While I Was Fighting For My Life, He Chose Her Novel Cover

While I Was Fighting For My Life, He Chose Her

Lena nearly died on an operating table while her billionaire husband, Ethan Ashford, dined with another woman blocks away. His office confirmed the emergency call—and he ignored it. She survived the surgery, but the docile wife he married did not. Beneath three years of quiet sacrifice lay a buried identity: Lena Jeon, a name that moves markets and opens doors money cannot touch. The Cole family, led by the predatory Vivienne Cole, built an empire-level conspiracy around her, using Ethan as their pawn. They believed she was too broken to fight back. They were wrong. Now Lena walks into her husband's office, her enemies' scheme already fracturing. Ethan finally asks the question three years too late: Who are you? The answer will shatter everything.

Chapter 3

It rang four times before he answered.

Lena had been counting but there was no nervousness in her counting-she was just counting, like the way she counted things she wanted to get through when she needed to remain calm: the number of steps between the rooms, the number of seconds between lightning and thunder, the number of times he'd spoken her name to her in three years and had not actually looked her in the eye when he'd done so. Counting was for the brain when it just refused to sit still.

"I was expecting you to call," the voice said, a silken drone that implied surprise.

Daniel Yun's voice had not changed in three years; low, and controlled, and in possession of that exact cadence that signalled a man who had discovered in his early life that quiet speech drew a room in.

Lena had worked next to Daniel Yun for six years before she'd fled; during that time she had witnessed him rise from nothing into arguably the quietest and most terrifying man in the country. It was not the sort of terrifying that brought magazine covers but the sort of terrifying that other people of great influence uttered only in hushed tones, with a deferential admiration for entities capable of reconfiguring the world without sound.

"Daniel," she said.

"Lena." He paused. She heard him shifting, the soft click of a door somewhere at his end of the line. The sound of his world fading from view behind it. "I heard you were in the hospital. Are you okay?"

She didn't ask how he knew. Daniel Yun had ears that could hear through walls, in ways that would have astounded any number of people, and none of the ones who counted. 'I am fine. They are releasing me tomorrow morning.'

'Good.' That was Daniel all right. Short and uncomplicated; he had never been the kind of man to lace his sympathy with extraneous verbiage. 'So, is this a social call of some kind, or has one last thing cracked?'

Sera was examining her phone on the far side of the room, which of course, meant that she was listening intently, while trying not to look like she was, which Lena had always loved about her; at least she tried, at least she attempted, with all her might, the appearance of discretion.

'Something has finally cracked.' Lena said.

There was another pause. Briefer this time. 'What do you need?'

That was Daniel, that was the Daniel she had missed and buried, refused to consider for three years; he didn't waste words when the scenario already painted itself. He didn't want a performance of woundedness, nor a comprehensive account of suffering.

Daniel sized up and then he moved and when he finally had the picture, he was already three steps ahead of where anyone else stood trying to even draw the frame. Working with Daniel had, in the three years prior to Ethan, been the closest she had ever been to truly living at an intelligent high.

She had given all of that away. She had given away so much more.

"I want you to pull the Ashford Holdings acquisition files on Hargrove International," she instructed. "The whole thing: financials, the makeup of the board, who the silent partners are. I need to know what Ethan is actually purchasing and who he is actually purchasing it from."

The silence from Daniel's end was fleeting but dense. She knew that silence. That was the sound of him recalibrating, updating whatever mental image of her he'd been carrying around for the last three years, adjusting it for the version of her that he was currently talking to, which was neither the version of her that had exited her life with quiet dignity to become another person's wife, nor anything like her.

"The Cole family has a vested interest in Hargrove," he stated. Not asked.

"Marcus Cole is on the board, yes."

"Vivienne Cole was photographed with your husband last night."

"Yes as well."

"Lena," his voice shifted. It was neither softer nor louder; it was sharper, more direct, as it always did when he stopped talking to the professional and started talking to the person. "If the Cole family has a stake in this acquisition, and your husband is executing that acquisition in the morning, you're not talking about a difficult marriage; you're talking about an executed strategy that has been developing over time."

She knew that. She knew that in the same way you know that the room you are in is cold without going over to the thermometer and confirming it with a reading, because you do not want to have to do something about how cold it is. "I know."

"How long?"

"A good while." She stared at the roses on her windowsill, still beautiful and still unyielding. "Will you pull the files?"

"They will be on your secure drive by tonight." A pause. "There is something else you need to know, and I need you to hear it from me before you hear it anywhere else." Something in his tone made Sera look up from across the room, because you can hear a tone even through the telephone pressed to someone else's ear. "There has been some activity on your father's estate."

The room fell very quiet.

Or, more precisely, the room remained exactly where it was, the hospital hummed along in the hall, the morning light didn't move, Sera continued breathing without interruption, but everything inside of Lena was so very still that its surroundings were raucous.

"What kind of activity?" she said, her voice smooth as glass. The perfect evenness it cost her more than anything she'd said in two days.

"Somebody has been quietly litigating the trust structure-lodging challenges through an entity that acts on behalf of a third party, not publicly visible yet, but the filings exist if you know to look. The challenge has been in the works for approximately eight months, from the look of it." He let that hang there.

"Eight months ago was roughly the time Ashford Holdings first contacted Hargrove International."

Lena closed her eyes. Eight months. All the time that she had been in that house, in that marriage, letting herself be flattened and seeing Ethan late, and telling herself that she was being rational, that whatever it was that had been eroding the ground beneath her feet had not actually shaken her and there had been no tremor.

She felt the tremor then. She just hadn't let herself say what it was.

"What third-party entity?" she asked.

"A shell company registered in the Cayman Islands. Clean. But the registered agent can be traced back to a law firm that has been involved with the Cole family for the past eleven years."

There it was.

Vivienne Cole was not just having dinner with her husband; she was never just having dinner. The dinner was a piece on the surface of things and Lena felt the full shape of it land in her mind not in a single blast but in a wave of cold that seeps and fills every available cavity and crevice and she understood fully what it was doing to her and it arrived in its totality and that it all finally hit together:

I was the target. I was not collateral. I was not an inconvenience. I was the objective and it was carried out with explicit awareness of my existence and what I would inherit and what would become of the assets comprising an empire should the terms of my father's trust be successfully circumvented with me thoroughly occupied inside a marriage specifically conceived, at least in some part, to Occupy me.

"Daniel." Her voice was eerily calm. She could feel Sera watching her now, blatant in her gaze. "I need you to do one more thing."

"Anything."

"I need you to begin making calls. Silently. Anyone that knew my father, that understood what the Jeon portfolio actually was, I want them to know I'm back. Not public. Not quite yet. I want the rumor to filter through the proper channels. Can you do that?"

The silence that followed this was not a pause, but something else entirely. It was the silence of a man that had been waiting three years for a specific sentence, and now was taking a precisely one-second moment to personally register that it had finally been uttered.

"I can do that." Daniel's voice was rough, but steady. "Welcome back, Lena."

She ended the call.

The air in the room finally felt steady around her. Sera placed her cell phone back on the chair correctly this time, abandoning any pretense, and looked at her friend, with an expression of awestruck dread that hadn't diminished from when he had been a young man years prior.

"The Jeon portfolio." Sera spoke softly, no question to it at all, merely stating a forbidden name that seemed foreign in her mouth after such a long lapse of usage.

"Don't." Lena's response was quiet and mild.

"You haven't told him. Ethan doesn't know."

"No."

"Three years, Lena. Three years since he married you, and he doesn't know you are..."

"He married Lena Ashford." She looked her friend squarely in the eyes. "He doesn't know about Lena Jeon."

Sera compressed her lips. Outside, a cart jingled by in the corridor. A telephone somewhere rang twice and fell silent. The white roses on the windowsill sat undisturbed, their beauty remote, inanimate.

"The Cole family knows." Sera's voice was low. "That's what you're telling me. They discovered the trust, have been making their moves on it, and Vivienne. Oh my God." Sera pressed a hand to her eyes and passed it down her face. "She deliberately moved in on Ethan."

"That's what I believe."

"So, what do we do?"

Lena reached forward and delicately plucked one white rose from the vase. She turned it over in her fingers. There was a thorn on the stem which the florist had failed to trim, sharp enough to be that you might have missed it if you weren't paying attention. She pressed her thumb on it. Just slightly. Just enough to know that it was there.

"Let them think that they are winning," she said. " For just a little while longer."

She placed the rose on her bedside table by her cell phone. (thorn upward), and then rested her head back against the pillow and the morning sun illuminated her face and for the first time since she woke up in this room, her expression look less like a recovering woman and more like a woman who just figured out exactly where to start.
