After His Fiancée Killed Our Son Novel Cover

After His Fiancée Killed Our Son

Marble and money coat every inch of Carr Industries, but the receptionist's polished smile doesn't reach her eyes. I hold Charlie against my chest, his heart fluttering like a trapped bird, and demand to see Elliot Carr—the billionaire whose fiancée killed our son. I rehearsed the words in the cab, yet nothing prepares me for the man behind those doors. I came for answers, for justice, for something I can't name. I won't leave until I get it, even if the truth shatters us both.

Chapter 5

The lanyard is exactly where Sophie said it would be. Blue, coiled around a cardboard coffee cup at the bottom of the trash can outside her stoop on Amsterdam. I don't look up at her window. I don't look at anyone. I slide the lanyard into my coat pocket and keep walking.

The Plaza's service entrance faces 58th Street. I stand across the street for twenty minutes first, drinking bad coffee from a paper cup and watching. A line of catering staff comes and goes through the side door, badges swinging at their chests. Nobody checks them at the threshold. I count the interval between the security guard's smoke breaks. Nine minutes. Twelve. Nine again.

At four-fifteen I cross the street.

The lanyard reads *Sophie Adler — Banquet Services*. I keep my chin down and my hair loose over the photograph on the card. The guard doesn't look up from his phone. The service corridor smells like bleach and steam trays and warm bread. Somewhere down the hall a walk-in freezer hums.

I count doors. Past the linen closet. Past the ice machine. Second door on the left.

The east prep corridor is narrow and empty. A stainless steel panel sits waist-high in the wall, the words *AUDIO — ZONE 3* stenciled above it. I open the cover. Inside: three inputs, a Bluetooth pairing button, a small blue LED.

I pull my phone from my pocket.

My hands are steady. That still surprises me.

I press the button. The LED blinks. My phone finds the signal on the third try. *Connected.* I open the audio file. I press play, very softly, the volume all the way down.

Somewhere overhead, in the ballroom I haven't set foot in yet, Haven Reyes's voice is playing through five hundred thousand dollars of speakers.

*Consider this a mercy.*

I stop the playback after two seconds.

I disconnect. I close the panel. I walk back down the corridor at the same pace I came in.

Out on 58th Street, the wind has picked up. I walk to the corner and time the route from the service door to the ballroom's north entrance. Ninety-three seconds if I don't rush. Sixty-two if I do.

I won't rush.

Back at the apartment, I lay everything out on the kitchen table one more time. The photographs stacked in the order I'll drop them — the diner booth first, because that's where it started; the ultrasound near the top, because that's what he never came to see. The letters folded loose so they'll scatter when they hit the marble. The cremation certificate on top, edges squared. In a separate envelope, three copies of the audio file on three cheap USB drives, in case something goes wrong with the Bluetooth.

I check the phone battery. Ninety-four percent. I plug it in anyway.

There is a television in the corner I haven't turned on in weeks. I turn it on now. Not for company. For information.

A morning show is running a segment on the wedding. *The Event of the Decade.* Footage of The Plaza's ballroom being dressed with white orchids. A stylist gushing over Haven's dress. Then — a clip of Elliot at some press conference two days ago, shaking hands with a Reyes cousin, his jaw tight and his eyes flat and his tie the same charcoal gray he wore the night he proposed nothing to me.

He looks thinner. Or maybe I'm imagining it.

I wonder, for a moment, what he is doing right now. Whether he is sitting in his office on the forty-second floor, opening a drawer I was never allowed to see, running his fingers over papers he never showed me. Deeds. Trust documents. Whatever careful architecture he built in silence while our son was learning to breathe on borrowed air.

He hasn't called. Eleven days.

He doesn't know Charlie is dead.

He doesn't know Grandmother Stone is dead.

He thinks I am somewhere in this city, still waiting. Still folding into the shape he decided I should hold. He thinks distance is a kindness he can afford.

I turn the television off.

Somewhere in a Midtown hotel suite, Haven Reyes is opening a bottle of champagne. I know this the way you know the weather without looking — the shape of a woman like that, the night before a coronation. She'll pour a glass for herself. She'll toast the mirror. She'll lay her dress out on the bed the way a soldier lays out a weapon.

Her people have told her I've disappeared. No digital presence. No known location. No activity.

Good.

I want her to sleep well tonight.

I take a shower. I wash my hair. I don't cry in there — I checked the mirror before I got in, and I looked like a woman who has already finished crying, and I need that face to stay put.

I lay the black dress across the back of the chair. High neck. Long sleeves. Nothing that draws the eye until I want it to.

On the nightstand, the two urns sit side by side. Brushed pewter. Polished wood. I put my hand on each one in turn. I don't speak to them. I don't need to. Whatever I say tomorrow, in that room, in front of those cameras — I will be saying it to them.

I set the alarm for six.

I turn out the light.

I press my thumbnail into my palm, just once, in the dark. Just to know I can still feel it.

Then I close my eyes and I sleep, deeply, without dreams, for the last time in the life I am about to end.
