Chapter 3

Four days passed. The house was quiet.

I carried a basket of freshly folded sheets down the main hallway. The air smelled of lemon oil and expensive cedar. I walked on the thick runner rug, making no sound in my flat shoes.

As I passed the study, the heavy double doors were open a crack.

A voice drifted out.

It was Dariel. But it wasn't the slow, gentle voice of "Danny." This voice was sharp and flat. It sounded cold, like steel scraping over glass.

"We can't push the date back," Dariel said. "I have board meetings all through next month. If we do this, it has to be quiet."

I stopped. My breath hitched. I lowered the laundry basket to the carpet, pressing myself against the wall.

Nylah spoke next. Her tone was smooth, like she was discussing the weather.

"We don't have a choice, Dariel," she said. Ice clinked against glass. "Azari’s creatinine levels spiked again this morning. Her body is rejecting the first transplant. The nephrologist says the tissue is failing. We need to move within the quarter."

"What's the surgical timeline?" Dariel asked.

"Six weeks," Nylah said. "Dr. Chu's replacement is already lined up at the private clinic in Jersey. The surgical suite is booked. The team is on retainer. We just need to bring the donor in."

*The donor.*

The word hung in the cold air.

"Is the donor strong enough?" Dariel asked. There was no hesitation in his voice. No tremble. Just business.

"Lily is fine," Nylah replied. "Kara keeps her fed. Her vitals are steady. Her right kidney is healthy enough to take. Azari will make a full recovery this time."

The hallway seemed to tilt beneath my feet.

The floor vanished. The ceiling spun.

I clamped both hands over my mouth. My teeth sank deep into the meat of my palm. I bit down until the taste of hot copper filled my tongue, biting harder and harder to trap the scream ripping up my throat.

Three years ago.

The cold clinic waiting room. The smell of bleach. Danny holding my trembling hand for six hours, whispering prayers with tears in his eyes while our three-year-old baby was on the operating table.

*“It was an emergency, Kara,”* he had told me back then. *“Her left kidney failed. They had to take it out to save her life.”*

It hadn't failed.

They had cut into my healthy baby girl. They had cracked open her tiny body, sliced out her living flesh, and handed it to Azari. And I had sat in the lobby, thanking God that Danny was there to hold me.

Now, Azari’s body was rejecting it.

And they were coming back for the last one. If they took Lily’s right kidney, she would die. They knew that. They simply didn't care.

"I'll handle the transport," Dariel said from inside the room. "Tell the clinic I want the paperwork scrubbed again. No digital records. Just like last time."

"Already done," Nylah said.

I didn't faint. I didn't cry.

Something inside me turned to pure stone. I took my hands off my bloody palm. I picked up the laundry basket and walked back to the servant’s room, one steady step at a time.

Once the door was shut, I locked it.

I pulled the shoebox from under the bed. I lifted out Lily’s drawings—the bright green trees, the crooked houses, the little stick-figure family she used to draw. Beneath the crayons lay my small spiral notebook and the faded discharge papers from three years ago.

My hands did not shake.

I pulled out my phone. I found the number for Dr. Raymond Chu’s clinic, listed on Lily’s old post-op discharge sheet. I dialed it.

"Saint Jude Pediatric Surgical Center," a receptionist answered.

"Hello," I said, keeping my voice sweet and calm. "I'm looking for Dr. Raymond Chu. I need my daughter's post-op records transferred."

A pause on the line. The sound of keys clicking.

"Dr. Chu no longer practices here, ma'am," the woman said. "He left abruptly three years ago."

"Do you have a forwarding clinic? Or a new practice number?"

"No," she said, sounding uneasy. "He gave up his New York license and relocated out of state. Nevada, I believe. There are no forwarding referrals in the file."

"I see," I whispered. "Thank you."

I hung up.

He didn't just move. He had fled. He took his payoff from Dariel and ran across the country to hide from what he had done to an infant.

I spread the old documents on the bed.

I flipped to the surgical consent form. It was dated May 12th, three years ago.

At the bottom was a signature line. *Parent/Legal Guardian: Kara Thompson.*

I stared at it. The letters were neat and rounded. The loops were tight.

It wasn't my handwriting. I write with a left-leaning slant. My *K* always has a sharp tail. Someone had forged my name while I sat out in the hall drinking lukewarm coffee.

I used my phone to photograph every single page.

The consent form. The forged signature. The vague surgical notes with no hospital case number. The name of the anesthesiologist who had signed off on the unmonitored anesthesia. The name of Dr. Vance, the high-end nephrologist who had signed the fake diagnosis letters that convinced me Lily was born sick.

I uploaded the photos to a hidden cloud drive. Then I wrote down every name in my notebook.

*Dariel Pierce. Nylah Garza. Dr. Raymond Chu. Dr. Vance.*

A chain of monsters.

I folded the original papers, tucked them back beneath Lily's drawings, and slid the box under the bed.

I stood up and looked in the cracked mirror over the small sink.

My eyes were completely clear. For eight years, I had been Danny’s quiet, grateful wife. I had let them make me small.

That woman was dead.

They wanted my daughter's life.

I was going to burn theirs to the ground.
