Whitfield brothers got bored, and the bridesmaids disappeared into other rooms. At some point it was just me and the broken glass and the wine soaked into my dress like a bruise.

I drove myself home. I don't remember most of it.

The Dixon house was dark when I got in. I climbed the stairs without turning on any lights. I sat on the edge of the bed in my ruined dress and looked at my hands for a long time. My right arm had a cut along the forearm — not deep, but ugly, already purpling at the edges. My temple throbbed. My hip felt like something had been knocked loose inside it.

I pressed my thumb against the inside of my wrist.

I thought: I sent that message. I actually sent it.

Then I thought: he probably changed the number.

Then I thought: it doesn't matter. The phone was a burner. I'd bought it three years ago in a moment of something I couldn't name, loaded one contact into it, and put it in the bottom of my bag. I'd carried it with me every day since without ever once intending to use it.

I fell asleep still in my dress.

---

Two thousand miles away — or maybe less, I didn't know where he was anymore — Leonidas Wheeler's phone was in his security chief's hands during a communication lockdown. A board meeting. A hostile acquisition. Something that required fourteen hours of complete signal blackout.

He got the message at two in the morning.

I know this because Eleanor told me later, in her precise, unhurried way, the way she told me everything — like she was reading from a document she'd memorized years ago and was only now being permitted to recite.

The message was a photograph. My wrist. The bruise already dark against my skin. And three words beneath it.

*I need help.*

I don't know what he did when he read it. Eleanor didn't know either. What she knew — what she'd heard through channels I didn't ask her to name — was that the lights in the Wheeler Industries tower stayed on until dawn. That a private jet was fueled at Teterboro within the hour. That his security chief made fourteen phone calls before sunrise trying to locate a burner number that had already gone dark.

I thought about that sometimes. The image of it. Leonidas in that glass tower at two in the morning, holding his phone, reading three words I'd sent fourteen hours too late.

I hoped it hurt him.

Then I felt sick for hoping that.

Then I thought: good. Let it hurt. Let someone else carry something for a change.

---

I came back to the Dixon house the next morning like I always did. Quiet. Careful. I changed into something clean and pressed — grey, because grey was what I wore, grey was safe, grey didn't ask anything of anyone — and I went downstairs.

Eleanor was already in the kitchen.

She set a cup of tea in front of me without a word. The same tea. The same cup. The blue one with the small chip on the handle that she'd been using for me since my first month in this house, when I was still trying to learn where everything went and how everything worked and what version of myself was required here.

I wrapped both hands around it.

She stood there for a moment. Just stood there, the way she always did — present and still and saying nothing, which was the only way she'd ever been able to say everything.

Then she went back to the counter and started on breakfast, and I drank my tea, and neither of us mentioned the cut on my arm or the bruise at my temple or the fact that I was sitting in this kitchen like nothing had happened because there was nowhere else to sit.

---

That night I found it.

A folded piece of paper in the pocket of my coat. Small. Precise. Eleanor's handwriting — I recognized it from the grocery lists she left on the counter, the same controlled, unhurried script.

A date. A time.

And five words: *The south hallway camera still records.*

I read it twice. Then I stood in the coat closet for a long moment with the paper in my hand, the wool of my coat pressed against my cheek, and I breathed.

Eleanor had been in this house for twenty years. She had seen everything. She had kept her head down and her mouth shut and her hands clean, the way you had to, the way we all had to, when the house belonged to someone like Karson.

But she'd kept the camera running.

She'd been waiting. Not for the right moment — for me. She'd been waiting for me to be ready.

I folded the paper and put it back in my pocket.

Somewhere, a private jet was still on the ground, and a man who had spent seven years looking for me still didn't know where I was.

But I was starting to think that maybe I did.
