Chapter 3

The driver's name is Paul. He's been with the family for six years. He opens doors. He doesn't speak unless spoken to. He watches me in the rearview mirror like I'm made of glass.

Marcus assigned him three days after the vase incident. "For your safety," he said. "You're still recovering."

I smiled. I thanked him. I said I felt so much better knowing someone was looking out for me.

Paul drives me to Central Park on Tuesday. To a café on Madison on Wednesday. To a bookstore on Lexington on Thursday. I buy novels I don't read. I sit on benches and feed pigeons. I establish a pattern.

On Friday, I ask Paul to take me back to the bookstore.

"Of course, Miss Howard." He holds the door.

The bookstore is three stories, all dark wood and leather chairs. I wander the fiction section for twenty minutes. Paul waits by the front entrance, hands clasped behind his back.

I take the stairs to the second floor. Philosophy. History. A rear exit marked EMERGENCY ONLY.

I push through it.

No alarm sounds.

The alley smells like garbage and rain. I walk two blocks north, hail a cab, and give the driver an address in Midtown.

The bank is old money. Brass fixtures. Marble floors. A receptionist who looks like she's never smiled in her life.

"I'm here about a safe-deposit box," I say. "Joseph Dunn."

She types something. Pauses. Looks up at me with new eyes.

"One moment, Miss Howard."

She makes a phone call. Two minutes later, a man in a gray suit appears. He's seventy, maybe older. Silver hair. Kind eyes.

"Miss Howard." He extends his hand. "Patrick Dunn. Your grandfather's estate attorney."

I shake his hand. His grip is warm.

"I've been waiting for you," he says quietly.

He leads me downstairs. The vault is all steel and silence. He unlocks a private room, gestures me inside.

"I'll give you privacy," he says. "Take all the time you need."

The door closes.

The box sits on the table. Brushed steel. Twelve inches long. The key is already in the lock.

I turn it.

Inside: a stack of folders. A flash drive. A small cassette recorder. An envelope with my name in my grandfather's handwriting.

I open the first folder.

Howard Group Corporate Restructuring — Confidential.

Marcus's signature at the bottom of every page. Three subsidiaries transferred to a private LLC. Date: four months after my accident. Witness signatures: Matteo Collins. Dr. Gabriel Gonzales.

I flip to the next document.

Payment records. A wire transfer to a company called Apex Auto Services. $150,000. Memo line: Consultation fee. Date: one week before my accident.

I open the second folder.

Photographs. The wreckage of my car. Close-ups of the driver's side airbag housing. A mechanic's report with sections highlighted in yellow: "Deployment mechanism manually disabled. Deliberate tampering."

My hands don't shake. They should. They don't.

I pick up the cassette recorder. Press play.

Matteo's voice fills the small room.

"The airbag needs to fail on her side. That's the critical piece. If it deploys, she walks away."

Marcus: "And the driver?"

Matteo: "He's already paid. He'll take the settlement and disappear."

Marcus: "What about the girl?"

Matteo: "Ailani? She doesn't know. She doesn't need to know."

A pause.

Marcus: "And if Bellamy survives?"

Matteo: "She won't be the same. That's enough."

The recording ends.

I sit in the chair. I don't move. I count my breaths. One. Two. Three.

I pick up the envelope.

The paper is thick. Expensive. My name in black ink.

I open it.

*Bellamy,*

*If you're reading this, they've shown you who they really are.*

*I never trusted Marcus. I tried to tell your mother, but she wouldn't listen. So I did what I could. I gathered proof. I built you a case. I made sure you'd have what you need when the time came.*

*You're stronger than all of them. You always have been. That's why they're afraid of you.*

*Fight back, my girl.*

*Don't let them win.*

*I love you. I always will.*

I fold the letter. I put it back in the envelope. I place it on top of the folders.

I sit in the vault for eleven minutes.

I don't cry.

I don't scream.

I just sit.

Then I stand. I pack everything into my bag. I walk out of the vault, past Patrick Dunn, who hands me his business card without a word.

"When you're ready," he says.

I nod.

I take a cab back to the bookstore. I buy three novels. I walk out the front entrance.

Paul is waiting by the car, looking mildly concerned.

"I'm so sorry," I say. "I got lost in the stacks."

"No trouble, Miss Howard." He opens the door.

I slide into the back seat. I clutch my bag against my chest.

Paul drives me home.

I smile at the doorman. I take the elevator to the forty-second floor. I walk into my bedroom and lock the door.

I open my grandfather's notebook.

I write the date.

I write: *He loved me. He knew. He left me everything.*

I write: *Now I know too.*

I write: *Now I fight back.*
