A Baby at My Cowboy Ex's Ranch Gate Chapter 1

Two years ago, Cole Hale asked me to give up a Dallas pediatric fellowship because he swore he was done running.

I withdrew my application.

After one night in his bed, he left for the rodeo circuit before sunrise and stopped answering my calls.

I took the county night shift and learned not to build a future around a cowboy's promise.

Then I found Cole and his older brother Mason at the ranch gate, staring at a crying baby in a wicker carrier.

The note tucked under her blanket said, She belongs to one of you.

Cole laughed that I had always wanted to play house.

Mason made him shut up, followed every instruction I gave, and trusted me with the baby the second I said she was dehydrated.

By noon, I was the only person Sadie would take a bottle from.

When Mason asked me to stay the night, the baby wrapped her fist around my finger and the farmhouse felt dangerously warm.

Then I heard the brothers in the hall.

"Harper makes us look stable."

"If she leaves, child services has one more reason to take the baby."

"So keep her here."

"I will."

The call came ten minutes after I ended a twelve-hour shift.

"Harper, don't hang up."

Cole Hale's voice had not been in my ear for two years, and I still recognized the exact note he used when charm stopped working and panic took over.

I closed my locker at the county clinic. "You have thirty seconds."

"There's a baby at the ranch."

I froze with one arm inside my jacket. "What do you mean, at the ranch?"

"At the north cattle gate. In a carrier. Mason found her twenty minutes ago. The sheriff is here, and the hospital in town is backed up. She won't stop crying."

Whatever I felt about Cole had nothing to do with an infant left beside a county road.

"Keep her warm. Don't give her cow's milk, honey, or anything you found in the pantry. I'm coming."

The Hale ranch sat fifteen miles outside town, where the paved road gave way to gravel and winter-brown pasture. By the time I pulled through the iron gate, two sheriff's vehicles and a county sedan were parked in front of the house.

Mason Hale met me on the porch with a baby tucked against his chest.

I had known Mason mostly as Cole's older brother: quiet, broad-shouldered, impossible to read. Eighteen months after their father Raymond's death, the ranch seemed to have settled into his posture. He looked like a man who had spent too long holding up something heavy.

The baby looked nothing like a newborn. She was roughly eight months old, maybe a little older, with fine brown hair, two swollen gums, and furious gray-blue eyes. She wore a fleece sleeper beneath a clean wool blanket. Her cheeks were cold, but her lips were pink.

"How long was she outside?" I asked.

"Unknown," Mason said. "I found the carrier at six-ten. Deputy Miller checked the gate camera. It was dropped off at five-forty-two."

"Any vomiting? Trouble breathing? Loss of consciousness?"

"No. She cried when I picked her up and hasn't stopped for more than a minute."

Cole came out behind him, pale beneath his usual rodeo tan. "She hates me."

"That may be the first sensible opinion anyone in your family has had today," I said.

His mouth twitched, but I was already taking the baby from Mason.

She stiffened for one breath, then grabbed the collar of my scrubs with both fists.

"Hi, sweetheart." I slipped two fingers against the side of her neck, checking the pulse and skin temperature. "You have had a terrible morning, haven't you?"

The crying eased into ragged hiccups.

Cole stared. "You made that look insulting easy."

"I'm a pediatric nurse. You ride bulls. We all have our specialties."

Deputy Miller stepped out of the living room holding a clear evidence sleeve. Inside lay a single folded note.

"This was pinned under the carrier cushion," he said. "No name. No phone number."

Mason's face hardened. "Read it."

Miller opened the sleeve just enough to angle the paper toward us.

She belongs to one of you. Keep her safe.

For the first time since I arrived, Cole stopped moving.

"One of us?" he repeated.

Mason looked at his brother, then at the child in my arms. "You have anything you want to tell me?"

"Do you?"

"Not in front of her," I cut in. "And not before you know whether the note is even true."

The county caseworker, Ms. Gable, joined us on the porch. She had already contacted the on-call pediatrician and the child-welfare supervisor. Because the baby showed no sign of acute injury, the county would complete her medical exam at the clinic, photograph the carrier and clothing, run an emergency missing-child search, and collect cheek swabs from both brothers. Until the court reviewed placement the next morning, she could remain at the ranch under a written safety plan, with deputies checking the property and Ms. Gable making an early visit.

"This is not custody," Ms. Gable warned them. "It is an emergency placement while we identify her. No taking her off the property except for medical care. No posting photographs. No contacting anyone who claims to be family without going through us."

Mason nodded. "Understood."

Cole rubbed both hands down his face. "And what exactly are we supposed to do with an eight-month-old until morning?"

I looked at him. "Feed her. Change her. Keep her alive."

"Right. Easy."

"No. Basic. There is a difference."

At the clinic, the pediatrician found mild dehydration, teething irritation, and no obvious injuries. The baby's weight and developmental signs put her near eight months. Someone had cared for her carefully before leaving her at that gate.

The diaper bag contained formula, two bottles, wipes, clothing, and a small card with one name written in block letters: Sadie.

On the drive back to the ranch, Cole sat in the rear seat beside the carrier, watching her sleep.

"You think she's mine?" he asked.

"I think a note is not a paternity test," I said from the passenger seat.

Mason kept both hands on the wheel. "Harper doesn't need to be dragged into our history."

Cole laughed once, without humor. "Our history? You mean mine and hers?"

Mason's gaze flicked to me.

I stared out the windshield. "Do not start."

Two years ago, I had loved Cole enough to change my future for him. Three days later, he had packed his truck and vanished to chase a rodeo contract without even knowing what I had given up. I had spent twenty-four months learning never to make myself useful enough that a man could confuse dependence with love.

I was not about to relearn that lesson in the Hale family kitchen.

At the ranch, I wrote feeding instructions on a notepad and taped them beside the formula. I showed Mason how to check the bottle temperature against his wrist. I made Cole demonstrate how to fasten the diaper tabs without pinching skin.

Then I picked up my purse.

Cole blinked. "You're leaving?"

"Yes."

"But what if she wakes up?"

"She will. Babies do that."

Mason stood near the bassinet, one hand braced on the wooden rail. "Will you come back in the morning?"

I considered the question because he had asked it instead of assuming.

"For one training session," I said. "After that, you follow the county plan. I am not moving in, and I am not becoming the unpaid woman who makes this house functional."

Mason nodded once. "Understood."

Cole opened his mouth.

I pointed at him. "And you especially do not get to call this fate."

Sadie stirred in the bassinet and let out a thin, unhappy cry.

Both brothers turned toward her at once.

I walked to the door.

"Six a.m.," I said over my shoulder. "Tomorrow, you both learn how to do a full feed and diaper change without me touching anything."

Behind me, Cole muttered, "This is going to be a disaster."

Mason answered before I could.

"Then we learn fast."
