The Daughter They Abandoned Came Back as a Billionaire's Wife Chapter 1

The automatic sliding doors hissed open, spitting me out into the chill of the New York terminal.

Three years.

Thirty-six months since I packed a single duffel bag and fled across the Atlantic with blood beneath my fingernails and panic rattling in my chest. Now, I was back.

Grandfather Arthur was turning seventy-five. For him, and only him, I returned.

I didn't expect a welcome committee. Certainly not this one.

Standing near the passenger pick-up barrier were three men I once believed would throw themselves in front of a speeding train for me.

My older brother, Adrian Sterling.

My former best friend, Evan.

And Damian, the man who had slid a diamond onto my finger four years ago and promised to protect me from the world.

Damian reached me first. He didn't offer a hug. He didn't take my suitcase. His hand clamped down on my forearm like an iron cuff, jerking me to an abrupt halt.

"Why are you here, Vivienne?"

His tone carried no warmth. Just sharp, bristling hostility.

"Let go of my arm, Damian," I said evenly.

"Answer me," he demanded, his grip tightening. "Who told you to come back without warning? Did you think you could just sneak into the city?"

I yanked my arm back. He let go, but his jaw remained locked in fury.

"My grandfather is celebrating his seventy-fifth birthday," I replied. "I don't need a visitor's pass to attend a Sterling family event."

Adrian stepped forward, his leather jacket unzipped, arms crossed over his broad chest. His expression held the exact same condescending disgust he had worn the night he threw me away.

"You're here to ruin it, aren't you?" Adrian barked. "You couldn't stand being forgotten. The moment you heard Clara was helping Grandfather organize the gala, you bought a ticket to come claw your way back into the spotlight."

"Adrian," Evan cut in quietly, though there was zero comfort in his posture. He stood half a step behind them, shifting his weight. "Keep your voice down. People are staring."

Evan looked at me then. For half a second, his eyes flickered with something like shame, but it vanished beneath a practiced shield of righteousness.

"Vivienne," Evan said, his voice dropping into that gentle, patronizing tone he used whenever he wanted to smooth over an atrocity. "You shouldn't have shown up like this. Clara has spent weeks having panic attacks just hearing your name mentioned. She finally found peace. Why reopen old wounds?"

A laugh caught in my throat. I couldn't help it. It escaped as a dry, quiet chuckle.

"Peace?" I tilted my head. "Is that what you call it?"

"Don't start," Damian warned, closing the distance between us again. "I'm warning you right now, Vivienne. Clara has suffered enough because of you. If you lay a single finger on her, or say one vicious word to make her cry, you will answer to me."

"Suffered?" I echoed.

The airport noise faded, replaced by the memory of shattered crystal and the dark splash of red wine.

Three years ago, at the midsummer charity gala, Clara had stood before me on the marble balcony. She had smiled, raised her glass, and dumped expensive Merlot down the front of her white designer gown. Then she flung herself backward onto the flagstones, sobbing hysterically, screaming that I wanted her dead.

My father, Richard, hadn't asked questions.

My mother, Victoria, had slapped me before I could draw breath.

Adrian had called me a venomous, jealous bitch who couldn't stand having an adopted sister.

And Damian had grabbed my wrists, shaking me, barking orders for me to beg Clara for forgiveness.

When I refused, they turned to Evan. Evan, who had walked onto the balcony seconds before the glass shattered.

*Tell them, Evan,* I had pleaded back then, my voice cracking. *You saw her do it. Tell them she poured it on herself.*

Evan had looked down at Clara's tear-streaked face, then looked at me, and said: *Vivienne shoved her. I saw it with my own eyes.*

That lie sealed the door.

Literally.

"You really believe your own fiction, don't you, Damian?" I said, staring directly into his dark eyes.

"It wasn't fiction," Damian snapped. "You pushed her. You humiliated her in front of high society. And when your parents demanded an apology, you threw a tantrum like an entitled child."

"So you locked me in the cellar storage room," I whispered.

The air grew heavy between us.

"You knew," I continued, glancing from Damian to Adrian, then fixing on Evan. "All three of you knew I couldn't breathe in small, dark spaces. You knew what happened to me when I was seven. You knew the dark closet gave me convulsions."

Evan flinched, casting his gaze toward the polished linoleum floor.

Adrian didn't blink. "You needed to learn humility, Vivienne. You stayed in that room for twelve hours. It didn't kill you. It was supposed to teach you that actions have consequences."

"I screamed until my vocal cords bled," I said, my voice dead and flat. "I banged on that metal door until three of my nails tore off completely. And not one of you came."

"Because you were supposed to apologize!" Damian snarled, his patience snapping. "Even after twelve hours, when your father opened that door, you sat on the floor, glaring at Clara like you wanted to murder her! You never apologized. Not once!"

"I don't apologize for crimes I didn't commit."

"You're doing it again," Adrian sneered. "Still arrogant. Still stubborn. You haven't changed one bit in three years, have you?"

"No," Damian said, stepping directly into my personal space, towering over me. His breath hit my forehead, cold and sharp. "She's going to change today. Listen to me, Vivienne. You're going to come with us to the manor right now. You are going to walk up to Clara, bow your head, and offer a full, sincere apology for what you did before you left."

I raised an eyebrow behind my dark sunglasses. "And if I don't?"

"If you don't," Damian said, every syllable dripping with icy finality, "I am calling the press tonight. I will publicly terminate our engagement. You will be stripped of the Sterling social standing, and I will ensure not a single respectable door in Manhattan ever opens for you again."

He waited.

They all waited.

They expected the old Vivienne. The girl who desperately clung to Damian's sleeve, who begged her brother for an ounce of approval, who treated Evan's friendship like gold. They expected me to tremble, to beg, to cave under the threat of losing my fiancé.

I slowly reached up, took off my sunglasses, and tucked them into the collar of my trench coat.

My eyes met Damian's. Clear. Dry. Untouched.

"You should cancel it," I said.

Damian froze. His eyes narrowed, confusion cracking through his arrogant mask. "What did you say?"

"I said, cancel it," I repeated, each word crisp and bright. "Call the papers. Call the television crews. Announce to the whole world that Damian Vance is breaking his engagement with Vivienne Sterling. Please. Do it before noon so I don't have to waste time doing it myself."

"Vivienne, have you lost your mind?" Evan stepped forward, his brow furrowed in disbelief. "Do you know what you're throwing away?"

"Trash," I said simply. "I'm throwing away trash."

"You ungrateful little—" Adrian raised a hand, stepping toward me.

Before he could bridge the gap, the sharp chime of my phone cut through the tension.

I pulled it from my bag. The screen displayed a caller ID that made every knot in my stomach loosen: *Lucien*.

I tapped the green button and lifted the phone to my ear.

"Vivienne?" Lucien's deep, steady voice came through the speaker, rich with an unmistakable accent.

Before I could answer, a tiny, breathless voice chimed in from the background, bubbling with sheer joy.

"Mommy! Mommy, we see the big glass doors! Papa says we're right outside terminal four in the black car! Hurry, Mommy, I bought you a flower!"

Hearing Sophie's voice, the coldness in my chest shattered into pure sunlight. A genuine, radiant smile broke across my face—a smile none of the three men in front of me had seen in half a decade.

"I see the doors, baby," I answered softly into the mic. "Mommy is walking out right now."

I lowered the phone and tapped the screen dark.

Damian stared at me, his face pale, his fists trembling at his sides. "Who was that? Who were you talking to?"

"None of your business, Damian," I said.

I gripped the handle of my suitcase, turned on my boot heel, and took a stride toward the sliding doors.

"Vivienne! Stop right there!" Adrian yelled after me. "If you walk away, don't you dare think about coming to Grandfather's party!"

I paused, glancing back over my shoulder just once.

"My real family is waiting for me," I said. "See you at the gala, boys."

I walked through the exit without looking back, stepping into the crisp afternoon breeze where a sleek black town car waited at the curb.

Across the terminal pick-up lane, hidden behind the tinted windows of a silver sedan, Clara lowered her phone from her ear. Her manicured fingers tapped against the steering wheel, her lips curling into a vicious, silent sneer as she watched me approach the black car.

"So, you really brought a secret home with you, Vivienne," Clara murmured to the empty vehicle, pressing send on a text. "Let's see if Grandfather survives finding out what kind of whore his granddaughter turned into."
