Chapter 3

After we got home, my chronic migraines flared up.

It was an old ailment that plagued me during times of stress. The pain was blinding, my temples throbbing as if being drilled. Cold sweat beaded on my forehead, and my vision began to blur.

Alistair was on the sofa, reading The Wall Street Journal. Hearing my sharp intake of breath, he rushed over, catching me just as I collapsed. His eyes were filled with panic.

"Juliana! What's wrong? Is it the migraine again?"

Seeing the genuine concern in his eyes, I felt a flicker of disorientation.

For a moment, it was as if the Alistair from twenty years ago had returned.

"Yes… it's bad… I can't see," I managed to choke out.

"Don't panic. I'm taking you to the ER. Right now."

He was about to bend down and lift me into his arms.

Just then, his phone rang.

The special ringtone he had set exclusively for Cassidy.

Alistair froze. His hand went to his phone on instinct.

Cassidy's voice came through, filled with her usual performative helplessness. "Alistair… I burned my wrist with my curling iron. It's blistering… it hurts so much… Am I going to have a scar?"

Alistair's face went white—whiter than it had when he saw me on the verge of blindness.

"Cassidy, don't cry! Don't move! Run it under cold water. I'll be there in a minute!"

He hung up. He looked at me, pale and trembling in his arms, and I saw a flicker of struggle in his eyes. It was instantly replaced by resolve.

"Juliana, Cassidy's hurt. She burned herself. You know how scared she is of pain. I have to go to her."

I stared at him in disbelief. My vision was blurry, but my heart saw with perfect clarity. "Alistair, I can barely see. You're leaving me for a blister Cassidy got from a curling iron?"

Alistair frowned, his tone shifting to accusation, as if I were being unreasonable.

"Why are you being so difficult? Your migraines are a chronic thing. You've been through this dozens of times; you know the drill. Take a couple of painkillers and lie down in a dark room. Cassidy is different. She's all alone, and she's probably having a complete breakdown."

On a nearby sofa, my son Miles, wearing noise-canceling gaming headphones, had overheard. He pulled off one earcup and sighed impatiently.

"Mom, stop being so dramatic. Aunt Cassidy got burned. That's an emergency. You can't even see a headache. If it hurts that bad, just call an Uber to a clinic. Don't waste Dad's time. Auntie's waiting."

My daughter Paige rolled her eyes, scrolling through her phone. "Seriously. Always competing with Aunt Cassidy for attention, even over who's sicker. It's pathetic, Mom."

My husband's choice. My children's cruelty. Each word was a dull knife, twisting in my heart.

I let go of Alistair's sleeve. My heart went completely cold.

"Fine. Go."

Alistair seemed to think I was finally being "reasonable." Without another second to comfort me, he rushed out the door.

I endured the excruciating pain alone. I managed to get myself out of the house and waited for the Uber I'd had to call for myself.

After a painkiller shot and a trip to the pharmacy at a private clinic, I paused at the corner of a hallway in the VIP lounge.

Through a half-open door, I saw a familiar back.

Alistair was holding Cassidy's wrist as if it were a holy relic. There was nothing more than a tiny, insignificant red mark on it.

But he was bent over it, gently blowing on the "wound," his eyes full of tenderness.

"There… feel better? I'm here now."

Standing in the shadows of the hallway, my eyes burned.

Twenty years ago, when we were still college sweethearts, I had sliced my hand on a model-making blade. Alistair's reaction had been identical—eyes red with worry, holding my hand and blowing on it for ten minutes straight.

"Juliana's hands are for creating great architecture," he'd said, "not for getting hurt."

Now, he had transferred that entire universe of tenderness to another woman.

In the room, Cassidy leaned against Alistair's chest, her voice sickly sweet and manipulative.

"Alistair, you came so quickly… Juliana won't be angry, will she? Her headache seemed really bad…"

Alistair stroked her hair, his tone casual.

"Don't worry about her. She's been a housewife for twenty years; she just knows how to depend on me. She wouldn't know how to survive without me. She wouldn't dare be angry. I'll buy her a gift later, and she'll get over it."

Cassidy smiled triumphantly, burrowing deeper into his jacket. "You're the best, Alistair. Only you truly love me."

I bit down hard on my lip, tasting rust.

So that was it. In his mind, my silence and tolerance weren't love—they were dependence.

He was so convinced I couldn't leave that he felt free to trample my dignity without a second thought.

I turned and walked away. This time, I didn't cry.

The house was empty when I got home.

I walked into the kitchen and looked at the "gifts" Alistair had given me over the years.

The top-of-the-line Vitamix, so I could make his green smoothies. The industrial-grade dishwasher, so I could clean up faster. And the "anniversary gift"—the smart yoga mat.

They weren't gifts. They were tools to make me a more efficient servant.

I grabbed a thick, black industrial trash bag.

Expressionless, I swept the cheap aprons, discounted kitchen gadgets, and drugstore hand cream he'd casually thrown my way into the garbage.

Then, I went to the master bedroom. From the back of the closet, I dug out my master's degree from Yale, my architect's license, and the signed divorce agreement.

I neatly packed these documents—the proof that Juliana Pierce was an individual, not just Mrs. Grayson—into a suitcase.

Just then, the front door opened.

Alistair was back.

He was in a good mood, humming. He carried takeout fried chicken for the kids and a small, ribbon-wrapped box.

He froze the moment he walked in, seeing the enormous black trash bag in the foyer and me, standing there with a suitcase.

"Juliana? What are you doing? Why did you throw out all the kitchen stuff?"

He walked over, a note of confusion in his voice.

"What's all this? Are you throwing another tantrum?"

I quietly zipped the suitcase, tucked it into a corner, and looked him straight in the eye.

"The house is too cluttered. It was making me feel claustrophobic. I wanted to clean up."

Hearing my calm voice, Alistair relaxed. He didn't care what I threw away, as long as I wasn't making a scene, as long as I was still in the house.
