Chapter 3

I slid the heavy drawer shut, clicked the desk lamp off, and slipped into the corridor.

A shadow peeled away from the wall.

"Going somewhere, Vivienne?"

Damian stood under the dim sconce light, blocking the passage to the courtyard. A thick manila folder rested in his right hand. His tie was loosened, the top button of his dress shirt undone, but his posture was rigid stone.

"Step aside, Damian," I said, keeping my distance.

"Not until you sign this."

He tossed the folder onto a marble console table between us. The pages slid forward, revealing dense legal clauses under a bold header: *Premarital Settlement and Asset Partition Agreement.*

I glanced down at the top sheet.

"What is this nonsense?"

"A clean slate," Damian replied, stepping closer until the scent of his cologne filled the narrow space. "You give up all residual claims to the Sterling family estate. You surrender every master track, every pending royalty, and any future commercial income from your compositions. In return, I let the wedding proceed next month."

I stared at the black ink, then lifted my chin to meet his gaze.

"You want me to sign away my entire life's work."

"Your work belongs to this family," he said without blinking. "You walked away from New York. Clara spent three years keeping your father's business steady while you vanished to play starving artist in Europe. This document balances the books."

"Clara didn't build anything," I said flatly. "She stole my portfolio with Adrian's help."

"Enough of your pathetic lies!" Damian snapped, his voice echoing down the corridor. "Nobody stole anything from you! You left! You disgraced us, and now you want to strut back in here like an heiress?"

"I don't want a single penny of your money, Damian."

"Then sign the damn papers!"

"No."

Damian let out a short, incredulous breath. He ran a hand through his hair, his composure splintering.

"Do you really think you have leverage right now?" he asked, pointing a finger at my chest. "Look at what just happened downstairs. In ten minutes, the press will run Clara's statement. Evan backed her. Your father will cut off your trust by midnight. You will have nothing, Vivienne. No name, no money, no connections."

"I survived three years without you," I said. "I can survive the rest of my life."

"You survived on scraps!" Damian snarled. He planted both palms on the console table, leaning toward me. "Be smart for once in your life. Marry me. You sign this prenup, you walk down the aisle on my arm, and I bring you back inside the circle. You get your social status back. You get protection. People will respect you again because you'll belong to me."

"Belong to you?"

The words tasted like poison. I tilted my head, studying the sharp, entitled angle of his jaw.

"You don't want a wife, Damian. You want an obedient dog on a leash."

"I am offering you salvation!"

A laugh tore from my throat—bright, cold, and utterly humorless.

"Keep your salvation," I said. "I'd rather starve in the gutter than spend ten seconds in your bed."

Damian's eyes flared with sudden fury.

Before I could dodge, his fingers clamped around my right wrist like a steel vice. He yanked hard, dragging me against his chest.

"Get your hands off me!" I shouted, ramming my free forearm against his collarbone to push him away.

"You're not walking away from this!" Damian growled, his grip tightening until my bones ground together. His face loomed inches above mine, his teeth bared. "You think you can humiliate me in front of the board? You think you can laugh in my face after everything I did to protect you?"

"You never protected me!" I fought back, twisting my arm, my nails digging into the sleeve of his jacket. "Release me right now, Damian!"

"You're throwing another tantrum," he sneered, ignoring my struggles. He wrenched my arm behind my back, pinning me against the wall. The cold plaster bit through the silk of my dress. "You were going to be my wife. You don't get to walk away whenever you want."

"Touch her again, and you won't have hands left to sign anything."

The voice sounded from the far end of the hallway.

It was quiet. Low. Perfectly smooth. Yet it carried a lethal weight that made the temperature in the corridor drop instantly.

Damian froze.

Footsteps approached, measured and completely calm.

A tall figure stepped out of the shadows into the warm amber sconce light. Tailored charcoal suit, custom Italian leather shoes, silver cuff links catching the glint of the chandelier behind him. His broad shoulders cut an imposing silhouette against the arched hallway.

Lucien.

Damian didn't release me immediately. He glared over his shoulder, his chest heaving with irritation.

"Who the hell are you?" Damian barked. "This is private family business. Get out before I have security throw you onto the street."

Lucien didn't raise his voice. He didn't rush. He simply stopped two paces away, his striking gray eyes fixed on Damian’s hand clamped around my wrist.

"She said no," Lucien stated.

The three words hung in the air, heavy and sharp.

Damian scoffed, though his grip loosened just a fraction. "You're that European nobody Vivienne dragged here from Paris, aren't you? Listen to me, buddy. You don't know who you're talking to. I run Vance Capital. This girl belongs to my family, and if you take one more step—"

Lucien stepped forward.

He didn't swing a punch. He didn't shout. He placed his left hand on Damian's wrist, his fingers pressing into a nerve cluster with effortless precision.

Damian gasped, a strangled sound escaping his throat as his fingers snapped open involuntarily. Pain rippled across his face, forcing him two steps backward.

Lucien smoothly caught my waist with his right arm, pulling me behind his back in one fluid sweep. His broad frame completely shielded me from Damian's sight.

"Are you hurt, Vivienne?" Lucien asked softly, glancing down at me.

"I'm fine," I murmured, rubbing my bruised skin.

Across from us, Damian clutched his numb wrist, his breath ragged. He glared at Lucien, his face burning red with humiliation.

"You just assaulted an American CEO," Damian hissed, pulling out his phone. "I will have you deported by tomorrow morning. What's your name, you arrogant piece of—"

Damian stopped.

His eyes locked onto the signet ring on Lucien's right hand—a platinum crest bearing a silver hawk perched over a crossed saber.

Damian’s jaw dropped. The color completely drained from his cheeks, leaving him ashen under the yellow lights.

"The Laurent crest..." Damian stammered, lowering the phone as his fingers began to shake. "You... you're Lucien Laurent?"

Lucien didn't answer. He adjusted the lapel of his coat, his expression impassive.

"The Chairman of Laurent Entertainment?" Damian’s voice broke into an octave of sheer panic. "The conglomerate that bought out the European distribution rights for our entire media branch last month?"

"The very same," Lucien said evenly. "And if you ever lay a finger on Vivienne again, I will liquidate your firm before the market opens on Monday."

Damian stood frozen, unable to form a coherent sentence. His arrogant bravado shattered into dust. He looked from Lucien to me, his gaze wild with shock, betrayal, and confusion.

"Vivienne..." Damian choked out, pointing a trembling hand at me. "What is this? How do you know Lucien Laurent?"

I looked up at Lucien.

His tall, commanding presence stood between me and the nightmare I had lived in for three years. He didn't demand an explanation. He didn't pressure me to speak. He simply stood there, a fortress waiting for my command.

I didn't answer Damian's question.

Not yet.

The secret I had carried across the ocean was far larger than a business connection—and the Sterling family was about to pay for every single drop of blood they took from me.

Before Damian could speak another word, the sharp chime of an elevator bell echoed from the end of the hall, followed by the sound of approaching voices.

Richard and Adrian were coming.
