Chapter 3

The prenatal appointment was on a Tuesday, at eleven, and I'd put it in his calendar myself three weeks earlier, back when I still did things like that—small, hopeful gestures, breadcrumbs left out for a man who never followed them home.

At ten forty, my phone buzzed. *Something came up. Sorry.* No explanation. No question about how it went, whether I needed him, whether the doctor found anything worth knowing. Just four words and a period, like he was closing a door softly enough that I wouldn't hear the latch.

I sat alone in the waiting room and listened to another woman's husband ask the ultrasound tech if that flickering shape was the heartbeat, and I watched my own hands in my lap, very still, very steady, while something in my chest cracked along a seam I didn't know was there.

He came home after midnight. I heard the door, heard him shed his shoes in the dark, careful not to wake me—except I wasn't asleep. I was sitting up in bed with the lamp on, waiting, the way I used to wait years ago before I understood what waiting cost.

"Where were you?" I asked. Quiet. Not an accusation. Just a question, the way you'd ask someone the time.

He stood in the doorway, tie already loose, and rubbed the back of his neck like the question tired him. "With Lilah," he said. "She's going through something terrible, Felicity. I'm just being a decent person."

*Decent.* The word landed somewhere under my ribs and stayed there, humming. Five years of dinners eaten alone. Five years of a phone that lit up for everyone but me. And now, decency—finally, generously extended—to a woman who wasn't even his wife.

I didn't say anything. I turned off the lamp and walked into the other room, and I heard him exhale behind me, relieved, the way you're relieved when a difficult conversation doesn't happen.

I found the flowers the next morning. Same as always—a small bundle of wildflowers, damp-stemmed, propped against my door like they'd grown there overnight. I'd noticed them for months and never asked. Some part of me, I think, hadn't wanted to know, because knowing would mean someone had been paying attention, and I wasn't ready for what that would feel like.

I rode the elevator down with them still in my hand, and it stopped one floor below mine, and Asa Foster stepped in holding a coffee and a roll of blueprints under one arm.

"Those are nice," he said, glancing at the flowers, and something in his voice told me before I even asked.

"It's you," I said. "The flowers. It's been you."

He didn't look embarrassed, exactly. Just steady. "Didn't seem worth making a thing of it."

The doors slid shut. He pressed the button for the lobby without asking, like he already knew where I was headed, or maybe he just knew I hadn't decided yet.

"How are you feeling?" he asked. Then, before I could give him the answer I'd given everyone else for months—*fine, good, great*—he added, "Specifically. Not the general version."

I stood there with wildflowers wilting slightly in my grip, and for a second I couldn't remember the last time anyone had asked me a question with a follow-up attached to it, a question that expected a real answer instead of a polite one.

"Tired," I said. It came out smaller than I meant it to.

He nodded, like that was a complete and sufficient thing to say, and he held the elevator door open a beat longer than he needed to when we reached the lobby, letting me go first. He didn't offer advice. He didn't tell me it would get better. He just let the word sit there between us, acknowledged, which was somehow more than five years of marriage had ever offered it.

I thought about that exchange for the rest of the day. Not the flowers. The question.

*

The call came at four that afternoon. Priscilla, a friend from the gallery circuit, her voice pitched into that particular register people use when they're delivering bad news they find secretly delicious.

"I didn't want you to hear it from someone else," she said. "Dawson was at Cipriani last night. With Lilah Patterson. Corner table." A pause, sized perfectly for effect. "He was holding her hands. Both of them. Across the tablecloth."

"Thank you for telling me," I said, and I meant it, in the flat way you mean things when you've already stopped feeling the floor drop.

I hung up and sat down at the kitchen table with both hands wrapped around a mug of tea I'd made an hour before and forgotten about. It had gone cold. I didn't get up to make another. I just sat there, watching the surface of it, still and gray, while somewhere below me a man who left flowers by my door was probably home from work by now, and somewhere across town my husband's hands were still warm from someone else's.
