After His Fiancée Killed Our Son Novel Cover

After His Fiancée Killed Our Son

Marble and money coat every inch of Carr Industries, but the receptionist's polished smile doesn't reach her eyes. I hold Charlie against my chest, his heart fluttering like a trapped bird, and demand to see Elliot Carr—the billionaire whose fiancée killed our son. I rehearsed the words in the cab, yet nothing prepares me for the man behind those doors. I came for answers, for justice, for something I can't name. I won't leave until I get it, even if the truth shatters us both.

Chapter 4

The phone rings at 2 a.m. I don't recognize the number. Oregon area code. I stare at it until it stops. Then I stare at the missed call notification.

I call back.

A woman answers. Her voice is careful. Like she's holding something fragile.

"Is this Elia Stone?"

"Yes."

"This is Margaret Chen. I live next door to your grandmother. I'm so sorry, honey. I've been trying to reach you for days."

The apartment is very quiet. I can hear the refrigerator humming in the kitchen.

"What happened?"

"She collapsed four days ago. In her kitchen. The ambulance came but—" She stops. Starts again. "She was already gone. Heart attack, they said. The hospital tried to call. I don't know why it didn't go through."

Four days.

I was sorting photographs four days ago. I was deleting email accounts. I was buying a black dress.

"The funeral home has been holding—" Margaret's voice cracks. "I'm so sorry. She talked about you all the time. She was so proud."

I don't remember what I say next. Thank you, maybe. I'll be there soon. Something that sounds like words.

I hang up.

I sit down on the kitchen floor. The linoleum is cold. I press my palms flat against it. I count the tiles I can see without moving my head. Twelve.

I don't cry.

I sit there for two hours. The light changes outside the window. Dawn comes in gray and slow. My legs go numb.

When I stand up, my face feels different. Like a mask that doesn't fit anymore.

I pack the carry-on. The black dress. The folder with the photographs and letters and the cremation certificate. Charlie's urn, wrapped in a towel. I leave everything else.

The drive to Oregon takes two days. I stop once to sleep in a motel parking lot and wake up not remembering where I am. The second day I don't stop at all.

The cottage looks exactly the same. White paint peeling near the door frame. The porch swing Grandmother Stone never sat on because she said it made her dizzy. Lavender growing wild along the fence.

Margaret meets me on the porch. She's older than she sounded on the phone. She hugs me without asking. I stand very still until she lets go.

"I cleaned up," she says quietly. "I hope that's alright. I couldn't just leave it."

"Thank you."

She hands me the key. "Take all the time you need, honey."

Inside, the cottage smells like lavender and old wood and something else I can't name. Absence, maybe. The photographs are everywhere. Me at seven in a red sweater, one front tooth missing. Me at graduation. Me holding a cake I made that collapsed in the middle, both of us laughing.

I walk to the kitchen.

The floor is clean. Margaret scrubbed it. But I know the spot. Right there, between the table and the sink. I stand on it. I close my eyes.

She died alone.

She died afraid.

Haven's men came here. They knocked on this door. They said things that stopped her heart.

I open my eyes.

The funeral home is a small building on Main Street. The director is kind. He doesn't ask questions. He brings out a simple wooden urn and sets it on the desk between us.

"She prepaid years ago," he says. "Everything was arranged."

Of course it was. She always planned ahead. She always took care of things.

I drive back to the cottage. I sit on the couch with both urns in my lap. Charlie's brushed pewter. Grandmother Stone's polished wood. I hold them and I let myself feel it. All of it. The weight. The emptiness. The rage that sits so deep it doesn't have a temperature anymore.

I cry until my throat closes. Until my chest hurts. Until there's nothing left.

Then I stop.

I wash my face in the kitchen sink. I look at myself in the small mirror by the door. My eyes are red. My face is blotchy. I look like someone who has been crying.

By tomorrow, I won't.

I sleep in Grandmother Stone's bed. The sheets smell like her lavender soap. I wake up once in the dark and forget where I am. Then I remember.

In the morning, I pack both urns carefully in the carry-on. I lock the cottage. I leave the key with Margaret.

"Will you come back?" she asks.

I look at the cottage. The peeling paint. The wild lavender. The porch swing.

"No," I say.

The drive back to New York is faster. I don't stop. I don't sleep. I drink gas station coffee and watch the highway lines blur past.

Saturday is two days away.

I have everything I need now. The photographs. The letters. The recording. The death certificate. And two urns that weigh almost nothing and everything at the same time.

I park outside my apartment building and sit in the car for a long time. The black dress is hanging in the closet upstairs. The lanyard is in the trash can on Amsterdam. The Plaza Hotel is twelve blocks away.

I get out of the car.

I don't look back.
