Chapter 3

ELENA'S POV

I pulled the limousine door shut, leaving Matteo on the other side of the rain.

For a moment, I could still see him through the dark glass. He stood beneath the entrance canopy, one hand lifted as though he could order the car to stop.

Then we moved, and the building disappeared behind us.

Gabriel sat opposite me, a folded cashmere blanket beside him. His hair had gone almost completely silver since he had taught me to read a balance sheet at my father's desk.

"Welcome back, Donna Elena."

"You can drop the title."

"Not this morning."

He handed me the blanket. I wrapped it around my damp shoulders and set the duffel at my feet. Only then did I notice how hard I had been gripping its strap.

Gabriel looked at my bare left hand but asked no questions about it.

"The trustees acknowledged your hold overnight," he said. "The advance did not leave the account. The remaining conditions were not met, so they can refuse it. Do you want to continue the review?"

"No more exceptions. Decline the advance. Suspend further drawings under the working-capital facility as the contracts allow. Preserve every record."

"Seventy-four million in the pending advance. Forty million in undrawn credit."

"Vance money in both cases. Nothing belonging to another depositor moves."

He turned the tablet toward me. I authenticated the instruction and watched the treasury team's acknowledgement appear.

The money stayed in Vance accounts. Matteo had built his life around the assumption that it would always be there when he asked. Not today.

Gabriel placed a small rosewood box on the seat between us.

Inside lay my father's obsidian signet ring, the crowned serpent cut into its face.

I slid it onto my right index finger. The fit had not changed.

"He married Elena Vale," I said, looking at the crest. "He never cared what came before her."

Vale was my mother's surname and my legal name. Vance was the family company I had inherited. Its trustees knew both names. Matteo knew only the woman who brought his coffee and approved documents he could not be bothered to understand.

"You asked us to keep your private life private," Gabriel said. "You never asked us to erase you."

His tablet rang. The treasury desk was forwarding an incoming conference call from Marco, the Moretti chief financial officer.

Gabriel accepted it on the recorded client line and kept our microphone muted while the connection announcement played. Matteo's voice burst through the speaker before Marco could finish introducing himself.

"Put your principal on. This is an administrative mistake."

"It isn't," the treasury officer said. "The conditions for the advance were not satisfied. The written notice is in your counsel's inbox."

"We have crews to pay."

"Then you need another source of funding."

A second voice interrupted, older and rougher. Don Carlo Moretti, Matteo's father. He had stepped back from daily leadership, but every major debt still carried his approval.

"We are discussing a temporary difficulty," Carlo said. "No one benefits from destroying a client."

"The principal will consider any new proposal at the summit," the officer replied. "There is no commitment to extend further credit."

"Who is the principal?" Matteo demanded. "I've dealt with your trustees for three years."

"Your invitation identifies the Vance delegation."

"Then tell them we'll be there."

The call ended. The unanswered demand lingered after the speaker went quiet. Matteo had asked another man where his money would come from. For the first time, there had been no answer.

Gabriel watched me.

"Do you regret it?"

I touched the edge of my ring. "I regret how long it took."

***

By late afternoon, my bag was in a locked suite at the Vance townhouse, the black folder in my attorney's custody, and the divorce action underway. A process server had delivered the required papers. My attorney had the proof of service; Matteo's fury could not tear that apart.

I had showered and slept for three hours. Now a black velvet gown hung beside the dressing-room mirror, waiting for the summit.

My attorney's voice came through my phone.

"Your settlement proposal does not surrender the trust's independent rights," she said. "But remember, leaving the house did not end the marriage. The judgment still has to be entered."

"I understand."

"And your cooperation agreement has limits."

I sat on the edge of the bed.

Six weeks earlier, I had given her records of the transactions I had helped disguise. Through her, I had learned that federal investigators were already building a case against Carlo's organization. My evidence had filled gaps in an investigation older than my decision to leave.

The written agreement covered specified past conduct disclosed to the named prosecutors. It required truthful cooperation and repayment of the fees under review. It did not protect new crimes, hidden transactions, or lies. Its promises bound only the authorities named in it.

"I haven't concealed anything," I said.

"Keep it that way. You are not buying an acquittal with somebody else's guilt."

"No. I'm finally telling the truth about mine."

After she hung up, I opened the velvet watch box. The engraved anniversary date caught the light.

I shut it again and put it in the suite's safe beside my passport and private drive. The original financial evidence already existed in more than one place. No one could erase it by taking my bag.

My phone rang again.

Salvatore.

I had known him since before I met Matteo. Once, over a set of disastrous shipping forecasts, he had asked me to dinner. I had refused because Matteo had already begun to make me laugh.

"Gabriel told me you left," he said.

"I gave him permission to call you. Not to request a cavalry charge."

"Did anyone hurt you?"

The directness of the question unsettled me more than a threat would have.

"I'm safe."

"That wasn't the question."

I looked at my reflection. "Not in a way your men can fix."

He was silent for a moment.

"You asked me to stay out of your marriage," he said. "I thought you wanted privacy. I didn't know what he was doing inside that house."

"I wasn't telling anyone."

"You can tell me now."

I almost did. Instead, I ran my thumb over the sapphire at my throat.

"Tonight, I want to walk into that room under my own name."

"Then you will. I'll be there after the security briefing."

"They may ask you to cover their debts."

"They can ask."

"And what will you want from me?"

His answer came without hesitation. "Dinner. When you choose it. Not a debt, Elena. Not a favor you have to repay."

My grip eased around the phone.

"I haven't said yes."

"I know."

Outside the dressing room, Gabriel announced that the car was ready. I stood, reached for the black gown, and let the quiet stretch between us for one more breath.

"Salvatore?"

"Yes?"

"No one is hiding me tonight."

"No," he said. "Tonight, they make room for you."
