Chapter 2

I dropped two empty bottles and a stack of size-three diapers onto the kitchen island.

"Your turn," I told them. "One full feed and change each. Show me what you learned."

Cole leaned against the counter, twirling a plastic nipple ring around his index finger. "Come on, Harper. Don't you remember I'm the best at coaxing a reaction out of a tough crowd?"

"Sadie isn't a crowd," I replied, crossing my arms. "She's an infant. And right now, she's your audience of one."

At eight months, Sadie could sit with support, grab anything within reach, and communicate disapproval at remarkable volume. Caring for her was not complicated because she was fragile. It was complicated because she was fast, curious, and entirely dependent on adults who paid attention.

Down the counter, Mason dumped a scoop of formula into the sink. He grabbed a fresh bottle, his jaw tight, and started over. He had messed up the water-to-powder ratio on his first try. He didn't complain, just stared at the measurement lines until his eyes crossed.

"You're treating her like a performance piece," I told Cole, watching him bounce on his heels.

Cole flashed that familiar crooked grin. "You used to fall for the act."

Mason stopped stirring the formula. He set the bottle down hard enough to make the plastic rattle against the granite. He looked from Cole to me, his dark eyes narrowing. "What exactly happened between you two?"

"Nothing that concerns this baby," I snapped, cutting Cole off before he could open his mouth. "That is my old baggage, Mason. I am not letting either of you use my life as a new bargaining chip in whatever brotherly war you have going on."

Two hours later, Sadie finally went down for a nap. I laid her in the bassinet and reached for a fresh fleece jacket. As I tugged the corner of her receiving blanket, something hard clinked against the wooden slats.

I fished it out. A silver horse charm, no bigger than a quarter, attached to a broken clasp.

My stomach tightened. I walked straight into the living room and held it out to Mason.

"Three months ago," I said, keeping my voice low. "I worked a night shift at the ER. A pregnant woman came in. Her name was Lily Carter."

Mason took the charm from my palm. "And?"

"She had deep bruising on her upper arm. Claimed she fell down some stairs." I watched Mason trace the engraved mane of the silver horse. "When she left against medical advice, she was clutching an identical charm in her fist."

Mason's gaze snapped up to mine. "Are you saying she's the mother?"

"I'm saying I saw someone who might be connected to this baby. I can't ID her just from a memory, and I won't violate hospital privacy protocols to dig up her chart."

Mason didn't push. He didn't demand I hack the system or break my oath. Instead, he pulled a plastic sandwich bag from a nearby drawer, dropped the charm inside, and sealed it.

"I'll give this to the sheriff," Mason said.

A fraction of the tension in my shoulders eased. His restraint surprised me.

The front door clicked shut a minute later as Mason headed out to meet the assigned social worker on the porch. Cole immediately stepped into the living room, blocking my path back to the nursery.

"I left badly back then," Cole said, his tone dropping the playful edge. "I admit that. But I knew you didn't really want the cowboy life, Harper. I did you a favor."

I stared at him, letting the silence stretch until he shifted his weight.

"A favor?" I asked. "You think you left because I didn't want the dirt and the early mornings?"

"You were always meant for bigger things."

"I wanted the Dallas fellowship," I said, the words sharp and clipped. "You told me you were staying here. You promised you wouldn't run again. So I withdrew my application."

Cole froze. The easy confidence melted right off his face. "You withdrew it? For me?"

"You didn't know because you packed your bags three days later."

He reached out, aiming for my wrist. "Harper, I—"

I stepped back, putting two feet of solid floor between us. "Don't. There is no reset button here."

Cole dropped his hand, but his eyes flared with stubborn heat. "You're still here. You're helping us with the baby. You wouldn't stay at this ranch if you didn't still feel something for me."

"I am a pediatric nurse," I told him, my voice turning to ice. "From now on, I will only confirm care arrangements with Mason or the social worker. Do not ever mistake my professional help for old feelings again."

By six o'clock, the fragile peace shattered.

Sadie wailed, a high-pitched, reedy sound that scraped against the walls. She batted the bottle away, spilling warm milk across my shirt, and clawed frantically at her right ear.

"Get the diaper bag," I ordered, lifting her to my shoulder. "We are going to the clinic."

Mason grabbed the canvas bag from the sofa without a single question, shoving keys into his pocket.

Cole threw his hands up. "She was fine yesterday! Babies cry, Harper. You're overreacting."

I turned on him, adjusting my grip on the screaming infant. "The most dangerous thing you can do while caring for a baby is treating 'fine yesterday' as proof for today. Move."

The waiting room fluorescent lights buzzed overhead. The on-call pediatrician checked Sadie's ears, ruling out an acute infection, but instructed us to monitor her temperature through the night.

I walked out of the exam room, rubbing the dried milk stain on my collar.

Mason stood by the reception desk. He wasn't looking at the discharge papers. He held the plastic bag up to the harsh overhead light, staring at the silver horse charm inside.

I approached him, ready to ask for the keys.

He didn't turn his head. His knuckles were white where they gripped the plastic.

"That woman named Lily," Mason asked, his voice hollow. "Did she look like my father?"
