Everything she believed about their love now hangs on a night that was supposed to be perfect.

While I Lost Our Baby, He Chose Her Chapter 1

The ivory silk dress hung against the bedroom door. Tomorrow night was our engagement party.

I smoothed the fabric with the steamer. Steam hissed into the quiet air of our Upper West Side apartment. On the dining table, fifty place cards were stacked in neat piles. I had hand-lettered every single one in gold ink. Next to them was the final catering invoice, checked and paid.

Seven years with Maverick Cole, and tomorrow we were finally making it official.

My phone buzzed on the kitchen island.

I set the steamer down and walked over. The screen showed an Instagram direct message. It came from an account with zero followers, no profile picture, and a string of random numbers for a handle.

I opened it.

There were dozens of images. Screenshots.

I clicked the first one. It was a text exchange between Maverick and Violeta Fisher, his junior research partner at Columbia.

*Maverick: Your draft is brilliant, V. Dinner tomorrow to celebrate? Just us.*

*Violeta: Only if you promise not to look at your watch every ten minutes.*

*Maverick: For you? Never.*

My stomach gave a sharp, sickening drop.

I swiped to the next image. FaceTime call logs from midnight, one in the morning, two in the morning. Photos of them sitting close at an Italian restaurant downtown, her head tilted toward his shoulder, laughing.

Then I hit the last screenshot.

The timestamp caught my eye first. October 14, three years ago. 2:47 AM.

*Maverick: Don’t cry, V. I’m here. I’m not going anywhere.*

My lungs seized. Air refused to enter my chest.

October 14.

That was the night I lost our baby. I had been eleven weeks pregnant, curled in a ball on our bathroom floor, bleeding onto the cold tile. I had called Maverick five times. He never picked up. When he finally walked through the door at seven the next morning, he smelled like burnt office coffee. He told me he had lost track of time fixing a server crash in the lab.

He hadn’t been fixing a server. He had been with her.

I read the message again. Then a third time.

My hands stopped shaking. A bizarre, icy stillness rushed through my veins. I didn’t scream. I didn’t cry.

I set the phone face-down on the counter.

I walked to the stove, filled the kettle, and turned on the burner. The water took three minutes to boil. I poured it over a bag of peppermint tea, watching the water turn pale green.

The front door clicked open.

Maverick stepped into the foyer. He wore his heavy wool coat, his Columbia faculty lanyard hanging from his pocket. He looked exhausted, handsome, and completely untouchable.

"The wind off the Hudson is brutal," he said, kicking off his oxfords. He didn't look at me. He dropped his leather briefcase by the console.

"Maverick," I said.

My voice was quiet, but it cut through the room.

He paused, loosening his tie. "Yeah? Is dinner ready? I have to review two grant proposals before midnight."

"Who is Violeta Fisher?"

His fingers froze on his silk tie for half a second. Then his jaw tightened. He hung his coat in the closet, taking his time.

"She’s my research associate," he said smoothly. "You know that, Leanna. Why are you asking?"

"Someone sent me screenshots of your messages." I kept my hands flat on the wooden table. "Texts. Call logs at two in the morning. Dinners."

Maverick walked into the kitchen, grabbed a glass from the cupboard, and filled it from the tap. He drank it down, his expression completely blank.

"You're being paranoid," he said, setting the glass in the sink with a dull clink. "Violeta had a rough semester. Her father was sick. I was mentoring her. You're taking fragments of professional support completely out of context."

"At two in the morning?" I asked. "On October fourteenth?"

He frowned. "What does a random date have to do with anything?"

He didn't even remember.

The worst night of my life was just a random date to him.

He crossed his arms and sighed. It was the same impatient sigh he used on slow students. "Look, Leanna, I didn't want to bring this up before the party, but we might as well get it out of the way. I accepted the transatlantic fellowship."

I looked at him. "London?"

"Imperial College," he said, his tone matter-of-fact, like he was reading an email. "It starts next month. Eight months abroad."

"And us?" I asked. "The wedding? Our life here?"

"The fellowship is a career milestone," he said, not blinking. "Violeta is listed as my primary research fellow. She’s coming with me to run the computational models. As for you, someone needs to stay in New York. My mother needs daily dialysis, and you know how she hates home nurses. It makes the most sense."

He spoke with total detachment. He hadn’t forgotten to invite me. He had simply categorized me. Violeta belonged to his future. I belonged to his domestic chores.

The gold-lettered engagement cards sat between us on the counter. They looked like garbage now.

"Right," I whispered.

"Don't make a scene out of this," he warned, picking up his laptop bag. "We have fifty people coming tomorrow night. Pull yourself together."

He walked down the hall and shut the door to his study.

The apartment went dead silent.

I didn't move for ten minutes. Then I walked over to the desk by the window and pulled out my small black notebook. For years, I had used it to track Linda’s medication doses, dialysis appointments, and grocery budgets.

I turned to a blank page.

I wrote down the date: *October 14, 2:47 AM.*

Next to it, I wrote: *Violeta.*

Then I began writing down the other dates. The birthdays he spent at "conferences." The faculty dinners he told me spouses weren't invited to. The timestamps from the screenshots.

My handwriting was small, sharp, and steady.

I wrote until three in the morning. No tears came. The blind, desperate girl who loved him had died hours ago on the kitchen floor.

All that remained was the record. And a plan.
