Chapter 4

I heard it through a door that was not quite closed.

Rowan and a man I did not recognize—Declan's legal counsel, I gathered, from the way he spoke in citations—were in the corridor outside the healing wing. Their voices were low and precise, the kind of voices that do not expect to be overheard.

'Hollowridge statute requires the rejected mate's physical signature on the dissolution form within Hollowridge territory,' the counsel said. 'Without it, the rejection is technically incomplete under pack law. Opposing counsel could argue the bond was never formally severed.'

'Which creates a vulnerability in the custody position,' Rowan said.

'A manageable one. But present.'

A pause. Papers shuffling.

'The window closes in seventy-two hours.'

I did not move. I lay still in the bed with my eyes on the ceiling and listened to them walk away down the corridor.

Then I looked at the twins.

Two small breathing shapes. The smaller one had her fist pressed to her cheek in her sleep. I had started thinking of her as the stubborn one, though it was too early to know anything about them yet. Maybe I just needed her to be stubborn. Maybe I needed one of us to be.

I ran the logistics in my head the way I used to run them in the Hollowridge kitchen when I was planning something I did not want Kenneth to notice. Quietly. Efficiently. Without feeling.

The paperwork required my presence. The window was closing. Ironcrest's custody position could not afford the complication. Declan's legal team would want to file the tribunal petition clean, without a loose thread that Kenneth's lawyers could pull.

I was the thread.

I could remove myself.

I told myself it was practical. I did not examine what else it was.

---

Declan left for Council chambers at ten past midnight. I watched the door close behind him.

I waited twenty minutes. Then I got up.

Elara was at the nursing station at the end of the corridor. I could hear the soft scratch of her pen. The twins were asleep, both of them, the crib warmer humming its low note. I tucked the blanket at the smaller one's shoulder. I stood there for a moment longer than I needed to.

Then I walked out.

---

Hollowridge at dawn looked exactly like it always had. That was the thing about places that had hurt you—they did not change their faces for the occasion.

I walked through the main entrance without announcement. The Gamma on duty at the door went still when he saw me. I did not stop.

Kenneth was in his office. Of course he was. He had always worked early, before the pack was awake, in the quiet hours when no one could interrupt the performance of authority.

He looked up when I opened the door, and for a moment his face did something unguarded. Something I had not seen in years. Not fear exactly. The thing that lives next to fear in men who do not allow themselves to feel it.

The dissolution form was on his desk. Someone had already prepared it.

I crossed the room. I picked up the pen. I did not look at him.

My hand was steady. I made sure of that. I signed my name in the same careful letters my mother had taught me—*Serena Voss*, not his name, never his name again—and I set the pen down.

I turned and walked out.

I did not look at the Luna suite door, though I registered the gap where Jasmine's silk robe hung visible on the hook. I did not look at the infirmary. I did not look at the Omega cellar stairs.

I walked across the border as the sun came up over the tree line, and I told myself I felt nothing.

My wolf said otherwise. A low, grinding sound in the back of my skull. Not rage. Something older and heavier than rage, something that had no clean name. Grief, maybe. Or the particular exhaustion of a wound you close yourself because no one else is going to do it.

*I know,* I told her. *I know.*

---

I was back in bed when Declan came in.

I knew from the way he stood in the doorway that Rowan had already told him. He had the report. He had read it. He was not surprised.

He said my name.

Just my name. Not the Alpha register—something quieter and more dangerous than that, something that had no tone to hide behind.

The silence after it filled the room.

'It needed to be done,' I said. My voice came out even. Measured. 'Your custody position—'

'I know what my custody position is.'

'Then you know I was right.'

He crossed the room slowly. He stopped at the edge of the bed. He looked at me the way he had looked at me in the cellar—that complete, unblinking attention that felt like being seen through rather than looked at.

'You walked into his territory alone,' he said. 'Still healing. No escort. No markings.'

'I didn't need markings. I needed a pen.'

'Serena.'

'I will not be someone who needs to be carried through every door.' The words came out before I could measure them. Quiet and final. 'I spent six years in that house being made smaller every time I asked for something. I am not doing that again. Not even here. Not even with you.'

Something moved through his face. Not anger—or not only anger. Something more complicated. The look of a man who had planned every contingency and had not planned for this one.

He sat on the edge of the bed. He did not speak for a long moment.

Then, slowly, he reached up and pressed his lips to the cold scar on my neck.

Deliberate. Unhurried. His scent moved through me like heat through cold stone—cedar and dark water and something alive, something that did not flinch.

'It will never be cold again,' he said against my skin.

My hand came up. I covered his.

It was the first time I had let anyone touch the scar. I had not known, until that moment, that I had been guarding it.
