AFTER ALL I WENT THROUGH, HE STILL LOVED HER Chapter 1

Tonight made me realize that I wasn't a wife to him. I was a placeholder.

I stood frozen in my emerald silk dress, champagne flute trembling in my hand as William 's words cut through the ambient chatter of the gala.

"You should have seen Selena's proposal for the Morgan account," he announced to our circle of colleagues, his hand resting far too comfortably on her shoulder. "Absolutely brilliant strategy. Sometimes I wonder why I didn't meet her sooner."

The crystal chandelier's light caught Selena's diamond earrings as she tilted her head, false modesty painted across her features.

"Oh William , you're too kind. Though I must say, having a mentor who actually understands complex business analytics makes all the difference."

The implication hung heavy in the air. Three years of marriage, and here I was, being dismissed as intellectually inferior by my own husband in front of half of Silicon Valley's elite.

"Speaking of the Morgan account," Selena continued, swirling her champagne with practiced elegance, "Charlotte , didn't you try pitching them last year? Such a shame it didn't work out." Her smile didn't reach her eyes. "But then again, not everyone has the same... aptitude for these things."

The truth crashed over me like ice water I had to leave

"If you'll excuse me," I managed to whisper, but no one seemed to notice as I slipped away from the group, their laughter echoing behind me like a funeral dirge for my marriage.

I made my way to the ladies' room, my heels clicking against the marble floor in a rhythm that matched my racing heart.

Alone with my reflection, my hands gripped the cold marble countertop as the numbers and letters from last year's Morgan proposal swam before my eyes.

My stomach clenched as I looked at the mirror and watched myself pale beneath my carefully applied makeup.

The same way they always did – taunting me, rearranging themselves like a cruel dance.

William had known about my dyslexia when he married me. "It makes you unique, darling," he'd said back then.

Now I wondered if he'd seen it as just another flaw he could use to mold me into his idea of a perfect, dependent wife.

I fumbled with my clutch, pulling out the speech notes I'd prepared for tonight just in case I was told to do that.

The words blurred and jumbled before me, just like they had during that devastating Morgan pitch.

When I felt much better, I let myself out of the restroom and a movement in my peripheral vision caught my attention through the hallway.

A man in an impeccably tailored charcoal suit stood near the bar, his dark eyes fixed on me with an intensity that made my skin prickle.

There was something about the sharp angle of his jaw, the way he held himself – like a memory trying to surface through murky water.

I'd seen him before, somewhere, but the recognition slipped away like sand through my fingers.

He raised his glass slightly, a gesture so subtle it could have been my imagination. My throat tightened as our eyes met again.

The sound of William 's voice over the microphone shattered the moment. "Could everyone gather around for the ceremonial speech?"

Taking my mind off the stranger, I pressed my trembling fingers to my temples, trying to gather the strength that I'll need to stand beside whoever was going to make the speech.

I had barely stepped back into the stage when Selena intercepted me, thrusting a piece of paper into my hands.

"William had an urgent call. He wants you to deliver his speech." Her red lips curved into a predatory smile. "You can read, can't you?"

My stomach dropped. "I—I can't. Where's William ?"

"Already gone. Don't embarrass him more than you already have."

I tried to refuse, but then I saw it—that penetrating stare from the mysterious man in the crowd.

Something in his gaze made me straighten my spine and take the paper with trembling fingers.

The moment I faced the crowd, the different letters I held began their familiar dance.

"G-good evening, every—" I squinted at the paper, my heart thundering. The words twisted and merged, mocking me. "Our c-company's growth this q-quarter..."

Scattered whispers rippled through the audience. Someone snickered. The paper shook violently in my hands as sweat beaded on my forehead.

"Oh, for heaven's sake," Selena stepped forward, snatching the paper. "Let me handle this before you make an even bigger fool of yourself."

I fled the stage, tears burning my eyes. The exit sign was a blissful blur of red as I burst through the doors into the cool night air.

"History has an ugly way of repeating itself, Mrs. Wright."

I spun around. The mysterious man stood there, his face half-shadowed.

"Who are you?"

"Someone who knows who the real you is." He stepped closer, his voice low. "Be careful with your husband, he is not who you think he is”.

Before I could respond, he melted into the darkness, leaving me with nothing but questions and the bitter taste of humiliation on my tongue.
