Chapter 1

Our seven-year marriage was a castle built on sand.

For seven years, my husband, Grant, and I had built a seemingly unbreakable haven around our lovely son, Asher.

But when Scarlett—Grant’s unforgettable college “first love”—appeared at our doorstep with her son, Cody, that castle crumbled into dust.

At Cody's birthday barbecue, she and her son goaded Asher into eating a peanut butter cookie. My son, who was severely allergic to peanuts.

I tried to stop them, but the real betrayal came from my husband. Not only did he fail to protect our child, but to please his mistress, he pressured Asher into eating the deadly cookie that took his life.

Before I could recover from the trauma of watching my son die, my husband destroyed the memorial garden I had built for Asher right before my eyes—the only tangible monument to my son in this world.

In that moment, whatever love I had for him died. I wouldn't just leave him. I would make him pay for everything.

The afternoon sun was a brutal, blinding glare. I watched my six-year-old son, Asher, recoil from a tray laden with peanut butter cookies. Though it was the height of summer, his face was pale, and cold sweat slicked his bangs to his forehead.

Ever since he was diagnosed with a severe peanut allergy, the mere sight of that deadly temptation made my own heart pound.

"Grant, please," I said, hurrying over to my husband, who was throwing his head back in laughter beside a woman I knew all too well—Scarlett. Scarlett was the mother of Cody, the birthday boy, and the source of the constant, icy knot in my stomach.

"Can you stop them? Asher can't have peanuts. You know it could kill him."

The lavish birthday barbecue was for Scarlett's son, Cody, held in the backyard of our Hamptons vacation house. Grant had insisted on hosting it here. His reason? He didn't want Cody to feel second-best to anyone, especially not our son, Asher.

Grant shot me a dismissive glance, the smile on his lips stiffening for a second before hardening into cold indifference. He lowered his voice, barely concealing the impatience in his tone. "Don't kill the mood, Avalon. I already told you, they just smell like peanuts. They're harmless. It's Cody's birthday, and I don't want Asher treated like some kind of freak."

"But he doesn't look right. He's trembling," I protested.

As Cody shoved the cookie toward him, Asher’s grip on my hand tightened. "Mommy, no. My throat feels itchy, and I don't like the smell."

"Forget it, Grant. Just tell them not to force him," I pleaded, trying to keep my voice steady. Scarlett was watching us with a smug look, clearly savoring the drama.

Grant just waved a dismissive hand. "It's fine, Avalon. Relax. Your overprotectiveness has spoiled him rotten. Go on, Asher, try your friend's cookie. Be a man, fit in a little."

He offered a smile that was meant to be fatherly but dripped with condescension. The look alone felt like a slap in the face.

My sweet, poor boy. Asher, still looking terrified, refused to open his mouth. Grant's eyes darkened instantly. In a cold, unquestionable voice, he commanded, "Eat it, Asher. Or you won't touch your Switch for the rest of the month."

"Grant!" I yelled. "Are you insane? You're threatening our child!"

"Let me handle my son my way, Avalon," he retorted sharply, turning to glare at Asher with cold, imperious eyes. "Did you hear me, Asher? Don't embarrass me."

My poor boy. He looked at me, his eyes brimming with tears, a desperate plea that shattered my heart. To please his father, he took a peanut-butter-slathered cookie with a trembling hand. Before I could lunge forward and slap it from his hand, he’d already taken a bite. Almost instantly, his eyes widened in fear, then contorted in pain.

A wave of icy dread washed over me. I scooped Asher up, rushed to a quiet corner, and pulled the EpiPen from my purse. I lifted his clothes and jabbed the needle firmly into his thigh.

"Grant! Look!" I stormed back, shoving the spent EpiPen in his face. "We have to go to the emergency room, now!"

But his attention was already back on Scarlett. She was whispering in his ear, and the low, rumbling chuckle he gave in response sent a chill down my spine.

"Just a minute, Avalon. Scarlett is discussing Cody's private school applications." He held up a hand in that familiar, dismissive gesture that always made me feel insignificant.

"Grant, his throat is swelling shut! He's choking," I gasped, my voice trembling with panic.

He finally shot me a look, his expression laced with annoyance, not an ounce of concern. "I told you, it's fine! Just give him some water. You're always overreacting, Avalon. It's embarrassing."

But before I could argue, Asher staggered, his small body convulsing violently. He tried to speak, but only a horrifying gurgle escaped his lips before he collapsed onto the grass, his face turning a terrifying shade of blue.

A heart-wrenching scream tore from my throat. "Asher! Oh my God, Grant! We have to go to the hospital! Now!"
