Chapter 3

"Yes, Grace," I said into the phone, pushing open the oak door of the Whitmore house. "I am giving up the residency rights."

"Clara, you designed that house," Grace argued, her voice buzzing loudly through the speaker. "You picked out every tile. You supervised the construction while recovering from surgery. You cannot just hand it over to Daniel."

"It is not my home anymore," I replied, slipping off my coat. "Draft the papers. I want to sign them tonight."

"He does not deserve a clean break," Grace shot back. "If you walk away from the property, he gets to keep his perfect setup. He gets the house, the kid, and the assistant."

"I do not care about the real estate," I said. "I care about getting out. Just send the PDF to my printer."

I ended the call and tossed my phone onto the entryway console. The house sat in complete darkness. I bypassed the light switches in the foyer and walked straight up the curved staircase to the second-floor sunroom.

I pushed the glass doors open. The sharp smell of turpentine and wet acrylic hit my face immediately.

I flipped on the single overhead track light. Four large wooden easels crowded the center of the room. Canvases depicting bright, abstract landscapes leaned against my custom wicker chairs. Expensive sable brushes soaked in crystal jars on my reading table. Maya had turned my quiet sanctuary into her personal art studio.

I navigated through the maze of wet paint and dropped to my knees in the far corner. A heavy stack of blank canvases pinned down a familiar gray storage box.

I shoved the canvases aside. They tipped over, clattering aggressively against the hardwood floor. I ignored the mess and pulled the lid off the gray box.

Inside lay thousands of printed photos. Noah at his first tennis match. Noah blowing out seven candles before his illness took hold. Noah holding up a spelling bee trophy.

I dug past the glossy prints and reached the very bottom. My fingers brushed against a thick manila envelope. I pulled it out and unwound the string closure.

The education trust document slid into my lap. The balance printed on the top line read three million dollars.

Three years ago, I sold my mother's heirloom sapphire collection to fund this account. I wanted Noah to have a safety net that had nothing to do with Whitmore Medical Group. Daniel never asked where the money came from. He never even noticed the empty velvet boxes sitting on my closet shelves.

A sharp ping interrupted the silence.

I turned my head. The family iPad rested on a paint-splattered stool near the window. The screen glowed bright in the dim room, displaying a synced audio message from Maya to Daniel's account.

I stood up, walked over to the stool, and tapped the play icon.

Maya's high-pitched voice filled the sunroom. "Daniel, sweetie? I was just thinking about the living room layout. Can we move Clara's old piano into the storage unit tomorrow? I really need a good spot to display all these gorgeous birthday flowers you bought me."

I stared at the screen as the audio progress bar reached the end.

Move the piano. The same piano my father bought me when I was twelve years old. The one I used to play for Noah to help him sleep through the pain of his kidney disease.

My husband was letting his assistant erase my history from the house, piece by piece.

I picked up the iPad, held it over the metal trash can, and dropped it. The glass screen cracked against the rim before hitting the bottom with a loud thud.

I grabbed the trust document and walked out of the sunroom.

Downstairs, the printer in Daniel's home office whirred to life. Grace had emailed the file just as promised. I collected the warm pages from the output tray and carried them into the dining room.

I sat at the mahogany table, right where the empty strawberry cake bowl had been this morning. I smoothed out the final page.

Marriage Dissolution Agreement.

I uncapped my pen.

"Mrs. Whitmore?" a quiet voice called out from the hallway.

I looked up. Helen Ross, our housekeeper for the past ten years, stood in the doorway. She held a silver tray bearing a tall glass of water.

"You are home early," Helen said, stepping into the dining room. "Mr. Whitmore texted me to leave the outdoor lights on for them. He said they would be out very late."

"They are busy celebrating," I said. "You do not need to wait up for them, Helen."

Helen approached the table. She set the silver tray down near my elbow. "You forgot your evening pill again. I brought you some warm water."

"Thank you."

I pressed the pen tip against the paper. I signed Clara Whitmore on the left dotted line. I left the space next to Daniel's name blank.

Helen reached for the empty glass bowl left over from breakfast. Her eyes darted downward, catching the bold black letters at the top of the legal document.

Her hand jerked. The glass of water tipped over.

A pool of liquid rushed across the mahogany wood, soaking the edges of the divorce papers.

"Oh my goodness," Helen gasped. She dropped the bowl and frantically grabbed a cloth napkin from her apron pocket. "I am so sorry, ma'am. Let me dry that."

"Leave it, Helen," I instructed, pulling the signed page out of the puddle. "It is just water. The signature is perfectly intact."

Helen kept dabbing at the table, her breathing uneven. "You are really doing it? You are actually leaving?"

"I am."

"But what about Noah?" she asked, her voice cracking. "He is just a boy. He does not understand what is happening in this house."

"Noah made his choice tonight," I said, my tone flat. "He prefers Maya's cake to my company. He prefers her attention to my health."

Helen stopped wiping the table. She clutched the damp napkin against her chest and stared at me.

"Mr. Whitmore is blind," Helen whispered, her eyes filling with unshed tears. "He let that woman bring her easels into your sunroom. He let her change the grocery orders last month. I tried to stop the movers from bringing in her art supplies, but Mr. Whitmore told me to stand down and respect her creative space."

"It does not matter anymore." I folded the damp divorce papers and slid them into my leather tote bag. "I will pack my bags tonight. I am leaving in the morning."

"Where will you go?"

"A hotel. Then I will find an apartment."

"You should fight for this house," Helen urged, stepping closer. "You built this family."

"There is no family left to fight for," I replied. "Maya can have the piano space. She can have the dining table. I am done."

Helen looked toward the hallway, checking for shadows even though we were alone. She leaned closer to the table.

"You cannot leave empty-handed, Mrs. Whitmore," Helen said. "Not after everything you sacrificed for that boy."

"I have my trust fund for him," I said, tapping the manila envelope. "That is enough."

"No, it is not."

Helen reached into the deep pocket of her gray uniform dress. She pulled out a small, scratched silver object.

She placed the old USB drive right next to my hand on the wet mahogany surface.

"Ma'am, you should take the record of Noah's birthday gifts too," Helen whispered.
