Chapter 3

January arrived with a bitter cold that seemed to seep into everything—the walls, the windows, the spaces between Mark and me.

Lily's visits had become routine now. She appeared at our door three, sometimes four times a week, always with some thoughtful gesture. A casserole "her mother made." Books on child development she thought I'd find "fascinating." Offers to help with Tommy that I'd stopped refusing because saying no felt like admitting something I wasn't ready to name.

"Did you see this article?" Lily asked one Tuesday afternoon, her phone extended toward me as Tommy built towers with his blocks on the living room floor. "It's about helicopter parenting. How hovering too much can actually damage a child's development."

I took the phone, scanning words that blurred together. Attachment theory. Independence. Resilience.

"I'm not hovering," I said, handing it back.

"Of course not." Her smile was gentle, understanding. "I just thought it was interesting. Tommy's so smart—he could probably handle more freedom than most kids his age."

The words lodged somewhere in my throat. Before I could respond, Tommy's tower collapsed. He reached for a block, lost his balance, and his knee cracked against the coffee table's edge.

His cry pierced the air. I moved, but Lily was faster. She was on the floor beside him before I'd taken two steps, her hands already examining the scrape, her voice soothing.

"Oh, sweetheart, you're okay. Let's get you fixed up."

She carried him to the kitchen. I followed, watching as she dampened a cloth, applied antibiotic ointment from her purse—when had she started carrying first aid supplies?—and placed a bandage decorated with cartoon rockets over the wound.

"All better," she said, kissing his forehead.

Tommy wrapped his arms around her neck. "Thank you, Mama Lily."

The world stopped. Those two words hung in the air like smoke, choking me.

"Tommy." My voice came out sharper than intended. "It's just Lily."

His face crumpled. "I'm sorry, Mommy."

"It's alright, buddy," Lily said, but her eyes found mine over his shoulder, and something flickered there. Not guilt. Something closer to satisfaction.

The front door opened. Mark's voice called out, earlier than expected. He appeared in the kitchen doorway, loosening his tie, taking in the scene—Tommy in Lily's arms, the bandage, my rigid posture by the sink.

"What happened?"

"Just a little scrape," Lily said. "Nothing serious. Right, Tommy?"

Tommy nodded, already distracted by the sticker Lily was peeling from a sheet she'd produced from her bag.

That night, after Tommy was asleep, Mark cornered me in our bedroom.

"You snapped at him," he said, his tone accusatory. "Over nothing."

"He called her Mama."

"He's three, Sarah. Kids say things."

"It's not appropriate."

Mark's jaw tightened. "You're being territorial. Lily's been nothing but helpful, and you're acting like she's some kind of threat."

"Maybe because she is."

The words escaped before I could stop them. Mark stared at me, his expression shifting from anger to something worse—pity.

"You're insecure," he said quietly. "That's what this is really about. You're threatened by a twenty-two-year-old intern because she's—"

"Because she's what?"

He didn't finish. Didn't need to. The silence completed the sentence.

I lay awake that night, listening to Mark's peaceful breathing beside me. The bedroom ceiling stretched above like a blank canvas, and I painted my failures across it—six years of sacrifice, of molding myself into his ideal wife, of believing that devotion would be enough.

My phone glowed on the nightstand. I reached for it, my hands steady despite the tremor in my chest. The search terms came easily: "hidden cameras for home." "Voice-activated recorders." "Discrete surveillance equipment."

I found a seller with good reviews, products that arrived in unmarked packaging. I selected carefully—a camera disguised as a phone charger for our bedroom, another hidden in a tissue box for the living room, a voice-activated recorder small enough to hide in Mark's car.

The total came to $847.32. I used Mark's credit card.

When I hit "Place Order," something shifted inside me. The hurt was still there, raw and bleeding, but it was joined by something colder. Something that calculated and planned.

If they wanted to destroy me, they'd have to do it on camera.

I set the phone down and closed my eyes, but sleep didn't come. Instead, I replayed every moment since Lily had entered our lives—every touch that lasted too long, every comment that felt like a test, every time Mark had taken her side over mine.

The packages would arrive in three days. Amazon Prime guaranteed it.

I just had to keep pretending a little longer. Keep playing the role of the oblivious wife, the territorial mother, the woman too naive to see what was happening in her own home.

Outside, wind rattled the windows. Somewhere in the house, a floorboard creaked. And I lay there in the darkness, waiting for my weapons to arrive.
