Chapter 3

A week had passed since the bedroom takeover, and I found myself standing in the doorway of what used to be my dining room. The space had been transformed beyond recognition. The warm mahogany furniture that had hosted countless Sterling family dinners was gone, replaced by a sleek glass table and chrome chairs that reflected the cold afternoon light. Natalie had redecorated with clinical efficiency, erasing every trace of my taste and history.

She'd invited—no, commanded—the attendance of Michael's business associates and their wives for an elaborate dinner party. I hadn't been consulted about the guest list or menu. In fact, I'd only learned about it when the caterers arrived that morning.

"Victoria, there you are," Natalie's voice carried across the room with practiced sweetness. She wore a black dress that hugged her figure—one I recognized from my own closet. "Could you check if the wine is properly chilled? I'd hate for anything to be less than perfect tonight."

The other guests exchanged uncomfortable glances. My humiliation was public knowledge now, the subject of whispered conversations at charity galas and business lunches. Poor Victoria Sterling, they said, replaced in her own home.

I moved toward the kitchen, my fingers instinctively finding my family signet ring. The weight of it anchored me to reality as I felt myself starting to float away, disconnecting from this nightmare.

Dinner progressed with excruciating slowness. I sat at my own table like a ghost, watching Natalie play hostess with my china, my crystal, my life. Michael barely acknowledged my presence, his attention fixed on Natalie as she charmed the table.

"More wine?" she asked, standing to refill glasses. As she reached across the table toward Eleanor Croft, her arm swept deliberately over my mother's antique lace tablecloth—the one treasure I'd managed to rescue from the "donations" pile.

The bottle tilted. Dark red wine cascaded onto pristine white lace, spreading like blood.

"Oh!" Natalie's hand flew to her mouth in mock horror. "How clumsy of me!"

I lunged forward, grabbing my napkin to blot the stain. "This was my mother's," I said, my voice cracking. "It's over a hundred years old."

"It's just a tablecloth," Michael said dismissively. "We'll buy another."

Natalie's eyes met mine over the ruined fabric, her smile never reaching them. "Some things are irreplaceable, though, aren't they?"

The room tilted. Darkness crept in from the edges of my vision. I felt myself slipping away, retreating from the unbearable reality of my life.

I blinked, disoriented. Sunlight streamed through unfamiliar windows. I was sitting in a leather chair across from a large mahogany desk. A man watched me with concerned eyes—Arthur Vance, my family's longtime lawyer and trustee.

"Victoria?" His voice was gentle. "Are you with me?"

"I—" I looked down at my hands. They held a stack of legal documents I didn't remember requesting. "What am I doing here?"

Arthur's brow furrowed. "You called my office yesterday. Don't you remember? You wanted to review the Sterling family trust documents."

I shook my head, panic rising. Yesterday? The last thing I remembered was Natalie spilling wine on my mother's tablecloth. How had I gotten here? What day was it?

"This isn't the first time, is it?" Arthur asked quietly, leaning forward. "The memory lapses."

I twisted my signet ring, unable to meet his eyes. "It's been happening more frequently. I lose time. I find myself places with no memory of how I got there."

Arthur set aside the documents and removed his glasses. "Victoria, I've known you since you were a child. What's happening in that house?"

The floodgates opened. I told him everything—the affair, the public humiliation, the townhouse transfer, the systematic erasure of my existence. Arthur listened without interruption, his expression growing increasingly troubled.

When I finished, he reached for a different set of documents in his desk drawer. "There's something you need to understand about your position, Victoria. Something I believe Michael has deliberately kept from you."

He slid the papers across the desk. "The Sterling family trust has specific clauses regarding asset protection. That townhouse? It can't be transferred without the approval of the trust's primary beneficiary—you. The same applies to the majority of your family's holdings."

I stared at him, uncomprehending. "But Michael said—"

"Michael has been lying to you," Arthur said firmly. "The Sterling fortune isn't just your inheritance, Victoria. It's your power. And it's time you remembered that."

I felt something shift inside me—a door opening to a part of myself I'd locked away years ago. The Victoria who'd graduated top of her class at Harvard. The Victoria who'd been groomed from birth to lead one of Manhattan's most influential families.

Arthur's eyes narrowed as he studied my face. "Victoria? Are you alright?"

But I wasn't Victoria anymore. At least, not the Victoria who had entered his office.

"I'm fine," I heard myself say in a voice colder and more controlled than my own. "And I think it's time we reviewed exactly what belongs to me."

Arthur looked startled by my sudden transformation, but he nodded slowly. "Yes, I believe it is."

I smiled, feeling strength flow through me as I reached for the documents. Michael thought he'd married a trophy wife. He was about to discover he'd married a Sterling.
