Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday night.

I felt it the moment Killian spoke the first word of the vow. The crescent mark on my neck—the one that had been warm against my skin for three years—went ice-cold. Not painful yet. Just cold, like someone pressed a frozen coin to my throat.

I was standing in the great hall with the rest of Ironveil Pack. We'd assembled for what I thought was a routine formal gathering. I'd dressed carefully: the deep green gown that Killian once said matched my eyes, my hair pinned back the way a Luna's should be. I'd even double-checked the seating chart that morning, making sure the visiting Delta from the northern border would be positioned near the Healer for the discussion about rogue movement patterns.

But when I walked into the hall, Tiana Hill was standing at Killian's left on the dais.

Close. Too close.

Her jasmine-and-amber scent reached me before I was halfway across the stone floor. My wolf went rigid inside me—not growling, just utterly still, the way an animal goes still when it knows the predator has already seen it.

Killian's eyes found mine across the hall. For one breath I thought I saw something flicker there. Regret, maybe. Or hesitation.

Then his face went blank.

"I, Killian Spencer, Alpha of Ironveil," he said, and his voice carried the Alpha tone that made every wolf in the room go silent and still, "reject you, Jolie Montgomery, as my mate and Luna."

The cold at my neck turned into a fist. It punched inward, through skin and muscle and bone, straight into my chest. The bond didn't snap—it ripped. Like someone tearing a root system out of soil, shredding every small connection on the way out.

I dropped to one knee.

The stone floor was cold under my palm. I could hear my own breathing, too fast and too shallow. My wolf was screaming inside me, a sound with no voice, just endless tearing pain. The mark on my neck had gone from ice-cold to hollow. Empty. Like a door slamming shut in a room that used to be full.

The hall was silent. Two hundred wolves watching. I could feel their eyes.

Tiana's jasmine-and-amber scent was stronger now. She'd moved closer to Killian. Close enough that I could see her hand resting lightly on his forearm.

I pushed myself to my feet.

My legs shook. The bond-severance pain was still radiating through my chest in waves, each one worse than the last. My wolf was still screaming, that silent howl that only I could hear. But I made myself stand.

I crossed the distance between us. Twenty feet. Fifteen. Ten.

Killian's eyes widened slightly. For the first time since I'd entered the hall, he looked uncertain.

I struck him across the face.

The crack of the blow echoed through the silent hall. His head snapped to the side. Blood welled at the corner of his mouth where my knuckles split his lip.

I didn't raise my voice. I didn't need to. The hall was so quiet I could hear my own heartbeat.

"I will never accept you again," I said.

My voice came out steady. Low. Deliberate. Every word chosen with the precision of a Luna who had spent three years managing this pack, who knew exactly how much weight language carried in this room.

"Not if you beg. Not if you crawl. Not if you spend the rest of your life trying to undo this."

I pressed my hand to the hollow mark on my neck. The skin there felt wrong now. Empty.

"You wanted to reject me?" I said. "Congratulations, Alpha. You're free."

I turned and walked toward the hall's main doors. My legs were still shaking. The bond-severance pain was still tearing through my chest with every breath. But I kept my spine straight and my steps even.

I could feel every wolf in the room watching me leave.

I didn't look back.

Behind me, I heard Tiana's voice, soft and sweet, asking Killian if he was all right. I heard the rustle of fabric as she moved closer to him.

My wolf surged briefly—a flare of heat and rage that felt like it would burn me alive from the inside. Then it was gone, collapsing back into that agonized silence.

I reached the doors. Pushed them open. Stepped out into the night air.

The cold hit my face and I realized I was crying. Not sobbing. Just silent tears running down my cheeks, hot against my skin.

I pressed my hand harder against the hollow mark on my neck. The bond was gone. Three years. Three years of believing this was the anchor I'd been denied since childhood. Three years of building a life, a pack, a fragile sense of healing.

Gone.

I walked across the courtyard toward the guest quarters where I'd left my field notebook and the few personal belongings I kept separate from the Luna's suite. My legs were steadier now. The bond-severance pain was settling into a dull, constant ache instead of those sharp waves.

I had work to do.

I needed to pack. I needed to organize my patrol intelligence files. I needed to figure out where I was going and how I was going to get there without using any of Ironveil's resources.

Behind me, the great hall's doors opened again. I heard footsteps on the stone. Multiple sets. Voices, low and urgent.

I didn't turn around.

I reached the guest quarters, pushed the door open, and stepped inside. My field notebook was on the desk where I'd left it. My travel bag was in the closet. I could be packed in twenty minutes.

I heard Killian's voice from somewhere across the courtyard, raised and sharp. Giving orders.

My wolf stirred again, just barely. Not rage this time. Something colder.

Warning.
