Chapter 5

The text came at eleven in the morning. *Family lunch today at 2pm. Ashton's business partners will be joining. —Oaklee*

I stared at the message. Checked the household calendar. Nothing was scheduled.

I called Ashton. It went to voicemail.

I texted back: *What time did you say?*

The reply came instantly. *2pm! See you then!*

I dressed carefully. Navy silk that accommodated my belly without announcing it. Simple jewelry. Hair pulled back. I looked like the woman I'd been pretending to be for five years.

I arrived at two-fifteen. The driveway was full—Lillian's car, the Caldwell brothers' matching sedans, Marcus Hale's black BMW.

The dining room was already seated when I reached the doorway.

Oaklee sat at the head of the table. My chair. The one I'd occupied at every family dinner since marrying into this house.

She wore cream—a soft knit dress that clung to her figure, her hand resting on her flat stomach like a promise. Ashton sat to her right. Lillian to her left. The Caldwell brothers and Marcus Hale filled the remaining seats.

Every head turned when I appeared.

'Sylvia!' Oaklee's voice was bright. Welcoming. 'We started without you—I thought you said two-thirty!'

I looked at Ashton. He was cutting his steak. He didn't look up.

'My mistake,' I said.

There was one empty chair. At the far end of the table. The seat usually reserved for staff during working lunches.

I walked to it and sat.

Oaklee leaned forward, her hand still on her stomach. 'I was just telling everyone about the nursery plans,' she said. 'Ashton and I are thinking of converting the east wing library. It gets the most beautiful morning light.'

The east wing library. Where I'd spent my entire pregnancy reading to my other children.

'That sounds lovely,' I said.

James Caldwell's wife smiled at Oaklee. 'How far along are you now?'

'Fourteen weeks.' Oaklee's voice carried. 'We're so grateful. After everything Ashton's been through—' She glanced at me, then away. 'Well. This feels like a new beginning.'

Lillian's fork paused halfway to her mouth. She set it down with precision. Her eyes moved from Oaklee to Ashton to me.

I cut my chicken into small pieces. Chewed. Swallowed.

Marcus Hale cleared his throat. 'The contracts for the Singapore expansion are ready for signature,' he said to Ashton. 'We should discuss timeline.'

The conversation shifted. Business. Safe ground.

I ate in silence. When the server offered wine, I covered my glass. When dessert came, I declined. When Oaklee laughed at something Ashton said—her hand finding his arm, her face tilted up toward him—I folded my napkin and set it beside my plate.

'Excuse me,' I said.

No one responded.

I stood and walked out.

Behind me, Oaklee's voice continued, bright and certain, claiming space that had never been offered.

I made it to the library before Lillian found me.

She closed the door behind her. Stood with her back to it. Her face was the controlled mask she wore in board meetings, but her right hand moved to her ring. Straightened it once. Twice.

'That,' she said, 'was a miscalculation.'

I looked at her.

'Not yours,' she clarified. 'His.'

She crossed to the window. Looked out at the garden where my children played under the nanny's supervision.

'There are contractual considerations,' she said. 'He doesn't understand what he's risking.'

'I know,' I said.

She turned. Studied me with the same precision she'd used to assess me five years ago, when she'd first made her offer.

'You've fulfilled every term,' she said quietly.

It wasn't a question.

'Yes.'

'And after?'

I pressed my thumbnail into my palm. 'After, I'm done.'

Something shifted in her expression. Not quite regret. Not quite recognition. Something closer to the moment a chess player realizes the board has already turned.

'I see,' she said.

She walked to the door. Paused with her hand on the knob.

'He doesn't deserve what you've given him,' she said. 'He never did.'

Then she left.

I stood at the window and watched my children. The eldest was building something with blocks. The four-year-old was singing. The two-year-old was running in circles, arms spread like wings.

The baby inside me kicked. Hard. Insistent.

I placed my hand over the spot and counted to ten.

That evening, Lillian pulled Ashton into his study. I heard their voices through the closed door as I passed with folded laundry.

'You're making a visible error in judgment,' Lillian said. Her voice was measured. Cold. 'There are contractual considerations you're not accounting for.'

'This is about image,' Ashton replied. 'I understand. But Oaklee's child changes everything. Sylvia was never really invested anyway.'

Silence.

Then Lillian's voice, quieter: 'You have no idea what she's invested.'

'Mother—'

'We're done here.'

The door opened. Lillian emerged. Saw me standing in the hallway with the laundry basket.

Our eyes met.

She walked past without a word.

I continued to the linen closet. Put the towels away. Closed the door.

My hands were steady.

Three days later, I sat in Dr. Voss's examination room for the final time. She measured. Checked. Confirmed.

'Baby's healthy,' she said. 'Positioned perfectly. You could go into labor anytime in the next forty-eight to seventy-two hours.'

She made notes in my chart. Then looked up.

'Do you have support arranged?' she asked. 'For the delivery?'

'Yes,' I said.

It was true. Keira was on standby. Had been for weeks.

Dr. Voss held my gaze for a moment. Then nodded.

'Good,' she said.

She walked me to the door. Shook my hand.

'You've been very brave,' she said quietly.

I didn't know how to respond to that.

So I just said, 'Thank you.'

That night, I sat at the kitchen table after everyone had gone to bed. I opened the fireproof box. Took out the contract.

I didn't need to read it. I knew every word. Every clause. Every condition I'd satisfied.

But I read it anyway.

When I finished, I folded it carefully. Put it back. Closed the box.

I pressed my thumbnail into my palm and let myself feel it. All of it. The five rounds of IVF. The three miscarriages. The four pregnancies. The years of silence. The woman I'd been before this started, and the woman I'd become.

I gave myself thirty seconds.

Then I closed my hand.

I went upstairs. Checked on my children. Kissed each of their foreheads while they slept.

In my room, I lay in the dark. The baby kicked. Steady. Insistent. Alive.

I placed both hands on my belly and whispered, 'Soon.'

I didn't sleep.

I didn't need to.

The finish line was close.
