Chapter 4

"What is on this, Helen?" I asked, sliding the scratched silver metal into the port of my laptop.

Twelve yellow folder icons populated the screen. Each bore a simple label. Age Five. Age Six. Age Seven. All the way to Age Sixteen.

"Every receipt, every tracking number, every photo of the gifts you bought him," Helen said, her voice barely above a whisper. "I kept the digital copies. I was the one dropping those packages at the post office for you."

I clicked the folder marked Age Sixteen. A scanned receipt for the custom carbon-fiber tennis racket I bought last month filled the screen.

"Every year since he turned five," Helen continued, stepping closer to the mahogany table. "You spent hours picking out those items. The limited-edition action figures, the imported art supplies, the custom sports gear."

"And Noah never questioned why they stopped coming with a return address?" I asked.

"Mr. Whitmore told him the corporate sponsors preferred to remain anonymous," Helen explained, twisting the fabric of her gray apron. "But last week, Noah opened the racket in the kitchen. He told his father that Maya must have reminded him to order it, because Maya knows he loves tennis."

My jaw tightened. "And Daniel?"

"He smiled and let the boy believe it."

I ejected the drive and pulled it from the port. I did not shed a single tear. The hollow ache in my chest had hardened into solid ice. My husband and my son had taken my quiet devotion and handed the credit to another woman.

"Thank you, Helen," I said, slipping the drive into my pocket. "Go to bed now."

"Mrs. Whitmore, please do not do this hastily," she pleaded. "You have built a life here."

"Goodnight, Helen."

I carried the laptop upstairs to my bedroom and pulled my black hard-shell suitcase from the top shelf of the closet. I dropped it onto the mattress. The metal zipper parted with a loud, grating sound that swallowed the silence of the room.

I walked over to the bookshelf. I grabbed the six leather-bound memory albums I had painstakingly assembled over the past decade. I ran my fingers over the gold embossed letters on the cover of the first album. Noah's First Year. I stacked them into the bottom of the suitcase.

Next went the manila envelope containing the three-million-dollar education trust. Finally, I opened my nightstand drawer and pulled out my thick file of post-donation hospital reports. The edges of the paper were worn from years of constant handling. My side throbbed, a sharp reminder of the surgery that had saved his life and permanently altered mine.

No clothes. No shoes. No jewelry. Just the proof of what I had given this family.

The front door chimed downstairs. Heavy footsteps echoed through the foyer.

"Clara?" Daniel called out, his voice carrying up the curved staircase. "Why is the dining room light still on?"

I zipped the suitcase shut. I grabbed the damp divorce papers from my tote bag and walked out to the landing.

Daniel stood at the bottom of the stairs, loosening his silk tie. The heavy scent of artificial strawberry and spun sugar clung to his clothes, drifting up the steps and invading my space. He looked up, his brow furrowing as I descended the steps.

"You are awake," he noted.

"I was waiting for you."

I reached the bottom step and held out the printed pages.

Daniel glanced at the papers, then back at my face. "What is this?"

"Read the top line."

He snatched the document from my hand. His eyes scanned the bold text. A deep crease formed between his eyebrows.

"Marriage Dissolution Agreement," he read aloud, his tone flat. He looked up, his expression shifting from confusion to immediate annoyance. "Are you out of your mind?"

"Sign it," I said.

"You are throwing a tantrum over a birthday cake," Daniel snapped, tossing the papers onto the entryway console. "I told you I had an emergency board meeting. We grabbed dinner afterward. Stop acting crazy over a minor scheduling conflict."

"You reserved the glass conservatory at Le Petit Chateau for your assistant," I replied, keeping my voice steady. "You bought her a custom cake. You wrote her a card thanking her for making this house happy. Do not call me crazy, Daniel."

He froze. His hand dropped from his tie. "You followed us?"

"I went to my birthday dinner."

"Clara, Maya has been working ninety-hour weeks," he argued, taking a step toward me. "She needed a morale boost. Noah just tagged along because he likes her. It means nothing."

"It means you spent my birthday celebrating the woman who took over my sunroom."

"She needed space to paint," Daniel fired back. "You are blowing a few paintbrushes out of proportion. You always do this. You manufacture drama when there is none."

"Manufacture drama?" I echoed.

"Yes. You sit in this house all day, obsessing over your pills and your scars, and you invent reasons to be a victim. You have been acting paranoid and unhinged all week."

"I gave Noah a kidney," I said, staring directly into his eyes. "I spent twelve years mailing him anonymous gifts so he would not feel neglected by you. And you let him thank Maya for the tennis racket I bought him."

Daniel crossed his arms. "He is a teenager. He gets confused. You expect me to correct every little mistake he makes?"

"I expect my husband to remember my birthday."

"I buy you expensive things all the time," Daniel said, his voice rising in frustration. "You have a closet full of designer bags. You drive a luxury SUV. I provide everything for you, and you want to throw our marriage away because I bought my assistant a cake?"

"I saw the paper crown, Daniel. I saw Noah place it on her head."

"It was a piece of cardboard," he scoffed. "You are acting like a jealous teenager. It is embarrassing."

"Embarrassing is walking into a restaurant and realizing your family replaced you."

I picked up the papers from the console and pulled a pen from my pocket. I pushed both toward his chest.

"I do not care about the bags or the car," I said. "I am done. I want nothing. Keep the house. Keep the vehicles. Keep the jewelry you bought me to apologize for missing our anniversaries. Just sign your name."

Daniel stared at the pen in my hand. His jaw muscles flexed.

"You think I will not sign this?" he challenged, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "You think you can threaten me with a piece of paper?"

"I expect you to sign it."

He grabbed the pen. He pressed the tip against the blank line next to my signature.

A soft rustle of fabric sounded from the top of the stairs.

"Daniel?" a high-pitched voice called out into the quiet foyer.

I looked up.

Maya stood on the second-floor landing. She wore my vintage ivory silk nightgown, the one I had left folded in the guest room cedar chest last winter. The thin lace straps slipped off her shoulders as she gripped the wooden banister.

"Daniel, is she really leaving?" Maya asked.
