Chapter 1

I used to love watching Ashton's hands. They were the first thing I noticed about him in that crowded University of Washington lecture hall—strong, elegant fingers that tapped against his notebook in a rhythm I somehow found comforting. Now, those same hands rested on the small of another woman's back, and I was watching them from across the restaurant we used to frequent together, my own hands folded over the swell of my nine-month pregnant belly.

The Emerald Room had been our place once. Ashton had proposed to me in the corner booth, back when his mother's contract still felt like a temporary sacrifice rather than a life sentence. Now he sat in that same booth, leaning close to Oaklee Reyes—a girl who looked young enough to be his daughter, with her wide eyes and carefully tousled hair that screamed calculated vulnerability.

'I got you something,' I heard him say as he slid a gift bag across the table. His voice carried the tender note I hadn't heard directed at me in years. Oaklee's face lit up with practiced surprise as she pulled out a silk scarf in Montgomery blue—our family color. She pressed it to her chest as though he'd given her his heart instead of something his assistant probably selected.

My thumbnail dug into my palm. The sharp pain kept me anchored as I stood, one hand supporting my lower back, the other steadying myself against the table. The restaurant seemed to quiet as I walked across the room, my heels clicking against the hardwood floor in a rhythm that felt like a countdown.

Ashton saw me first. His face went through a series of expressions—surprise, guilt, and finally that familiar mask of controlled indifference he wore whenever I caught him in something he couldn't explain away.

'Sylvia,' he said, standing abruptly. 'I didn't expect you here.'

Oaklee turned, following his gaze. She was prettier up close—delicate features arranged in an expression of confusion that didn't quite reach her calculating eyes.

'I'm Mrs. Montgomery,' I said, my voice steady and soft. I extended my hand to her with the same composure I'd perfected through five rounds of IVF, three miscarriages, and four pregnancies. 'And you are?'

The color drained from her face so completely I thought she might faint. Her hand trembled as she took mine, her grip feather-light.

'Oaklee,' she whispered. 'Oaklee Reyes.'

I nodded once, then turned to Ashton. 'Don't forget our appointment tomorrow, darling. Dr. Voss says this baby is ready to meet us.' I smiled—the same smile I'd worn at every charity gala, every family dinner, every moment I'd swallowed my pain and played the role of the perfect Montgomery wife.

Without waiting for his response, I walked out, my thumbnail still pressed into my palm, drawing blood I wouldn't acknowledge until I was alone in my car.

Two days later, I sat on the examination table in Dr. Naomi Voss's office, the paper crinkling beneath me as she checked my vitals. My blood pressure was elevated—it had been for weeks. Dr. Voss's eyes flickered to the door, then back to her clipboard.

'Your husband is joining us later?' she asked carefully.

'He's here,' I said, nodding toward the waiting area where Ashton paced, his phone pressed to his ear.

As if summoned by my words, he burst into the examination room, his face tight with that particular expression of manufactured crisis I'd come to recognize.

'Sylvia, I'm sorry, but I have to go,' he said, not quite meeting my eyes. 'It's Oaklee—she's threatening to hurt herself if I don't come right now.'

I felt Dr. Voss's gaze on us, clinical and assessing. She'd been my doctor through all four pregnancies, had seen me bleed, had held my hand through the worst of it. Now she watched as my husband chose another woman over his wife and unborn child.

'Of course,' I said, my voice betraying nothing. 'We'll finish without you.'

He was gone before the door fully closed, leaving behind only the lingering scent of his cologne and the weight of yet another abandonment.

Dr. Voss cleared her throat. 'Let's continue, shall we? Your blood pressure concerns me, Sylvia.'

I nodded, staring at the ceiling as she continued the examination. My emergency contact had departed, but I remained. As I always did.

That evening, I stood in the hallway of the Montgomery estate, my hand pressed against the wall for support as I overheard Ashton's voice from the guest suite.

'You're carrying my child?' The wonder in his voice was something I hadn't heard since our first son was born.

'Yes,' Oaklee whispered, her hand pressed dramatically to her still-flat stomach. 'I was going to tell you, but then you were always with her, and I was scared...'

'You have nothing to fear now,' Ashton promised, pulling her into his arms with a tenderness that made my chest ache. 'I'll protect you both. This is a miracle, Oaklee. A natural conception when the doctors said it was impossible.'

I closed my eyes, leaning harder against the wall. If only he knew. If only he knew that every child he claimed as his own had come from my body through procedures he'd never had to endure, through pain he'd never had to acknowledge.

I slipped away silently, returning to my room where the fireproof box waited under my bed. Inside was the contract—the piece of paper that had bound me to this life, to this family, to this man who couldn't see me even when I stood right in front of him.

I traced my fingers over Lillian's signature, then my own. The finish line was close. Just a few more days until this pregnancy ended, until the final payment cleared, until I could walk away from the Montgomery name and everything it had cost me.
