Chapter 3

The heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open, cutting through the suffocating tension like a sudden interruption to a storm.

A woman stepped inside.

Cecilia Vance.

She carried herself with the effortless elegance of someone who had spent her entire life being admired. Every detail about her appearance was carefully chosen—the designer dress that perfectly framed her figure, the flawless makeup, the confident smile that belonged on the cover of a magazine.

But Damian Cavill knew better than anyone that appearances could be deceiving.

Victor Cavill, still burning from the humiliation Damian had delivered moments earlier, clenched his fists.

He didn’t spare Cecilia a glance.

Without a word, he walked past her, his footsteps echoing through the empty boardroom before the door slammed shut behind him.

Cecilia didn’t even react.

Her attention was already fixed on Damian.

To Cecilia, the ruthless businessman everyone feared simply didn’t exist. She saw only the man she believed she understood better than anyone.

“Damian.”

Her voice softened as she walked toward him.

Not the voice of a business partner.

Not the voice of a childhood friend.

Something warmer.

Something she had convinced herself was love.

She lifted the insulated bag in her hand with a small smile.

“You look exhausted. I knew you would forget to eat again, so I personally had the chef prepare your favorite.”

Damian didn’t look at the food.

He simply adjusted the button of his suit jacket.

“My office. Now.”

The smile on Cecilia’s face remained perfectly in place.

But only for a second.

A brief flash of irritation crossed her eyes before she quickly buried it beneath the sweet expression she had mastered over the years.

She followed him.

Because Cecilia Vance had always believed patience would eventually be rewarded.

And she had been waiting for Damian Cavill for a very long time.

Inside his office, Damian settled behind his massive executive desk.

Cecilia placed the food container on the coffee table before taking the seat opposite him.

She studied him quietly.

The world saw Damian as untouchable.

Impossible to reach.

But Cecilia believed she knew the man beneath the reputation.

“You’ve heard the rumors this morning, haven’t you?” she asked, excitement flickering in her eyes.

Damian continued looking at his tablet.

“What rumors?”

A smile touched her lips.

“The ones about us.”

She leaned back, completely absorbed in the future she had already imagined.

“The media is obsessed with us. They’re calling it the perfect combination. Fashion and technology. Aura Luxe and Cavill Enterprises.”

Her eyes shone with certainty.

“Our companies complement each other. Our families have history. Everyone can see it, Damian.”

She paused.

“We would be unstoppable together.”

For a moment, Cecilia disappeared into the fantasy she had built.

A future where she stood beside him, and everyone accepted what she believed had always been obvious.

“People can say whatever they want.”

Damian’s voice cut through her imagination.

Her smile faded slightly.

He finally looked up.

“But you need to stop this, Cecilia.”

Her brows tightened.

“Stop what?”

“Following me to my office. Bringing me food. Creating stories about something that does not exist.”

His voice remained calm.

That almost made the words hurt more.

Cecilia’s fingers tightened around her purse.

“Damian, I’m only trying to care for you as a—”

“As a friend.”

He finished for her.

“And that is all we are.”

Silence filled the room.

“We are childhood friends. Business partners. I respect you.”

His grey eyes remained emotionless.

“But respect is not love.”

For a moment, the perfect smile disappeared.

Then it returned.

But Damian noticed.

“You always do this,” Cecilia whispered.

“Do what?”

“Push people away.”

She stepped closer.

“You think being cold makes you stronger. You think needing no one means no one can hurt you.”

Damian said nothing.

Because she was right about one thing.

He had built walls around himself.

But she was wrong if she thought she could tear them down.

“You saved me, Damian.”

Her voice softened.

“When everyone else walked away, you stayed.”

A faint tremor entered her words.

“You were the only person who saw me when I was at my lowest.”

Damian looked away.

Five years ago.

The hospital room.

The endless nights.

The girl who had almost lost herself.

“I understand why you feel indebted to me.” Damian said.

“What you feel is gratitude, Cecilia. Not love.”

The words struck deeper than Cecilia wanted to admit.

Her expression changed.

Only briefly.

Then the smile returned.

A beautiful smile.

A dangerous smile.

“Maybe you don’t see it yet.”

She moved closer to his desk.

“But one day, you will.”

Her eyes held an unwavering certainty.

“You will realize that I have always been the person standing beside you.”

Damian watched her carefully.

There was no anger in her voice.

No desperation.

Only complete belief.

And somehow, that was more unsettling.

“Damian, the world may see you as ruthless, but I know better. One day I’ll melt that icy heart of yours. Open your eyes. I am the only one who is meant for you… the only one who will ever truly love you.”

She forced a tight, chilling smile back onto her face. “I’ll see you later, Damian.”

The click of Cecilia’s stiletto heels finally faded down the corridor, leaving the office wrapped in a heavy, airless silence.

Damian leaned back in his chair.

The mask he wore so effortlessly began to crack.

He opened the drawer to retrieve a file, but his hand stopped when his fingers touched a small, tarnished silver charm.

A reminder of a time before everything became complicated.

Before Cecilia’s gratitude became something darker.

His mind returned to five years ago.

The hospital room.

The smell of antiseptic.

The dim fluorescent lights.

Cecilia curled into herself on the bed, her eyes empty, her spirit nearly broken.

Everyone else had stepped away.

But Damian stayed.

He remembered the countless hours.

Getting her to drink water.

Getting her to believe tomorrow was worth reaching.

Then came the day everything changed.

Cecilia had grabbed his sleeve tightly, her fingers trembling.

“You saved me, Damian.”

Her voice was barely a whisper.

“No one else matters.”

A pause.

“Only you.”

At the time, he thought it was gratitude.

He didn’t realize it would become an obsession.

After that day, she began memorizing his schedule.

Finding reasons to be near him and quietly watching every woman who approached him.

Every rejection was met with the same patient smile.

As if she believed time would eventually change his mind.

Damian closed the drawer.

The movement triggered the familiar pain beneath his ribs.

His jaw tightened.

Three years.

That was all the doctors had given him.

The clock was already moving.

Slowly, the pain faded.

Then something caught his attention.

A thin strand of dark silk clung to the sleeve of his sweater.

Valerie.

A silent reminder of the woman he had left behind only hours earlier.

He closed his eyes.

And saw her.

Those crystal-blue eyes staring at him as he walked away.

Not anger.

Not hatred.

Something quieter.

Something far more dangerous.

For a brief moment, his chest tightened.

Then the feeling disappeared behind the walls he had spent years building.

He opened his eyes and brushed the strand from his sleeve.

It meant nothing.

It had to mean nothing.
