Rejected While My Mate Saved Another Woman's Life Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday night, in front of everyone I'd ever known.

I was halfway across the gathering hall when Dillon turned to face me. The torchlight caught the hard line of his jaw. Behind him, the entire Ironridge Pack stood in silence—rows of wolves who'd watched me endure three years of this, who'd looked away every time Hayley touched his arm at pack dinners, who'd never once asked why their Alpha refused to mark his mate.

Tonight they weren't looking away.

"I, Dillon, Alpha of Ironridge," he said, his voice carrying that particular quality of finality I'd learned to recognize, "reject you, Scarlett, as my mate."

The mate mark on my neck went ice-cold.

Not painful. Not yet. Just—cold. Like someone had pressed a block of frozen metal against my skin. I reached up without thinking, fingers finding the spot where his mark had burned warm for three years, and felt nothing. Empty. A door closing in an abandoned house.

Then the severance hit.

Pain detonated through every nerve at once. My knees buckled. The stone floor came up fast and I barely got my hands out in time. The impact jarred through my wrists but I couldn't feel it past the agony tearing through my chest, my spine, my skull. It felt like someone had reached inside me and ripped out something vital, something I needed to breathe.

I heard myself make a sound. Not a scream. Smaller than that. A broken gasp that didn't have enough air behind it.

No one moved.

I looked up through the haze of pain. Dillon's face was blank. Not angry. Not sorry. Just—blank. The way you'd look at a task you'd finished, an item checked off a list.

"Mom," I whispered.

Through the collapsing remnants of the bond—the last threads still connecting us before they snapped completely—I felt it. The healing chamber. Emily's heartbeat stuttering. The ritual interrupted. Marcus's hands gone.

No.

"Beta Alonzo," Dillon said, already turning away from me. "Pull Healer Marcus from the healing chamber immediately. He's needed at the Silverfang border. Hayley's been injured in a rogue attack."

Alonzo moved without hesitation. His footsteps echoed across the silent hall, steady and unhurried, heading toward the corridor that led to the healing wing.

"No," I said again, louder this time. I tried to stand. My legs wouldn't hold me. "She's in the middle of the ritual—you can't—"

Dillon didn't look back.

I felt Emily's heartbeat through the bond. Felt it stutter again. Felt the healer's presence vanish from the room, the ritual markings half-complete, the instruments abandoned. Felt my mother's confusion, her fear, her body trying to hold on while the wolf-heart that had been failing for months finally gave out without the healer's support.

I screamed her name. The sound tore out of my throat raw and animal. I got one hand under me, tried to push up, tried to reach the healing chamber even though I knew it was too late, knew I could feel it happening through the bond that was killing me as it died—

Emily's heartbeat stopped.

The bond snapped.

I felt the exact moment she left. Felt the space where she'd been my entire life go silent and empty and wrong. The severed bond flooded me with a wave of agony so complete I couldn't breathe past it, couldn't see past it, couldn't do anything but collapse forward onto the cold stone floor while my mother died alone on a healer's table because my mate—my fated mate, chosen by the Moon Goddess herself—had ordered the healer to leave her mid-ritual so he could fly to another woman's side.

The last thing I heard before the darkness took me was Dillon's voice, already distant, giving orders about the Silverfang border.

The last thing I felt was the mate mark on my neck—no longer cold, no longer anything. Just an empty patch of skin where something sacred used to live.

And underneath it all, buried so deep I almost didn't recognize it, something small and hot that refused to go out. Something that felt less like grief and more like a promise.

They were all watching when I fell.

Not one of them moved to catch me.
