Chapter 4

I sat alone in my quarters that night with the field notebook open on the desk in front of me.

The pages were filled with documentation I'd compiled from memory—chain dimensions, silver concentration in the cage lining, guard rotation patterns during my imprisonment. Every detail recorded with the same precision I'd used to manage Ironveil's border patrols for three years. Evidence. Leverage. Insurance.

My hands started to shake.

I set the pen down and pressed my palms flat against the desk. The tremor ran from my wrists up through my forearms. I watched it happen like I was observing someone else's body.

I filed the shaking away. Noted it. Acknowledged it. Did not allow it to spread.

But the avalanche memory surfaced anyway.

Colorado. Early in the bond, maybe six months after we'd marked each other. A mountain pack run with a neighboring Alpha's wolves. The blizzard had come out of nowhere—one moment clear sky, the next moment white-out conditions and the low rumble of snow breaking loose higher up the slope.

I'd been in human form, too far from the tree line. The avalanche hit before I could shift.

Killian had been twenty yards ahead in wolf form. I'd seen him turn, seen the exact moment his wolf registered what was happening. He'd shifted mid-stride and thrown himself back toward me, his body slamming into mine hard enough to knock the air from my lungs.

He'd wrapped himself around me. His back to the snow. His arms and legs caging me against his chest. His weight and warmth the only thing between me and the crushing white that buried us both.

We'd been under for maybe ninety seconds before the other wolves dug us out. It had felt longer. I'd pressed my face against his chest and felt his heartbeat—steady, deliberate, refusing to panic even as the snow compressed around us.

The scar along his collarbone had come from that. A jagged line where a buried branch had torn through skin and muscle. He'd needed seventeen stitches. He'd told the pack Healer to work on me first.

I had believed that scar was proof of something irreversible.

I closed the field notebook.

The hollow mark on my neck felt cold. I pressed my thumb against it and the skin there was just skin now. No warmth. No pull. No bond reaching back.

I did not allow myself to finish the thought.

I stood and walked to the window. The northern forest stretched out below Bloodcrest's walls, dark and dense under the moonlight. Somewhere beyond that tree line, across the border, Killian was receiving the full weight of what he'd done.

I felt nothing.

I told myself I felt nothing.

I went to bed and did not sleep.

---

At Ironveil, the consequences of my absence were compounding.

I didn't know this yet. I would learn it later, piece by piece, through intelligence reports and whispered pack gossip that filtered across the border. But that night, while I lay awake in Bloodcrest quarters staring at the ceiling, Ironveil was beginning to fracture.

The border patrol rotations I'd maintained for three years—the careful balance of experienced Deltas on high-risk corridors, the seasonal adjustments for rogue migration patterns, the backup protocols for weather disruptions—all of it fell into disarray within the first week.

Killian tried to manage it himself. He was an Alpha. He had dominance and authority and a commanding aura. What he didn't have was patience for operational detail or the strategic mind to see three moves ahead.

Gaps appeared in the eastern corridor. Two rogue scouts exploited them within five days, penetrating deep enough into Ironveil territory to mark three perimeter trees before a patrol finally caught their scent.

Pack members whispered. Not loudly. Not openly. But the whispers were there.

Three Deltas requested reassignment to other duties. They cited personal reasons. Everyone knew what the real reason was.

And Killian's wolf—that massive, glossy-black creature that had once radiated dominance so thick you could taste it in the air—began to change.

It started going quiet. Not dormant, exactly, but unresponsive. Between sunrise and moonrise it refused to speak to him, refused to surface even when called. When he did manage to shift, the coat that had been glossy black was now muted, ashen grey. Dull.

He gripped the back of his neck in the privacy of his study—that unconscious tell I'd learned to read in our first year together—and called to his wolf.

It did not answer.

The bond severance was killing it. Slowly. Biologically. A true fated bond, once broken, leaves damage that dominance cannot repair.

I would learn all of this later. That night, I only knew that somewhere across the border, the man who had shielded my body with his own was beginning to understand what he'd destroyed.

---

Tiana moved quickly to consolidate her position.

She redistributed my former patrol assignments—complex strategic rotations that required years of experience—to Omegas who had no training for the work. She installed herself in the Luna's office, the same desk where I'd spent three years managing intelligence reports and pack correspondence.

She began signing documents with the Luna title.

She scheduled a formal pregnancy announcement before the assembled pack. Invitations went out. The date was set. She chose a white dress—not quite a Luna ceremony gown, but close enough to make the statement clear.

She did not know that the Ironveil pack Healer had begun quietly preserving his own records.

He was a principled man. Oath-bound. He had passed the dungeon corridor that night and seen her standing there, watching through the bars while I sat chained in silver. He had seen her face. She had not flinched.

He filed that observation away. He made copies of his medical notes—not just the current pregnancy documentation, but older records too. Baseline bloodwork. Genetic markers. Details that would matter later, when questions were asked under oath.

He stored the copies in a locked cabinet in his private office. He did not tell anyone.

But he was ready.

All of this was happening while I lay awake in Bloodcrest, staring at the ceiling, pressing my thumb against the hollow mark on my neck and telling myself I felt nothing.

The avalanche memory would not leave. Killian's weight. His warmth. The steady beat of his heart against my cheek while the snow crushed down around us.

I had believed that moment was proof.

I closed my eyes and made myself breathe. In. Out. Steady.

The bond was dead. What he had been did not change what he had become.

I would not allow the memory to rewrite the present.

I pressed my thumb harder against the hollow mark until the pressure became pain, and the pain became something I could focus on instead of the image of his body curled around mine in the snow.

Eventually, near dawn, I slept.
