Chapter 1

For three years, I was NHL star Marcus Cole’s secret wife. No public dates, no wedding ring, because his mother claimed a married athlete "couldn't sell jerseys." Tonight was our third anniversary. I sat in our penthouse suite waiting for him, only to open TikTok and see him live at his victory gala, wrapping his team jacket around his high school ex, Chloe. Then my phone buzzed. It was Marcus: "Chloe needs the penthouse for her photoshoot. Pack your bags and stay in the basement storage." His mother snatched the phone, sneering that a stray orphan should know her place. They forgot one thing: I never needed his hockey money. I was the sole heiress of Sterling Sports Capital. I signed the divorce papers, wiped my tears, and called my board. Tomorrow, I'm buying his deadliest rival.

ELENA'S POV

The scent of rosemary and seared steak filled the penthouse. Beyond the windows, a cool June rain blurred the Boston skyline. I set the final silver fork in place, adjusting the taper candles so their glow caught the velvet box between our plates.

Inside was a custom platinum hockey puck pendant. I had spent two months working with a jeweler to engrave Marcus's jersey number beside the date of our third wedding anniversary.

A banner notification popped up on my phone screen: Final Buzzer: Marcus Vance Leads the Boston Blades to Eastern Conference Championship Victory.

My chest tightened with pride. For three years, I had lived as a ghost. I had deleted my social media accounts, stayed out of the players' family section, and watched his games from this living room. Marcus and his management team insisted that his marketability depended on being an unattached superstar. I had accepted the silence because he promised that if the Blades won the conference title, he would tell the world about us.

Tonight was supposed to be the night he came home and kept that promise.

I picked up the remote and switched on the post-game livestream.

The screen filled with bright arena lights. Thousands of fans were screaming his name. I watched Marcus skate toward the presentation area, his captain's jersey bright against the ice.

He didn't head toward the locker room tunnel. Instead, he stopped near the boards, looking straight into the crowd with a wide smile.

A woman stepped onto the ice carpet, wearing white designer boots and a matching cashmere coat.

It was Chloe.

His high school sweetheart. She had moved to Paris four years ago to model and moved back to Boston last week. Apparently, she had come home to collect him.

Marcus didn't just greet her. In front of the broadcast cameras, he pulled her into his arms, lifting her off the ice carpet. When he set her down, he stripped off his conference-champions jacket and draped it over her shoulders.

Chloe buried her face in the collar, looking up at him with tearful eyes.

A reporter thrust a microphone into Marcus's face. "Marcus! An unbelievable game! Who gets the credit for keeping your head in the game through this brutal series?"

Marcus kept his arm locked firmly around Chloe's waist. He looked directly into the camera lens with a grin.

"Every second of tonight belongs to Chloe," Marcus said, his voice echoing through the arena speakers and into my quiet dining room. "She's the muse who's been by my side from the start. I wouldn't have won this title without her."

The arena roared. The live comment feed on the screen exploded with thousands of messages a second.

THEY ARE SO PERFECT TOGETHER.

ARE THEY DATING?!

PLEASE TELL ME CHLOE IS THE FUTURE MRS. VANCE.

The reporter grinned, leaning in. "Does this mean the league's most coveted bachelor is finally off the market?"

Marcus chuckled, shaking his head. "I'm still a completely free man. Single, unattached, and focused on the game and the people who truly inspire me."

The room seemed to lose all its air.

I stood frozen in the middle of the dining room, the television screen glowing with the image of my husband wrapping his fingers around another woman's hand.

A sharp beep broke the silence.

The heavy front door unlocked and swung open. I turned, expecting the nightmare to somehow unravel, but it wasn't Marcus who walked in.

It was his mother and business manager, Cynthia.

Cynthia swept inside, dressed in a sharp tailored pantsuit. She didn't look at me. Her eyes scanned the room, landing on the flickering candles, the polished wine glasses, and the steak cooling on the table.

A look of disgust crossed her face.

"Still playing house, I see," Cynthia said, walking straight to the table.

With a careless flick of her hand, she shoved the crystal wine glasses off the table. They shattered against the hardwood floor, dark red wine spreading out across the cream rug.

"What are you doing?" I asked, my voice flat.

"Fixing a problem before it gets messy," Cynthia said. She threw a spare keycard onto the table. "That opens the basement staff room. You have twenty minutes to clear out of this penthouse."

I looked from the broken glass on the floor up to her face. "This is our home."

"Vance Sports Agency leases this suite, and I manage the company," Cynthia said. "Chloe needs somewhere private. Tomorrow morning, a lifestyle brand is shooting a joint campaign with her and Marcus right here. We cannot have your domestic clutter ruining the aesthetic."

"And where exactly am I supposed to go?"

Cynthia waved a manicured hand toward the hallway. "Take the service elevator down to the basement storage unit. There's a cot in the back room behind the equipment cages. No windows, so no paparazzi can spot you coming or going. Stay there until the press tour is over."

She said it as though a company lease gave her the right to put me out of my own home. I could have called my lawyer. Instead, I looked at the cot key lying where my anniversary card should have been.

I had spent three years arguing for a place in this family. I was done applying. While Cynthia inspected the table, I sent our family steward a message: Arthur. Bring a car. I'm leaving.

My phone rang in my pocket. The caller ID flashed Marcus's name.

I slid the green bar and brought the phone to my ear. "Marcus."

"Elena," his voice came through the speaker, crisp, rushed, and entirely devoid of warmth. "My mother is upstairs, right? Good. Listen to me. Don't make a scene tonight. Chloe needs the penthouse for the brand launch tomorrow. It's a seven-figure endorsement deal for the agency."

"You told the entire country you were single ten minutes ago," I said calmly.

"Because that's what the public buys," he snapped, his tone sharp with irritation. "Don't start acting childish on a night like this. You know how important this championship is for my career. Cooperate with my mother, pack your things, and go downstairs. I don't need your emotional drama distracting me from the post-game press conference."

In the background of the call, a soft, familiar giggle drifted through the line.

"Marcus," Chloe said near the receiver. "Can you help me with this zipper? I need to change before the club reception."

"Hold on, Chloe," Marcus muttered into the phone, not even bothering to cover the mic. Then he spoke to me again, his voice cold and impatient. "I'll deal with you tomorrow. Just do what you're told."

The line clicked. He hung up.

I lowered the phone and slid it back into my pocket.

Cynthia stood by the doorway, her arms crossed over her chest, watching me with a smug, expectant smirk. "Well? Are you packing, or do I need to have the building security toss your bags onto the curb?"

"You don't need to call anyone," I said.

I didn't shed a tear. I didn't raise my voice. I turned my back on the shattered crystal, the spilled wine, and the woman standing in my dining room, and walked down the hallway into the master bedroom.

I left the sponsor gowns and display jewelry hanging in the wardrobe. They were loans from the agency, not gifts. I packed three old notebooks, a few clothes I had bought myself, and the toiletries that fit in my small carry-on.

Then I opened the wall safe behind the vanity mirror and took out my passport, birth certificate, and a sealed envelope.

I had put that envelope there two months earlier, after Marcus missed my mother's funeral for a New York gala. Chloe had flown over from Paris for that event. He had called it a work obligation, then sent me a photograph of their table by mistake.

Inside was the separation agreement my lawyer had prepared at my request. Signing it would not end the marriage. It would tell him I was ready to file.

I set the papers on the vanity and signed the proposed terms. I was asking for none of his earnings. My lawyer would handle the disclosures and protect the assets that were already mine.

I left a copy on the dining table beside the pendant and slipped the second signed copy into the document sleeve of my suitcase. He could keep the anniversary gift. I wanted proof that I had stopped waiting.

After nearly half an hour in the bedroom, I put on my trench coat, picked up my purse, and wheeled my suitcase toward the foyer.
