Chapter 1

Elizabeth Morris had nothing left in this world.

She lived in a small town at the edge of the kingdom, and her life fell apart two years ago when her father died. He left her with his second wife, and that woman hated Elizabeth. There was no money and no family who wanted her, so she stayed in the house that should have been hers, but her stepmother made sure she knew every day that she was not wanted there.

Elizabeth was an orphan now.

But she lived like a servant in her own home.

She washed the floors, scrubbed the dishes and carried heavy buckets of water from the well before sunrise. She also slept in a tiny room with a bed that was too small, and her stepmother gave her the worst work and the smallest portions of food. The woman seemed to enjoy watching Elizabeth suffer.

But Elizabeth had one secret that made her life less miserable.

Prince Damian loved her.

He was going to be crowned King tonight at the palace, and the whole kingdom would be there to watch the coronation. After he put on the crown, he would announce which woman he chose to be his Queen, but Prince Damian had promised Elizabeth he would choose her.

They had been meeting in secret for eight months now. He climbed through her window after dark and left before sunrise, and in those stolen hours he made her feel like she was worth something. He touched her like she was precious and fucked her until she forgot her own name. He moaned promises while he was cumming inside her, telling her she was going to be his Queen.

Elizabeth had been preparing for tonight's coronation for weeks.

She saved every coin she could hide from her stepmother and bought beautiful blue silk from the market. She spent her nights sewing a dress by hand after everyone was asleep, making every stitch perfect. She worked on the dress until her fingers hurt and her eyes burned, but she did not stop until it was exactly right.

Tonight was supposed to change everything.

Elizabeth had just laid the finished dress on her bed when her stepmother walked in. The door slammed open so hard it hit the wall.

Her stepmother stood there with her arms crossed and that cruel look on her face. "What do you think you are doing?"

Elizabeth's heart dropped, but she forced herself to stand up straight. "I am getting ready for the coronation. The whole kingdom is invited and I am going there to watch Prince Damian become the King."

Her stepmother's eyes went to the blue dress on the bed and her mouth twisted. "You? You're going to the coronation? In that dress?"

"Yes," Elizabeth answered, trying to sound brave even though her hands were shaking from fear. "I made it myself and I am wearing it tonight."

"No, you are not!" her stepmother snapped, walking into the room. "You are not going anywhere because you have a lot of work to do."

"What work? I finished all my chores for the day. I washed the floors and scrubbed the dishes and carried all the water and—"

"Not that work," her stepmother interrupted with a cold smile. "The laundry. All of it needs to be washed and hung to dry before midnight."

Elizabeth felt her stomach drop. "What laundry? I already washed everything this morning. Every sheet and tablecloth and—"

"Well, you need to wash them again," her stepmother said simply. "They are not clean enough."

"That is not true!" Elizabeth's voice rose before she could stop it. "I spent three hours washing them this morning! They are perfectly clean! You watched me hang them yourself!"

"Are you calling me a liar?" her stepmother asked, her voice dangerously quiet.

"I am saying they do not need to be washed again," Elizabeth said, trying to keep her voice steady. "I am going to the coronation. Everyone in the kingdom is invited and I have the right to—"

The slap came so fast Elizabeth did not see it coming.

Her stepmother's hand cracked across her face so hard that Elizabeth's head snapped to the side. Pain exploded across her cheek and her eyes filled with tears immediately. Her ears started ringing and she stumbled backward.

"How dare you speak to me that way," her stepmother hissed. "You are an ungrateful little bitch. After everything I have done for you. Giving you a roof over your head and food to eat when I could have thrown you out on the street."

Elizabeth put her hand to her burning cheek and tasted blood in her mouth from where her teeth cut into her lip. Tears were spilling down her face but she forced herself to look her stepmother in the eye. "I am still going to the coronation. You cannot stop me."

Her stepmother's face twisted with rage. She turned and grabbed the blue silk dress from the bed where Elizabeth had laid it so carefully. She held it up with both hands.

"Is this what you think makes you special?" her stepmother asked. "This cheap piece of fabric?"

"Please put my dress down," Elizabeth said, and panic flooded through her. "I spent weeks making it. I worked so hard and—"

Her stepmother started tearing the dress apart.

The sound of silk ripping cut through the air. Elizabeth watched in horror as her stepmother tore the gown right down the middle with her bare hands. The beautiful embroidery that Elizabeth had spent hours perfecting was destroyed in seconds. Pieces of blue silk fell to the floor like dead butterflies.

"No!" Elizabeth screamed and lunged forward to try to save it, but her stepmother shoved her so hard she fell.

Her stepmother did not stop. She kept tearing and ripping until there was nothing left but scraps of ruined fabric scattered everywhere. Then she threw the last piece onto the floor and wiped her hands on her skirt like she was brushing dirt from her hands.

"There," her stepmother said with satisfaction. "Now you have nothing to wear to the coronation. Problem solved."

Before Elizabeth could react, her stepmother walked to the door and dragged in an enormous basket that Elizabeth had not seen before. It was overflowing with dirty laundry. The same sheets and tablecloths and curtains that Elizabeth had washed just this morning. Her stepmother must have thrown them in the dirt.

She dumped the basket on the floor with a heavy thud.

"All of this needs to be washed and hung to dry before midnight," her stepmother ordered in that cold voice. "And I will be checking your work. If even one piece is not perfectly clean, there will be consequences."

Elizabeth stared at the mountain of laundry and felt something inside her shatter. Her stepmother walked out without a word and slammed the door so hard the whole room shook.

Elizabeth looked at the clock and saw that the coronation was going to start in less than thirty minutes.

There was no possible way she could make it.

Even if she worked without stopping for a single second, it would take half the night or longer to wash and hang everything. And she had nothing to wear. The blue dress was completely destroyed and she had no other nice clothes except the torn gown she was wearing now.

She was not going to make it to the coronation. Damian would stand in front of the entire kingdom waiting for her and she would not be there. It would embarrass him and she didn't want to do anything that would jeopardize his coronation.

Elizabeth suddenly took a deep breath and stood up as straight as she could.

She was going to the coronation.

She didn't care what her stepmother said.

Damian promised to make her his Queen, and she was going to be standing in that great hall when he said her name. Elizabeth immediately turned toward the door. Her hands were shaking and her heart was pounding, but her mind was made up.

She was going to the coronation.

And she was going to make her stepmother pay when she finally became the Queen.
