Chapter 2

The glass and steel skyscraper of Cavill Enterprises pierced the city skyline like a blade, standing as a reflection of the man who controlled everything from its highest floor.

Inside the sleek, minimalist office, Damian Cavill stood before the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking down at the city beneath him.

Hours ago, he had been in Valerie’s bedroom.

Now, he looked like a completely different man.

Clad in a perfectly tailored charcoal suit, every detail about him appeared calculated—the crisp lines of his jacket, the expensive watch around his wrist, the calm expression that revealed nothing.

Damian Cavill did not simply enter a room.

He controlled it.

A quiet knock interrupted the silence.

“Come in.”

Marcus, his secretary and the closest thing Damian had to a confidant, stepped inside with a tablet in hand.

“The board members are waiting in the conference room, sir,” Marcus said. “But there are a few matters that require your attention first.”

He glanced down at the screen.

“The medical appointment has been moved to four. The legal team has also finalized the estate arrangements.”

Marcus hesitated—a hesitation so brief most people would have missed it. Damian didn’t.

“Something else?” Damian asked.

Marcus looked up.

His gaze briefly dropped to Damian’s bare left hand before returning to his face.

“Sir… regarding the arrangement with Valerie.”

“Does she know?”

Damian’s expression did not change.

“Know what?”

“That the marriage is connected to the inheritance condition.”

A pause.

The city stretched endlessly beyond the glass.

“No.”

Damian’s answer was immediate.

“She doesn’t need to know.”

Marcus remained silent.

“She agreed to a contract,” Damian continued, adjusting his cuff. “That is all she needs to understand.”

There was something final about his tone.

A warning.

Marcus knew better than to push further.

He knew the pressure Damian carried. The expectations placed on him. The deadline approaching.

But Damian Cavill had survived worse things than pressure.

“Understood, Mr. Cavill.”

“The board?”

“Waiting.”

A faint, humorless smile touched Damian’s lips.

“Then let’s not keep them waiting.”

Marcus followed him out.

Because everyone in Cavill Enterprises knew one thing:

When Damian Cavill walked into a room, someone was usually about to lose.

Twenty high-ranking executives sat around the massive mahogany table, their conversations fading the moment Damian Cavill stepped inside.

He didn’t immediately take his seat at the head of the table.

Instead, he walked slowly around the room, his polished shoes clicking against the marble floor. Each step seemed deliberate, controlled.

No one spoke.

No one dared to.

“I’ve spent the morning reviewing the Q1 financial reports,” Damian said, his voice calm.

He stopped behind a senior director whose face had already begun to pale.

“And I found something interesting.”

Richard swallowed.

Damian placed a file on the table in front of him.

“Our confidential bidding strategy for the Northside technology project somehow found its way into the hands of our competitors.”

His eyes settled on Richard.

“Would you like to explain how?”

“M-Mr. Cavill…” Richard forced out, a bead of sweat forming at his temple. “I assure you, my department has been working day and night—”

The sound of the file hitting the table interrupted him.

“Day and night,” Damian repeated softly, “while transferring company funds into an offshore account registered under your wife’s maiden name?”

Richard froze.

“You, along with the heads of logistics and compliance, have been stealing from this company while attempting to gather enough support to challenge my authority at the next shareholder meeting.”

“Damian, you can’t just accuse us without—”

“You are fired.”

The executive stopped.

Damian calmly took his seat at the head of the table.

“All three of you.”

His fingers intertwined on the table.

“Security is already clearing your offices. By the time you reach the lobby, the fraud division will be waiting.”

His gaze moved across the room.

“If anyone else here believes they can betray this company and escape the consequences…”

He paused.

“Look carefully at the empty seats beside you.”

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Nobody dared to question him.

Within minutes, the people who had spent months plotting against Damian Cavill found themselves removed from the very empire they had tried to steal.

The meeting ended in a storm of hurried whispers.

Damian watched them leave without satisfaction or anger.

Only certainty.

Only when the room was empty did the mask slip for the briefest moment.

A faint tremor passed through his right hand.

He immediately closed his fist and hid it inside his pocket.

The pressure in his chest returned—a painful reminder of the condition he had spent years keeping hidden.

“Impressive.”

A mocking voice echoed from the doorway. Damian didn’t need to look up to know who it was.

“You never disappoint, nephew.”

Victor Cavill stepped into the room, his expensive suit carrying the confidence of a man who had never believed consequences applied to him.

His eyes moved over the empty chairs and the abandoned files on the table.

“Three senior executives removed in a single morning,” Victor said with a faint smile. “You have certainly inherited your father’s ruthlessness.”

Damian finally looked up.

“I’ll take that as a compliment.”

Victor’s smile faded slightly.

“You think fear is the same as respect.”

“No,” Damian replied calmly. “I think results are the difference.”

Victor walked farther into the room, resting a hand on the back of one of the empty chairs.

“You are becoming careless.”

The warning in his voice was deliberate.

“Or perhaps desperate.”

Damian’s expression remained unreadable.

“Careful, Uncle.”

Victor’s eyes narrowed.

“Your twenty-ninth birthday is approaching. Everyone knows what happens if you fail to meet your grandfather’s condition.”

For the briefest moment, something changed in Damian’s eyes.

Not fear.

Something colder.

“Be careful what you say.”

Victor gave a quiet laugh.

“Why? Because the truth hurts?”

He stepped closer.

“You built this empire by making everyone believe you were untouchable. But even you have a weakness.”

The silence between them stretched.

Damian slowly stood.

The difference in their height and presence was immediate.

Victor’s confidence faltered for only a second.

“Hard work?” Damian said quietly. “Is that what you call what you’ve been doing?”

Victor’s face tightened.

“You should be grateful I haven’t exposed your little games.”

“What games?”

Damian moved closer, his voice lowering.

“The payments from the shipping yards. The accounts hidden behind shell companies. The information passed to competitors.”

Victor’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But Damian saw it.

“I don’t make accusations, Uncle.”

He paused.

“I make preparations.”

Victor’s face drained of color. “You… you have no proof.”

“I have enough to ruin your entire legacy in an afternoon,” Damian hissed, leaning in. “The only reason you still have an office in this building is because I am protecting my mother from the fallout of a public family scandal. But cross me one more time, Uncle, and I will personally ensure you lose everything.”

Victor trembled with a mix of rage and absolute terror.

Damian turned his back on him, dismissing him entirely. “Leave.”

But before Victor could open his mouth to reply, the heavy double doors of the boardroom suddenly burst open.
