Chapter 5

I checked myself into the hospital on a Thursday morning. I'd been dizzy for three days. Couldn't keep food down. My hands shook when I tried to hold things.

The nurse took one look at my chart and her face changed.

"When was your last blood donation?"

"Two weeks ago."

"And before that?"

"Two weeks before that."

She didn't say anything. She just started an IV.

They put me in a curtained bay in the ER. Not a room. Just a space with fabric walls and a chair that turned into a bed if you pulled a lever. The IV drip was cold going in. I watched the bag above my head. Clear liquid. Whatever I'd given away, they were putting back.

I closed my eyes. The sounds of the ER filtered through the curtain. Phones ringing. Wheels on linoleum. Someone coughing three bays down.

Then I heard his voice.

Mason. In the next bay. Maybe ten feet away. The curtain between us was thin. Institutional blue. I could see his shadow through it.

He was on the phone.

"I understand the concern," he said. "But the timeline is fixed. We move at the gala or we don't move at all."

Silence. He was listening.

"The Harvey contracts are signed. Peter's already committed. If we wait, we lose the leverage."

I opened my eyes. I stared at the curtain. At his shadow.

"No," he said. "She doesn't know. And she won't."

My chest tightened.

"Look," Mason continued. His voice dropped. Not softer. Harder. "I made the call three years ago and I'd make it again. The situation was complicated. The car accident—if I'd intervened, if I'd pulled her out of that schedule, questions would have been asked. Peter was already watching. A pregnancy at that exact moment would have compromised the entire operation."

I stopped breathing.

"It was unfortunate," he said. "But it was necessary."

The IV drip kept going. Steady. Rhythmic. I could hear it.

"She grieved," Mason said. "I let her. It was better that way. Clean."

Something in my chest cracked. Not my ribs. Something deeper.

"I'm handling it," he said. "She's not a problem. She's never been a problem. That's the point."

He hung up.

I heard him stand. Heard his footsteps. Heard the curtain pull back in the next bay. Heard him leave.

I sat there. The IV drip kept going. My arm was cold. My whole body was cold.

A pregnancy would have compromised the entire operation.

I made the call three years ago and I'd make it again.

She's not a problem.

I looked down at my left hand. The silver band. Ten years. I'd worn it every single day. Through fish markets and hospital shifts and nights I couldn't afford heat. I'd worn it when he didn't wear his. I'd worn it like a promise.

He'd let our baby die because it was inconvenient.

He'd called it necessary.

The nurse came back. She checked the IV bag. She smiled.

"Almost done. You're doing great."

I nodded. I didn't speak. I wasn't sure I could.

When the bag was empty, she unhooked me. She gave me a list of foods to eat. Iron supplements. Instructions to rest.

"Take care of yourself," she said.

I signed the discharge papers. I walked out of the ER. I took the subway home.

The apartment was empty. Mason wasn't there. He was never there anymore.

I went to the bedroom. I pulled a duffel bag from the closet. I packed one pair of jeans. Two shirts. Underwear. Socks. My toothbrush. The paperback on my nightstand.

I didn't pack the dresses. I didn't pack the shoes. I didn't pack anything he'd ever seen me wear.

I went to his desk. I opened the top drawer. The silver band was still there. The one I'd given him ten years ago. The one he'd never worn. It sat on top of a stack of business cards. Untouched. Forgotten.

I picked it up.

I walked to the kitchen. I opened the trash can. I looked at both rings. Mine. His. Matching. Cheap. The only thing we'd ever bought together when we had nothing.

I dropped them in.

They hit the bottom. A soft sound. Like something breaking that was already broken.

I didn't leave a note. There was nothing to say. Nothing he would understand. Nothing that mattered.

I picked up my bag. I locked the door behind me. I took a cab to JFK.

At the ticket counter, I asked for the next flight out. Anywhere. The woman typed.

"Miami," she said. "Leaves in two hours."

"I'll take it."

I paid with the last of my savings. Six hundred dollars. Everything I had left.

I sat at the gate. I didn't call anyone. I didn't text. I turned off my phone.

I looked at my left hand. The pale line where the ring had been. Ten years of pressure. Ten years of weight.

It was gone now.

When they called my row, I stood. I walked down the jetway. I found my seat by the window. I buckled in.

The plane lifted. Manhattan got smaller. Then it disappeared.

I pressed my forehead against the glass. I closed my eyes.

I didn't cry. I was too tired to cry.

I just sat there. Feeling lighter than I'd felt in a decade.

And I didn't look back.
