Chapter 1

The emerald necklace felt cool against my skin as I adjusted it in the mirror, its green stones catching the light just as they had when Griffin first fastened it around my neck two years ago. Tonight was special—our third wedding anniversary—and I'd spent the entire day preparing.

"Perfect timing," I whispered to myself, smoothing down the front of my cream silk dress. The dinner table was set with our finest china, candles casting a warm glow across the Ramos mansion's dining room. The chef had prepared Griffin's favorite meal, and I'd hidden two plane tickets to Paris in my purse, a surprise getaway planned for the following week.

Three years of marriage deserved celebration. Three years of building a life together, supporting each other's dreams, creating what I thought was unshakeable love.

I checked my watch—7:30 PM. Griffin was late.

The sound of tires on gravel made my heart leap. I hurried to the foyer, smoothing my hair and practicing the smile I'd been saving all day.

"Griffin! There you are!" I called out as the front door opened.

He stepped inside, his tall frame silhouetted against the evening light. His suit was immaculate as always, but something in his posture seemed off—rigid, distant.

"You're home," he said, not quite a question, not quite a greeting. His eyes barely met mine before sliding away to focus on loosening his tie.

"I've made dinner," I said, stepping closer. "Do you remember what today is?"

He paused, then nodded curtly. "Of course."

The coldness in his voice made me falter. This wasn't the passionate man who had pursued me relentlessly, who had promised to love me forever on our wedding day.

"It's our anniversary," I said softly, reaching for him. "I thought we could—"

"I know what it is, Violet." He stiffened as I touched his arm, pulling away almost imperceptibly. "I've had a difficult day. The merger talks are... complicated."

Something in his eyes—guilt? irritation?—made my stomach tighten. "I understand. That's why I thought tonight could be special. Just us."

He nodded again, more distracted this time. "I need a drink first. Give me a minute."

I watched him walk to the bar cart in the living room, pouring himself a generous whiskey without offering me anything. The carefully prepared dinner grew cold as he disappeared into his study, the door closing firmly behind him.

---

The sound of the doorbell startled me from my thoughts. I'd been mechanically clearing the untouched plates, my anniversary surprise tickets still hidden in my purse.

"Coming!" I called, wiping my hands on a napkin.

When I opened the door, my breath caught in my throat.

Nadia Porter stood on the threshold, her hand resting protectively on her visibly pregnant belly. My best friend since college, the woman who had been my maid of honor, who knew every secret I'd ever shared.

"Nadia?" My voice sounded strange to my own ears. "What are you—"

"Hello, Violet." Her smile was cold, triumphant. Without waiting for an invitation, she stepped past me into the foyer, her movements deliberate and confident.

"I think it's time we talked," she said, placing both hands on her swollen abdomen. "This is Griffin's child."

The world tilted beneath my feet. "What?"

"His child," she repeated, her eyes glittering with something between malice and satisfaction. "I'm four months along, and I'm tired of hiding. It's time you stepped aside so the real family can be together."

Four months. While I'd been planning anniversary dinners and surprise vacations, my husband had been...

"Nadia, please," I whispered, my mind racing to process this betrayal. "How could you—"

Before she could answer, another voice interrupted from behind her.

"Violet, darling. We need to talk."

Grandma Ramos stood in the doorway, her elegant frame silhouetted against the evening light. She didn't look surprised by Nadia's presence or announcement. In fact, she looked expectant, as if she'd been waiting for this moment.

The elderly matriarch stepped inside, closing the door behind her with a soft click that somehow sounded final.

"Grandma," I managed, my voice barely audible. "Did you know about this?"

She took my trembling hands in hers, her grip surprisingly firm. "Darling Violet, marriages face challenges. The important thing is preserving our family's unity."

I stared at her in disbelief as she continued, her voice smooth and practiced.

"Griffin needs you to be understanding about this situation. The child will need a stable home, and you've always been such a good daughter-in-law."

The words hit me like physical blows. Not condemnation of Griffin's betrayal. Not sympathy for my pain. Just expectation that I would accept this... this humiliation.

"You want me to..." I couldn't finish the sentence.

"To be strong," Grandma Ramos said firmly. "For the family."

Something broke inside me then—the last thread of hope that someone would defend me, protect me from this coordinated attack on my heart.

I pulled my hands free from Grandma Ramos's grasp and ran past them both, grabbing my keys from the hall table. Their voices called after me as I fled through the front door, tears blurring my vision as I stumbled to my car.

The engine roared to life just as the first raindrops began to fall, matching the storm already raging inside me.
