Chapter 4

"I got the burp out of her," Cole said, transferring Sadie from his shoulder to the crook of his arm.

He stepped into the hallway, blocking my path to the laundry room. He wore a clean flannel shirt, his hair still damp from the shower. It was day one of the paternity test wait, and he had spent the entire morning turning his nervous energy into a relentless campaign for my attention.

"See?" Cole stepped closer, offering the sleeping infant like a trophy. "I am not the guy who ran two years ago. If that swab comes back proving she is mine, we could fix this. The three of us. We could make up for the time we lost."

I dropped the basket of dirty onesies onto the floorboards.

"Sadie is a human being, Cole," I told him, keeping my hands at my sides. "She is not a poker chip to buy back my affection. And she is certainly not a prop to prove you grew up."

His easy smile faltered. "Is this about Mason? Because he took the two A.M. shift? You suddenly think he is the better man?"

"I trust Mason to wake up when an alarm goes off," I replied, my voice dead level. "That is reliability. It is not romance. Stop translating my professional choices into some brotherly competition. You do not have the right to do that anymore."

Cole opened his mouth to argue, but Sadie shifted in his arms, letting out a soft whimper. He looked down, his frustration breaking just enough to gently rock her, and I walked past him to the laundry room.

At three o'clock, the county social worker spread her clipboard across the dining table for the second assessment.

"We need a concrete long-term care plan," the social worker said, tapping her pen against the paper. "Who is handling the primary daytime hours?"

Mason sat across from her, his posture rigid. "I scaled back the remote herding contracts. I will be here. Cole handles the feed runs before noon. We secured a certified nanny from the county backup list for emergencies."

I scanned the carbon copy of the care plan sitting near my elbow. My name was nowhere on the grid.

"What about Ms. Harper?" the social worker asked, glancing at me. "She has been instrumental so far."

"Ms. Harper is assisting voluntarily during the medical observation window," Mason said, his tone strictly business. "After that, she decides her own involvement. We are not factoring her into the mandatory coverage."

I stared at the blank space where my name could have easily been written. Mason had actually listened. He asked before arranging.

The front door clicked shut behind the social worker ten minutes later.

Cole immediately pushed his chair back, the wooden legs scraping loudly against the tile. "Great performance, Mason. You really nailed the respectful distance angle. Very noble."

Mason stood up, gathering the leftover forms. "It is called a boundary, Cole. You should try learning what the word means."

"You always know how to play the good guy for an audience," Cole shot back, stepping into Mason's space.

I grabbed the care plan and shoved it into a manila folder. "If you two want to tear each other apart, do it in the barn. I will not have this baby absorbing your hostility. Take it outside."

Neither man moved. Then Mason grabbed his jacket from the back of the chair and walked out the back door. Cole muttered something under his breath and headed for the stairs.

By eight that evening, the house settled into a tense quiet. Sadie lay against my chest in the rocking chair. She squirmed, her tiny fists grabbing the collar of my shirt.

"Ma-ma," she babbled, a string of wet, repetitive consonants.

The living room went silent. Cole stopped pacing by the fireplace. Mason froze with a fresh bottle halfway to the warmer.

Cole broke the quiet with a low laugh. "Listen to that. She already picked her mom."

"Shut up, Cole," Mason snapped, setting the bottle down hard on the counter. "Do not force titles on Harper just because she is holding her."

A sharp ache flared behind my ribs. I knew it was just babble, a random reflex of a developing vocal cord, but the sound echoed in the quiet room. I was functioning as a mother in this house. If I stayed, they would eventually use that function to anchor me here.

I stood up and crossed the rug, pressing Sadie into Mason's chest.

Mason adjusted his grip to support the infant's neck, looking at me with furrowed brows. "It is not time for her next feed yet."

"You two are finishing the night routine," I said, grabbing my purse from the sofa.

Cole stepped away from the fireplace. "Harper, wait. I was just joking."

"I am going home," I told them both.

I grabbed my keys from the console table and pushed through the screen door. The cool night air hit my face, doing nothing to clear the tightness in my chest.

The wooden planks creaked behind me. Mason stepped onto the porch, leaving the heavy oak door cracked open.

"Are you coming back tomorrow?" Mason asked, standing near the porch railing.

I turned around, gripping my key ring so hard the metal bit into my palm. "I am willing to watch Sadie. That does not mean I belong here. Do you understand the difference?"

"I understand," Mason said. He did not push for a promise. He just nodded once and met my gaze.

The shrill ring of the kitchen landline cut through the night air.

Through the cracked door, I watched Cole snatch the receiver off the wall. "Hale ranch," Cole said.

His easy posture vanished. The color drained from his face. He held the phone away from his ear, staring at the plastic as if it had burned him, then shoved it through the doorway toward Mason.

Mason grabbed the receiver, hitting the speaker button with his thumb.

A man's voice crackled through the cheap speaker, cold and sharp enough to echo off the porch beams.

"The baby you are taking care of is not yours, hand her over."
