Chapter 5

"Daniel, is she really leaving?" Maya asked.

I stared at the fabric clinging to her frame. The vintage ivory silk caught the light of the foyer chandelier, shimmering against the dark wood of the banister. Ten years ago, Daniel handed me the matching velvet box in Paris for our tenth anniversary. I had folded it away in the guest room cedar chest last winter, preserving the delicate lace.

Now, it draped over his assistant's shoulders.

Maya noticed my gaze. Her hand shot up to her chest. She yanked the thin lace collar tight against her collarbone, her knuckles turning white.

"I am sorry, Clara," Maya stammered, shrinking back against the wooden railing. "I just grabbed the wrong pile from the laundry room. My clothes were soaked from the rain."

"The laundry room is on the first floor," I said, my voice cutting through the quiet space. "The cedar chest is in the guest bedroom on the second floor."

Maya's eyes darted toward Daniel, seeking his protection. "I did not mean to pry. I was just cold. The heating vent in my room was acting up."

"Take it off," I told her.

"Clara, stop," Daniel snapped. He stepped away from the console, leaving the unsigned divorce papers behind. "It is just a piece of fabric."

"It is my anniversary gift."

"She made a mistake," Daniel insisted, waving his hand dismissively. "You are overreacting again."

"A mistake is picking up the wrong towel," I replied. "Digging through a closed cedar chest to find my silk nightgown is a choice."

Maya let out a soft, trembling gasp. "I did not dig through anything. It was sitting on the bed. I swear."

"You are lying," I said.

Maya's mouth trembled. She looked down at the lace gathered in her fist, then back at Daniel as though the truth were something he could overrule.

"I can change," she whispered. "I never wanted to upset anyone."

"Then go change."

She took one step toward the guest room, but Daniel raised a hand.

"She is not walking through the house half-dressed because you decided to stage a confrontation," he said. He shrugged off his suit jacket and climbed the first two stairs. "Put this on."

Maya accepted it with both hands. The jacket swallowed her narrow shoulders, but she pulled it closed gratefully. Watching my husband cover another woman while she stood in my nightgown should have hurt. Instead, it clarified something I had spent months trying not to name.

I was the intruder now.

"How long is she staying here?" I asked.

Daniel stopped on the third step. "We have discussed this."

"No. You announced that she needed the guest room for a few weeks after her father's estate went into probate. That was six months ago. Now she has my sunroom, access to our contractors, and enough confidence to search my cedar chest. So I am asking again. How long?"

Maya's face crumpled on cue. "I can find somewhere else tomorrow. I never meant to become a burden."

"Do not do that," I said.

"Do what?"

"Offer to leave only when you know Daniel will insist you stay."

Daniel came back down the stairs. "Her father pulled me out of a wrecked car when I was twenty-three. I owe Arthur Lane my life. I promised him Maya would never be alone."

"Arthur saved your life," I said. "That does not entitle his daughter to mine."

The words landed harder than I expected. Maya's wet eyes sharpened for an instant before the wounded expression returned.

"I never asked for Clara's life," she said softly. "I only tried to help while she was unwell. Noah needed rides. The house needed someone to manage repairs. You were overwhelmed, Daniel. I stepped in because I care about both of you."

"You stepped into my bedroom storage."

"The guest room is not your bedroom," Daniel said.

"The cedar chest is mine. The nightgown is mine. The piano is mine. The sunroom was mine until you decided her paintings mattered more than the one place in this house where I could breathe."

Daniel rubbed the bridge of his nose. "Everything becomes a territorial dispute with you."

"Because every week I lose another piece of ground."

Maya drew his jacket tighter around herself. "I will pack the art supplies tomorrow."

"You said that last month," I reminded her. "Then you ordered three more easels on Daniel's account."

Her gaze flicked toward the console where the divorce papers lay. "I did not know those were for me. Daniel approved the order."

"Of course he did. He approves everything for you. A studio. A birthday dinner. A place at our table."

"Clara," Daniel warned.

"Did he approve the nightgown too?"

Maya recoiled as if I had slapped her. "That is disgusting. Daniel has never touched me."

"I did not accuse him of touching you. I accused both of you of behaving as though I no longer exist."

Neither of them answered.

The clock in the foyer ticked through the silence. Beside the front door, my suitcase stood upright with six memory albums, a trust deed, and my medical files locked inside. The contents of my life took up less space than Maya's painting supplies.

Daniel followed my gaze. "You packed one suitcase. You will cool down at a hotel, then come home."

"You still think this is temporary."

"Because it is."

I picked up the dissolution agreement and held it out again. The water Helen had spilled earlier had dried in pale ripples along the edge, but my signature remained clear.

"Then sign it," I said. "If I am bluffing, your signature should not matter."

His eyes dropped to the page. For one brief second, uncertainty broke through his anger.

Maya saw it too.

"Daniel," she said, her voice small. "Maybe you should let her go tonight. She is upset, and Noah should not have to wake up to this."

There it was: concern wrapped around a claim. Not our son. Noah. As if she already had the right to decide what he should see inside my home.

"Do not use my child to dismiss me," I said.

"I am trying to protect him."

"You are trying to replace me."

"Clara, please," Maya whispered. "You are frightening me."

I looked at Daniel. "Tell her to take off my nightgown, pack her belongings, and leave this house. Then sign the papers."

His face hardened. He stepped between me and the staircase, shielding Maya from view as though I were the danger in the room.

"Enough!" Daniel shouted.
