Chapter 4

The waiting room at Mount Sinai was quiet. It smelled of lemon bleach and rubbed alcohol.

I sat in a vinyl chair, waiting for my blood work.

On the glass coffee table lay a fresh copy of *Vogue*.

The cover caught my eye immediately. It was Rhett and Milani.

They stood together on a marble balcony overlooking Central Park. Rhett wore a bespoke navy suit, his hand resting firmly on Milani’s hip. Milani wore a flowing blush silk gown that hugged her rounded stomach. She was glowing. Visibly, beautifully pregnant.

The headline stretched across the bottom in crisp gold font: *Manhattan’s New Power Couple.*

I picked it up with a numb hand. My fingers left faint smudges on the glossy paper.

I flipped to the feature. The spread was six pages long. There were photos of them in Rhett’s penthouse, photos of them at galas, and photos of baby clothes laid out in a sunlit nursery.

My eyes scanned the text until I hit the middle paragraph.

*Taylor’s estranged first wife, Lorelei Williamson, remains out of the public eye following a private break from society.*

One sentence. That was all I was. A footnote. An inconvenient detail packed away in a dark drawer.

Footsteps squeaked on the linoleum. A young nurse hurried over. She saw the magazine in my hands, and her face went pale.

"Oh, Lorelei," she said in a rush. She quickly reached down and took the issue off my lap. "I'm so sorry. Someone must have left that here by mistake. I’ll throw it out."

I looked up at her and offered a faint, tired smile. "It's fine, Sarah. I already saw it."

She looked like she wanted to cry for me. I didn't want anyone's pity. I just leaned my head back against the wall and waited for my name to be called.

Two nights later, Milani took the stage at Carnegie Hall.

It was a black-tie benefit concert for the city’s arts foundation. It was the exact recital I had prepared for three years ago. The exact program. Ravel’s *Gaspard de la Nuit*.

I didn't buy a ticket. I sat on my living room sofa in the dark, listening to the live broadcast on the public classical station.

Her playing was technically clean. She had practiced hard. But she rushed through the phrasing, and her left hand faltered slightly during the rapid arpeggios of *Ondine*. She lacked the nuance my mother had spent years teaching me.

Still, the crowd didn’t care about nuance. They cared about the narrative.

When the final chord faded, the radio speakers filled with thunderous applause. A standing ovation.

The host’s voice came on, breathless. "A stunning debut from New York's brightest rising star, Milani Fisher."

I turned the dial. The room went silent.

Later, Petra Voss posted photos from backstage on social media. In the picture, Milani held up the thick, glossy Carnegie Hall program with both hands. Her cheeks were flushed. Her smile was blinding.

Right there on the cover, printed in heavy black ink, was her name.

It was printed where mine had belonged.

She had posted a caption: *Proof that dreams come true when you work for them.*

She was going to frame that program. She was going to hang it in her foyer. She had told herself the lie so many times that she actually believed it. She truly thought she had earned that stage on her own.

Around two in the morning, the chemo nausea hit me hard.

My stomach twisted into knots. I knelt by the toilet, dry-heaving until my ribs ached. When the spasms finally passed, I sat on the cold bathroom tile, shivering under my flannel robe.

I couldn't sleep. The silence in the apartment felt too heavy.

I stood up, walked into the hallway, and opened the guest room closet. On the top shelf sat a dusty cardboard box. I hadn’t touched it in three years.

It held my mother’s personal effects. The things retrieved from the car after the crash.

I pulled it down and carried it to my bed.

The box smelled of lavender and cedar. Inside were old notebooks, silk scarves, and a stack of Manila envelopes. At the bottom lay a leather-bound folder.

I opened it.

Inside were unsent letters, written in my mother’s elegant handwriting. Beside them were carbon copies of legal amendments to the Williamson family trust.

My breath caught in my throat.

The date on the legal document was two months before the accident. My mother had gone behind my back. She had created an airtight firewall around our core capital. She had specifically drafted a clause stating that no marital partner could claim ownership or leverage family holdings if they "married into this family under circumstances I do not trust."

She had known.

She had seen Rhett’s hunger from the very first dinner. She saw past the polished manners and the charming smile. She knew he was a man who took, not a man who loved.

Under the papers, I found her old flip phone. The battery was almost dead, but it still held a charge.

I opened the saved voicemails. There was only one.

I pressed play and held the speaker to my ear.

My mother’s voice filled the dark room, clear, warm, and calm.

"I love you, darling," she said softly. The recording crackled with road noise. "I just want you to be sure you know the difference between a man who loves you and a man who needs you. They feel the same from the inside until they don't."

The line clicked off.

I closed the phone. I didn't cry. My eyes were dry, burning with a cold, sharp clarity.

Rhett had spent years thinking he had stripped me of everything. He thought he had outsmarted my family. He thought he was a king.

He was just a thief standing on borrowed ground.

I sat by the window until the sky turned pale blue over the skyline. At seven sharp, I picked up my phone and dialed Marcus Vance.

He answered on the second ring. "Lorelei?"

"Good morning, Marcus," I said, my voice steady and completely calm. "I have the trust documents my mother amended. Call Dallas. It's time to pull the trigger."
