Chapter 1

I found the texts on a Tuesday.

Camden was in the shower. Steam curled out from under the bathroom door, and I could hear him humming something tuneless through the rush of water. We were supposed to meet Jonathan and his colleagues for dinner at seven, and I needed to check the reservation time. My phone was dead on the kitchen counter. Camden's sat face-up on the nightstand, unlocked.

I picked it up. Opened his messages. Scrolled past faculty listservs and a thread with his department chair.

Then I saw it.

A contact saved as just "M."

The preview line read: *Can't stop thinking about last night.*

I tapped it before I could stop myself.

The thread loaded. My eyes caught fragments. *You're different with me. More yourself.* And then, from Camden: *She doesn't understand this part of my life. You do.*

My hands went cold.

"Alaya?" Camden's voice cut through the white noise in my head. "Can you grab my phone? I need to check something."

I set it down on the nightstand. Face-up. Exactly where I'd found it.

"It's here," I called back.

I walked out of the bedroom. Down the hall. Into the kitchen. I stood at the sink and gripped the edge of the counter until my knuckles turned white.

At dinner, I watched his hands. The way he turned his wine glass. The way he checked his phone twice under the table and smiled at something on the screen before setting it face-down. The way he touched my shoulder when we left the restaurant, warm and familiar, like nothing had changed.

Jonathan caught my eye across the table once. His expression didn't shift, but I knew he saw something.

I said I had a headache on the drive home. Camden nodded and turned up the radio.

---

The next morning, Camden left for campus at eight. I waited until his car pulled out of the parking garage. Then I went to his desk.

I told myself I was looking for the faculty parking pass I needed to borrow. That was true. But my hands were shaking when I opened the top drawer.

Student papers. A folder of conference notes. A half-empty box of business cards.

I pulled the stack of papers out and set them on the desk.

Underneath, folded once, was a receipt.

Tiffany & Co.

Custom Engraving: Bracelet.

Amount: $1,847.00.

Date: Six weeks ago.

I unfolded it slowly. At the bottom, in small print, the engraving text was listed.

*For M — every brilliant thing. C.*

I sat down in Camden's chair. The leather was still warm from where he'd been sitting an hour ago, reviewing a manuscript before he left. I stared at the receipt. Read it again. And again.

Six weeks ago, I'd been in the middle of my second round of fertility treatments. I'd been nauseous and exhausted, and Camden had brought me soup one night and kissed my forehead and told me he was proud of how strong I was.

I folded the receipt back up. Put the papers back exactly how I'd found them. Closed the drawer.

I walked into the living room and sat on the couch. I didn't move for a long time.

---

That evening, I made pasta. Camden came home late, carrying a stack of student essays and a paper bag with a bottle of wine.

"Rough day?" he asked, kissing the top of my head.

"Not too bad," I said. I stirred the sauce. "I heard Tiffany has a new collection out. Did you see it?"

I didn't look at him. I kept my eyes on the pan.

"Tiffany?" His voice was easy. Unbothered. "Oh, yeah. I ordered something a while back. Retirement gift for Professor Lindgren. Forgot to mention it. Why?"

I nodded slowly. "Just curious."

He opened the wine. Poured two glasses. Set one beside me on the counter.

"How was your prenatal appointment yesterday?" he asked. "I'm sorry I couldn't make it."

"It was fine," I said. "Everything's on track."

He smiled. Kissed my temple. "Good. I'm glad."

I watched him walk into the living room, phone in hand, already scrolling.

I opened the notes app on my phone. Started a new file. Typed the date. Typed: *Tiffany receipt. "M." Professor Lindgren retired two years ago.*

I saved it. Locked my phone. Finished making dinner.

---

Three days later, I got a text from a number I didn't recognize.

*Hi Alaya, this is Meilani Castro from Camden's department. I was hoping we could meet for coffee this week. There are some rumors going around that I think we should clear up before they get out of hand. Would you have time to talk? I promise it won't take long.*

I read it three times.

Then I typed one word.

*When?*

---

The café was two blocks from the NYU campus. Meilani was already there when I arrived, sitting at a corner table with her hands folded neatly in front of her.

She was younger than I'd expected. Eighteen, maybe nineteen. Dark hair pulled back in a low ponytail. A fitted sweater. And on her left wrist, catching the light from the window, was the bracelet.

Custom engraved. Delicate. Unmistakable.

She stood when she saw me. Smiled. "Alaya. Thank you so much for coming."

I sat down across from her. Ordered a coffee I knew I wouldn't drink.

Meilani didn't waste time.

"I wanted to talk to you directly," she said, her voice calm and measured, "because I think you deserve to know the truth. Camden and I have been seeing each other for a few months now. I didn't want it to be a secret anymore."

She pulled out her phone. Turned it toward me.

Screenshots. Text threads. Camden's name at the top.

*I can't stop thinking about you.*

*She doesn't understand me the way you do.*

*You're the only person who sees the real me.*

I didn't touch the phone. I just looked.

Meilani kept talking. "He's been trying to figure out how to have this conversation with you for a while. He didn't want to hurt you. But I think you deserve better than a marriage held together by obligation."

She leaned forward slightly. Her expression was kind. Sympathetic.

"We're flying to Chicago this weekend," she said softly. "For a concert. He's been looking forward to it."

My coffee arrived. I didn't pick it up.

Meilani tilted her head. "I know this is hard. But I think, in the long run, you'll be glad you know."

I stood up. My chair scraped against the floor.

"Thank you for your time," I said.

I walked out of the café. Down the block. Around the corner.

I stopped against the side of a building. Pressed both palms flat against the cold stone. My chest was tight. My hands wouldn't stop shaking.

I stood there until they did.
