Chapter 2

Seeing his son convulsing on the ground, Grant finally seemed to grasp the gravity of the situation. His face went white as he scrambled to his feet, fumbling in his pocket for his car keys.

"Okay, okay. Pick him up. I'll get the car," he said, turning and bolting toward the garage.

Fear, so potent it left me dizzy, washed over me. I knelt on the grass, holding my limp son and whispering his name.

But just as Grant reached the back door, a sharp, theatrical cry cut through the air.

"Daddy! It hurts! My arm!"

Cody, Scarlett's son, had jumped from the swing and was now clutching his arm, writhing on the ground in a theatrical performance of agony. He was faking, wailing hysterically, but his eyes darted toward Grant, demanding attention.

Grant froze. His gaze flickered between his unconscious son and his mistress's, who was now crying up a storm.

Scarlett shrieked in alarm. "Cody! Oh my God! Grant, look! I think his arm is broken! He has a gift for the piano, what if this ruins his whole life?!" she cried, her voice escalating with hysteria.

Grant looked at me, at the faintly breathing Asher in my arms, then back at the playacting child. He made his choice in a brutal, heart-stopping instant.

"I have to go," he said, his voice flat and devoid of emotion.

Shock paralyzed me. "What? No, Grant," I said in disbelief, holding my fading son. "Asher is unconscious! He needs the ER now! You can't leave!"

"I'm sorry, Avalon. But Cody might have a fracture. That could affect his whole life. He's just a child. I have to get him to the emergency room."

"And what about Asher? Isn't he a child? Isn't he your child?" I shrieked, tears blurring my vision.

A flicker of hesitation crossed his eyes, but it vanished as quickly as it came. "It's just an allergy, Avalon. Give him some water. The paramedics will be here soon. Just wait for them. He'll be fine."

And just like that, he turned, scooped up the perfectly fine Cody, wrapped an arm around Scarlett, and rushed out the door. A moment later, the roar of a car engine filled the air.

The black SUV sped down the driveway, leaving me kneeling on the grass, clutching my dying son, watching his father abandon us for another woman and her child.

In that moment, something inside me broke.

"Asher," I begged through my tears, "please, hang on. Mommy will save you." My hands were trembling, my words hollow and powerless.

Like a madwoman, I grabbed my phone and dialed 911 again, pleading with them to hurry. The few minutes I waited felt like an eternity.

When the ambulance finally arrived and rushed Asher to Mount Sinai Hospital, I clung to his hand, whispering desperate prayers the whole way.

The 'In Use' light above the emergency room door glowed red. Then, it went dark. The doctor emerged, pulling down his mask, his eyes full of a sympathy I couldn't bear.

"Mrs. Croft, we're so sorry. The delay was too long. The allergic reaction led to cardiac arrest... We did everything we could."

"No," I cut him off. My legs gave out, and I crumpled to the cold hospital floor. I wasn't ready to face this cruel reality. Asher, my son, had smiled at me this morning. He couldn't just leave me.

"Doctor, do something. Please!" I begged, grasping at straws.

But no one could bring Asher back. No one would ever call me Mommy again.

I sat with Asher all night, long after my tears ran dry, my heart a hollowed-out cavern where only vengeance could grow.

I went inside. Asher lay on the bed, his small body covered by a white sheet. I lifted the cloth and looked at his sleeping face. For a moment, I thought it was for the best.

He would no longer have to live so cautiously, just to please Grant. He would no longer have to watch Grant lavish all his fatherly affection on Cody.

"Cody's healthy and strong. Not like you, always sick, always causing trouble."

"Cody compliments every restaurant I take him to. You just ruin the fun, unable to eat this or that."

"I can't deal with your special food when we travel. You're staying home. I'm taking Cody."

My heart had bled every time I watched my son shed silent tears after being shamed by his own father.

But not anymore. Asher was gone. Forever. No one could hurt him now.

"You will regret this, Grant," I whispered, kissing Asher's cold forehead one last time, whispering a vow.

"He'll never be your burden again. And you will pay with everything you have."
