Chapter 2

The front door unlocked with a quiet click at 1:14 AM.

I sat upright on the living room sofa in the dark, my coat still folded across my lap.

Ethan stepped into the foyer, loosening his blue tie with one hand. The scent of gin and expensive restaurant air rolled in behind him. He flipped the wall switch, and when the overhead light flooded the room, he froze for a split second before his face smoothed into an easy mask.

"Nothing happened," he said, taking off his suit jacket and tossing it onto the armchair. "It was networking."

I didn't move. "Do you know what today was?"

Ethan stopped unbuttoning his cuffs. His hands remained poised at his wrists.

One second. Two seconds. Three seconds.

His eyes flicked toward the small calendar on the hallway console, then widened slightly as the date finally registered.

"Claire, come on," he said, blowing out a short breath. "It's one dinner."

The words landed on the floor between us, hollow and flat. No apology. No regret. Just irritation that he had been caught off guard.

I didn't scream. I didn't throw anything. The fury that had simmered in my chest all evening simply cooled into a sharp, brittle block of ice.

I stood up, picked up my purse, and walked past him toward the stairs.

"Claire—"

"Go to sleep," I said.

***

My eyes opened at 6:00 AM sharp.

The master bedroom was quiet except for Ethan's rhythmic breathing beside me. For six years, my feet hitting the hardwood floor had been the starter pistol for the household's morning marathon. I would pack two distinct lunchboxes, brew Ethan's dark roast, press his collar, fold Olivia's leotard into her dance bag, and write a reminder note for Ben's hockey coach.

Today, I walked into the kitchen and ground exactly enough beans for one mug.

I drank my coffee in complete silence by the kitchen window. I didn't touch the skillet. I didn't open the refrigerator to pull out bread or deli meat. When my mug was empty, I rinsed it, set it in the drying rack, and walked upstairs to my home office.

I packed my laptop, charger, and project dossiers into my leather tote. I dressed in a tailored navy pantsuit, slipped on my pumps, and picked up my car keys.

By 6:45 AM, I was pulling out of the driveway.

The fallout began seventy minutes later.

I had just walked through the glass doors of my architecture firm when my phone vibrated in my jacket pocket.

I tapped the screen against my ear. "Claire."

"Where are the kids' lunches?" Ethan's voice was frantic, competing with the blare of a cartoon on the living room TV. "Ben's backpack is empty. I looked in the fridge, and there’s no sliced turkey or fruit cups."

"Figure it out," I said, and ended the call.

At 7:42 AM, as I sat at my desk reviewing a commercial development brief, the phone rang again.

"Claire, Olivia is crying!" Ethan yelled over the line. "Her black leotard isn't in her dresser! Rehearsal starts in forty minutes, and she says she can't wear the pink one!"

"It's in the laundry hamper," I said evenly. "Where she dropped it yesterday."

"Why didn't you wash it?"

"Figure it out." I tapped the red button.

At 8:15 AM, the firm's senior partner knocked on my glass door, stepping inside with a plane ticket confirmation printed in his hand. "Claire, Cole Urban Development just pushed up the Denver kickoff meeting. Their founder wants to review the commercial zoning permits in person this afternoon. Can you be on the twelve-fifteen flight?"

"I'll head to the airport right now," I said without missing a beat.

My phone rang the moment I stepped into the elevator.

"Where are my gray slacks?" Ethan demanded, his voice strained and breathless. "I have a nine o'clock presentation with the board, and the dry cleaner didn't drop off the garments yesterday!"

"You didn't schedule a pickup," I said.

"You always schedule it!"

"Figure it out."

I hung up and put the phone on vibrate.

By the time my rideshare dropped me off at the airport terminal at 10:20 AM, my screen showed four missed calls from Ethan and two from his mother. I stepped into the security line, and the phone buzzed continuously in my palm until I finally answered.

"Claire!" Ethan shouted, sounding completely unhinged. "My mother has been waiting on her front porch for twenty minutes! The driver you booked for her cardiology appointment never showed up!"

"I booked it for ten," I said, sliding my carry-on bag onto the conveyor belt. "Call the car service."

"She has a ten-thirty follow-up! She's furious! What is the name of her clinic? Who is the doctor?"

"Figure it out, Ethan."

"Claire, stop this! This isn't funny!"

I took a breath and kept my voice level. "I have a flight for business. Goodbye."

By 11:45 AM, I was sitting at Gate B12, waiting for Group 1 boarding.

My phone buzzed again. It was Ethan for the seventh time.

Against my better judgment, I answered. The sheer panic in his voice kept pulling at my ingrained reflexes.

"What is the school pickup code for Ben?" he asked rapidly, the sound of car horns honking in the background. "And where do you keep the backup inhaler? What was the name of Eleanor's cardiologist again?"

I pinched the bridge of my nose, sighing into the receiver. "The code is 4821. The inhaler is in the top basket inside the pantry, behind the oatmeal. Eleanor’s doctor is Dr. Albright at Mercy West. You need to call their front desk to explain why she's late."

"And what about Ben's dairy restriction form?"

"Taped to the inside of the pantry door," I rattled off on pure autopilot. "And make sure Olivia eats a protein bar before dance, or her blood sugar will drop by three."

I talked him through two more logistical crises before he finally hung up without saying thank you.

I leaned back against the airport chair, exhaling a long, exhausted breath.

"Was that an emergency?"

The voice came from across the aisle. It was deep, calm, and perfectly measured.

I turned my head. Sitting two seats over was a man in a sharply cut charcoal overcoat and a crisp white dress shirt. He had striking, angular features, dark hair neatly combed, and a pair of observant gray eyes fixed directly on me. He held a leather-bound portfolio across his knee, closed and unread.

He had clearly listened to the entire ten-minute exchange.

"No," I said, feeling a slight flush rise to my cheeks. "Just my husband looking for things."

The man frowned slightly, his expression neither mocking nor unkind, but undeniably piercing.

"Are you his wife or his personal assistant?"

The question hit me like a sudden drop in cabin pressure.

"I'm his wife," I said stiffly, my defense mechanism kicking in before I could stop it. "I'm just better at this stuff."

The man looked at me, unhurried and steady. He didn't offer a patronizing smile or an apology.

"Being better at something doesn't make it automatically yours," he said quietly.

Before I could answer, the gate agent's voice crackled over the intercom: *"Flight 1482 with nonstop service to Denver International is now boarding Group 1. Please have your boarding pass and government ID ready."*

The man stood up smoothly, picking up a sleek leather briefcase from the floor. He glanced down at me, gave a brief, polite nod, and walked toward the boarding lane.

I sat frozen in my seat for several seconds, his words ringing in the hollow spaces of my mind.

*Being better at something doesn't make it automatically yours.*

My phone vibrated violently against my leg.

I looked down at the screen. A new text message from Ethan sat at the top of the display.

*Which cycle do I run the washer on for Olivia's leotard? Quick wash or heavy duty? It's beeping at me and won't start.*

I stared at the glowing text. I pictured him standing in our laundry room, helpless before a machine with three buttons, expecting me to fix it from a different state.

My thumb hovered over the keyboard.

Then, I swiped down from the top edge of the screen, pulled up the control menu, and tapped the small airplane icon.

The cellular bars vanished into gray.

I slid the dead phone into my pocket, stood up, and walked toward the gate.
