Chapter 2

POV: Liam Langford

Sunlight poured through the floor-to-ceiling glass of the penthouse suite at Hotel de Paris, blinding me as I opened my eyes.

My head throbbed from the endless bottles of champagne we had uncorked after the podium. Beside me, the silk sheets were rumpled, carrying the faint scent of Chloe’s French perfume.

I reached for my phone on the nightstand. The lock screen was flooded with thousands of notifications.

*#LiamAndChloe*

*#MonacoP1*

*#TheGoldenCoupleReturns*

Every motorsport outlet, tabloid, and luxury brand had plastered yesterday’s victory photo on their front page. The shot of me lifting Chloe onto the nosecone of Arrow’s display car had already broken social media engagement records. Arrow Racing’s estimated commercial valuation had jumped twelve percent overnight.

I swung my legs over the edge of the mattress and rotated my stiff wrists. My forearms burned from wrestling the steering wheel across seventy-eight laps of tight street circuit corners.

Usually, by seven in the morning, the nightstand would hold a freshly blended ginger-turmeric smoothie, my magnesium supplements, and warm arnica balm. Sierra was supposed to be kneeling by the bed, working the tension out of my tendons with her hands before the morning debrief.

The room was completely empty.

My personal assistant, Mark, tapped lightly on the suite door before stepping in with a dry-cleaned polo shirt.

"Did Sierra bring up my breakfast tray?" I asked, irritation sharpening my tone. "My forearms are locked up, and I specifically told her I needed the low-inflammation meal plan ready at dawn."

Mark hesitated, keeping his eyes on the floor. "No, Mr. Langford. I haven't seen her this morning."

I scoffed, snatching the shirt from his hands. "She's throwing a tantrum because I didn't take her to the gala. She needs to remember where she came from."

"Should I send someone to the motel?" Mark asked.

"No," I said coldly, pulling the shirt over my head. "Don't indulge her. Go to the ticket office, grab a general admission grandstand pass for the next race, and have a courier drop it off at her room. Tell her it’s a reward for keeping the logistics container organized. If she apologizes and acts grateful, I might let her into hospitality for Sunday brunch."

"Understood, sir."

Thirty minutes later, I walked down the paddock toward the Arrow Racing private motorhome. Mechanics and VIP guests stopped to applaud as I passed, calling out congratulations. I gave them practiced, confident smiles, basking in the glow of being the undisputed number one driver in the world.

I pushed open the door to my private driver debrief lounge.

"Sierra, get the ice packs," I announced, walking toward my desk without looking up. "And pull up lap forty-two's throttle traces. The rear axle felt loose on corner exit."

Silence answered me.

I looked up. The lounge was spotless, but Sierra wasn't sitting in her usual corner with her laptop.

There was no breakfast smoothie. No freshly ironed team jacket.

On the center of my glass desk sat a single manila folder. Resting on top of it was a pair of industrial shears and the plastic remnants of Sierra’s team access badge, cut cleanly into jagged confetti.

I frowned and picked up the folder.

Inside was a single legal document: *Petition for Dissolution of Marriage and Property Settlement Waiver.*

My eyes scanned the clauses in disbelief. Every box regarding asset distribution was checked in my favor.

Zero spousal support.

Zero claims to future race bonuses or endorsements.

Zero split of the properties.

At the bottom of the final page, her signature was stamped in clean, dark ink beside yesterday's date.

There was no angry note. No tear stains on the parchment. No demands, no threats, and no frantic questions about Chloe.

She had simply signed the papers to end three years of marriage and walked out into the night.

A door clicked behind me.

"Liam, darling, you should see the front page of *L'Équipe*," Helena said as she swept into the room.

My mother wore an immaculate beige designer suit, her platinum jewelry catching the morning light. Chloe walked beside her, clad in an emerald silk wrap dress, holding two iced coffees.

"Good morning, champion," Chloe purred, stepping up and pressing a kiss to my cheek. "Did you sleep well?"

I didn't answer. I stood frozen, staring at the document in my hand.

Helena noticed my expression and peered over my shoulder. Her eyes landed on the title of the papers, and a sharp, triumphant laugh escaped her lips.

"Well, look at that," Helena said, snatching the contract from my fingers. "The mechanic's daughter finally realized what she is. The trash took itself out."

Chloe leaned in, her lips curling into an amused smirk. "Wait, is this from that quiet little girl who used to carry your luggage? She actually thought she was your wife?"

"She was an embarrassment," Helena declared, tossing the papers back onto the glass desk with a flick of her wrist. "A dirty parasite who clung to your coattails when you were recovering from that crash. She probably thought playing hard to get would make you chase her with a million-dollar settlement."

Helena crossed her arms, her diamond rings flashing. "Without the paddock pass you gave her, she’s nothing. She doesn't have a penny to her name. She won't even be able to beg for scraps outside the turn four grandstands."

A strange, hollow thud hit the bottom of my stomach. An irritating itch of confusion scratched at my pride.

Sierra had never asked for money. She had spent every weekend analyzing telemetry until three in the morning, fixing my engine maps, making sure I never looked bad in front of the team. The idea of her simply vanishing without begging for an explanation felt wrong.

I scoffed, forcing a condescending smirk onto my face to shake off the unease.

"She's bluffing," I said, leaning against the edge of the desk. "She has no family, no connections, and nowhere to go. Give her seventy-two hours. Once her motel money runs out, she’ll be on her knees outside the pit gate, crying and begging me to take her back."

"Of course she will," Chloe said, wrapping her arms around my neck from behind, her nails lightly scratching my chest. "And you're going to ignore her, right? You're a superstar now, Liam. You belong with me."

Before I could answer, the heavy security door was thrown open with a violent bang.

Marcus Davies, our chief race engineer, burst into the lounge. His face was stark white, sweat soaking the collar of his Arrow Racing uniform. He was clutching a rugged diagnostic tablet with trembling hands.

"Liam! Helena!" Marcus shouted, gasping for breath. "We have a catastrophic system failure in the technical bay!"

Helena frowned in annoyance. "Marcus, lower your voice. Liam is resting before the sponsor luncheon. What could possibly be so urgent?"

"Everything is crashing!" Marcus stammered, holding up the tablet. The screen was flashing bright crimson warning boxes across every data stream. "Protocol Zero was triggered five minutes ago from an encrypted satellite node! Our licensed vehicle-dynamics models, brake-bias optimization tools, and engine-map development package—it's all locked!"

My heart skipped a beat. "What are you talking about? Just reboot the server and use our backup files."

"We can't!" Marcus cried, his voice cracking with panic. "The underlying patent holder executed a total revocation of authorization! The system isn't corrupted—our legal access keys were terminated at the root level! Legal ordered us to disable the affected modules, so we had to reload our last compliant baseline control map. We just ran a dyno test on the Barcelona chassis—the redline RPM dropped by eight percent!"

The blood drained from my face. "Eight percent? That’s impossible! That wipes out all our straight-line speed!"

"We're three seconds off the pace!" Marcus yelled, his hands shaking violently as error alarms began wailing from the garage below. "The engineering bay is completely paralyzed! If we can't unlock those patents before qualifying this weekend, Liam won't even make the grid!"
