Chapter 3

The Grand Ballroom of the Pierre Hotel glittered under the glow of towering crystal chandeliers. Waiters in white waistcoats wove through Manhattan’s medical elite, carrying silver trays loaded with vintage champagne. St. Jude Hospital’s seventieth-anniversary gala was in full swing, and the air was thick with the scent of expensive perfume and unrestrained vanity.

At the center of the room stood Nathan.

He wore a bespoke midnight-blue tuxedo, his posture straight and brimming with self-satisfaction. Chloe clung to his left arm in a shimmering rose-gold gown, smiling sweetly at every camera flash while resting her hand delicately over his forearm.

A few feet away, Eleanor held court before a circle of hospital trustees and prominent donors.

"Nathan is simply in a league of his own," Eleanor declared, her voice carrying effortlessly over the string quartet. "By the end of this evening, the board will officially confirm him as the youngest Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery in the country. And more importantly, St. Jude is finalizing an exclusive ten-billion-dollar partnership with Vance Medical Holdings to fund his artificial heart valve project."

Applause and flattering murmurs rippled through the surrounding crowd.

"You must be so proud, Eleanor," one senior trustee remarked. "With an overseas giant backing Dr. Hayes, St. Jude will dominate the eastern seaboard."

"A mother always knows her son's worth," Eleanor preened, sipping her wine. "Nathan was built for greatness. He just needed the right environment—and the right partner by his side."

She threw an approving smile toward Chloe, who beamed back with feigned modesty. Nathan adjusted his platinum cufflinks, soaking in the praise as though he already owned the city.

I stood near the arched foyer, watching the spectacle with cold amusement.

My fractured left arm was secured beneath the structured silhouette of a tailored black evening coat. In my right hand, I held an obsidian-black invitation card stamped with an embossed platinum seal.

As I stepped toward the registration table, Chloe turned and caught sight of me.

Her smile vanished for a split second before twisting into a smirk. She tugged Nathan’s arm, whispering something in his ear before pulling him directly toward me. Eleanor followed close behind, her heels striking the polished floor with sharp, aggressive rhythm.

"Well, well," Chloe purred, looking me up and down. "Look who decided to crawl out of the woodwork. Did you seriously print a fake card just to sneak in for free hors d'oeuvres, Emma?"

Nathan frowned, his gaze hardening with immediate annoyance. "Emma? What are you doing here? Did you honestly think crashing a private charity gala would convince me to take you back?"

"I told you two days ago," I said evenly. "I'm not here for you."

"Save the lies," Nathan scoffed, lowering his voice into a harsh reprimand. "You're humiliating yourself. This is an invitation-only event for medical executives, board trustees, and major philanthropists. You don't belong in this room, Emma. Go home before you ruin my career milestone."

"She has no home to go to, Nathan," Eleanor cut in loudly, intentionally raising her voice to draw the attention of nearby guests. Several doctors and donors stopped their conversations, turning their heads toward our confrontation.

Eleanor crossed her arms, her eyes gleaming with venom.

"She signed divorce papers two days ago like an arrogant fool, and now she realizes she can't even afford rent," Eleanor announced to the gathering audience. "She came here to make a scene and drag my son down on the most important night of his life."

"I came because I was invited," I replied, holding up the black card.

Chloe let out a theatrical laugh, covering her mouth with her manicured fingers. "An obsidian black pass? Those are reserved exclusively for the top five global healthcare investors! You've been a housewife for three years, Emma. Where would you get an executive pass? You clearly forged it."

"Security!" Eleanor snapped, waving a hand toward the entrance.

Three burly security guards in dark suits immediately pushed through the crowd, surrounding me.

"Take this woman out of the building," Eleanor ordered sharply, pointing a manicured finger at my chest. "She is an unemployed trespasser attempting to harass St. Jude's executive staff. Throw her out onto the street where she belongs."

Whispers broke out among the onlookers.

"Is that Dr. Hayes's estranged wife?"

"How embarrassing... trying to gatecrash an anniversary gala."

Nathan looked down at me with cold condescension. "You brought this on yourself, Emma. If you had just apologized two days ago, I might have let you sit at a back table. Now you leave with nothing."

The lead guard reached out a heavy hand toward my right shoulder.

Before his fingers could touch my coat, the heavy brass double doors beside the main stage flew open with a resounding crash.

Marcus Thorne, the hospital's senior legal counsel, and Arthur King, St. Jude’s primary institutional shareholder, sprinted into the ballroom. Both men were drenched in sweat, their ties askew, clutching thick leather binders as if their lives depended on them.

"Stop! Stop right now!" Arthur King shouted into the microphone on the podium, violently cutting off the classical music.

The entire ballroom fell dead silent.

Eleanor frowned, clearly irritated by the interruption. "Mr. King? What is the meaning of this? We were just having security remove a nuisance before Nathan's promotion announcement—"

"Shut up, Eleanor!" Arthur King snapped, his voice shaking with terror through the sound system.

Eleanor froze, her face slackening in utter disbelief.

Arthur adjusted his glasses with trembling hands and leaned over the lectern. "As of twelve midnight, Vance Medical Holdings completed the acquisition package it had been assembling for months. It bought ninety percent of our secondary debt notes and exercised existing purchase and conversion rights to secure sixty-seven percent of our voting shares."

A collective gasp swept through the hall.

Nathan’s brow furrowed. "A sixty-seven percent buyout? That means... they have absolute controlling interest."

"That is correct, Dr. Hayes," Marcus Thorne announced into the second microphone, his voice ringing with grim finality. "Under the hospital corporation's bylaws, the controlling shareholder removed the old board by written consent. Vance Medical Holdings has appointed its primary heir as the new Chief Executive Officer and Chairwoman of the Board of St. Jude Hospital."

Chloe stepped forward, her voice tight with confusion. "Well... where is this new Chairwoman? When does Dr. Hayes receive his research funding?"

"She is already here," Arthur King said, pointing a shaking hand toward the entrance foyer.

The master lighting technician flipped the controls.

A brilliant, blinding white spotlight swung across the grand ceiling and pinned itself directly onto me.

Silence suffocated the ballroom.

I looked Nathan straight in the eye. With a single fluid motion of my right hand, I unbuttoned my tailored black coat and let it slide off my shoulders. The heavy fabric dropped cleanly to the floor.

Beneath it, I wore a bespoke floor-length gown of midnight silk. Fastened securely against the left lapel over my heart was a solid platinum brooch shaped like an eagle entwined around a caduceus—the private, century-old crest of my mother’s Vance family.

"Emma..." Nathan whispered, every drop of color draining from his face. "No... that's impossible. You're just... from a small-town pharmacy family upstate."

"You never bothered to ask where my family came from, Nathan," I said, my voice cutting through the quiet room like a scalpel. "You were too busy looking down on me."

I stepped past the frozen security guards, walking up the center aisle with effortless authority. Every step I took felt lighter than the last.

Beside me, Nathan’s fingers went slack around the stem of his champagne flute.

The crystal champagne flute in his hand slipped from his grip, crashing against the polished marble floor. The glass shattered into hundreds of sparkling shards, splashing vintage Dom Pérignon across Chloe’s expensive satin shoes.

Chloe shrieked, jumping backward, while Eleanor swayed on her feet, clutching a nearby cocktail table to keep from collapsing.

"She... she's the owner?" Eleanor choked out, her breath ragged. "The girl we treated like a maid... owns the hospital?"

I reached the platform and took the microphone from Arthur King’s trembling hands.

Before I could speak, the massive double doors at the main entrance swung wide once more.

A tall, imposing figure strode into the ballroom, flanked by four personal security officers. He wore an impeccably tailored charcoal suit, his silver-streaked dark hair combed back, his sharp hazel eyes commanding total dominance over the room.

The crowd parted instantly in absolute reverence.

"Dr. Alexander Cross..." someone whispered in awe. "The father of modern cardiothoracic surgery... he flew in from Geneva?"

Nathan stared at the legendary surgeon, his eyes wide with desperate hope. "Dr. Cross! Sir, I've read all your papers on aortic valve reconstruction! I'm Nathan Hayes, the incoming chief—"

Alexander Cross didn't even glance in his direction. He walked past Nathan as if the man were nothing more than a piece of discarded debris.

Alexander stepped onto the stage, stopped directly before me, and took my right hand. He bowed his head with effortless grace, pressing a firm, respectful kiss to the back of my knuckles.

"Emma," Alexander said, his deep voice carrying through the entire ballroom. "The board handover is complete. Per your instructions, the purge of St. Jude officially begins tonight."
