PowerTunnel Review
PowerTunnel is an extensible proxy server built on LittleProxy that runs locally on your device. It re-routes and modifies HTTP(S) traffic to work around Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) restrictions without routing traffic through third‑party servers and without changing your IP address. The app is portable, does not require root access, and includes an SDK so developers can extend its behavior with plugins.
PowerTunnel’s design makes it a different approach from conventional VPNs or remote proxies: traffic manipulation happens on-device, preserving direct network routes and minimising added latency while providing a practical tool for anti‑censorship use cases.
How it works — core components and developer extensibility
PowerTunnel creates a local proxy server and applies protocols and transformations (including LittleProxy‑MITM for HTTPS handling) so modified traffic can bypass DPI systems. Two plugins ship by default:
LibertyTunnel — the built‑in anti‑censorship plugin.
DNS Resolver — provides DNS over HTTPS support for private, encrypted name resolution.
An SDK is provided so you can write and install plugins as .jar files in the plugins directory. The project is open source and can be built with Gradle; the GitHub repository supplies documentation and community resources for developers.
Practical value and platform support
PowerTunnel is cross‑platform and includes an Android build, so plugins authored for the desktop proxy can also run on supported Android devices. Because it runs locally and does not proxy traffic through external servers, it preserves the device’s IP and aims to limit performance impact. The app is useful where DPI filtering is in place and users need a tool that focuses on traffic modification rather than IP masking.
Deployment and safety notes
PowerTunnel is distributed as a portable Java application: download the binary, place it where you want, and launch the executable; plugins are installed by adding .jar files to the plugins folder. The project’s GitHub page contains build instructions and additional details. PowerTunnel does not change your IP address, and its effectiveness depends on the current DPI implementations it encounters. Use responsibly and in accordance with applicable laws and policies.
