Chapter 5

The pack run was Legend's idea.

He framed it as a morale exercise—something to remind the pack of its strength after the rogue breach. Clean air, familiar terrain, the reassurance of running together. I understood the strategy. It was a good one.

What I didn't anticipate was Waverly volunteering to join my squad.

She did it in front of everyone, standing in the staging area with her hands clasped and her voice pitched at exactly the right level of earnest. 'I want to contribute,' she said. 'I want the pack to see I'm serious about being here.'

A few heads turned toward me, waiting.

I said nothing. I turned and led my squad to the starting line.

---

The first two miles were fine.

The terrain opened into the ridge descent around mile three—a steep, loose-rock face that required tight formation and precise footwork. I'd run it a hundred times. My squad knew it cold. We dropped into the standard staggered line, each runner accounting for the person ahead, the kind of instinctive coordination that took months to build.

Waverly was three positions back. I'd placed her there deliberately, between two of my steadiest runners, where she couldn't do much damage.

I was wrong.

I felt her before I heard her—a sudden, violent shift in weight behind me, the wrong kind of contact, not a stumble but a shove. Her shoulder drove into my lower back with enough force to be intentional, and the world tilted. My left foot skidded on loose shale. The ravine yawned below the ridge's edge, maybe eight feet to my right, all jagged rock and a fifteen-foot drop.

I caught myself on a planted knee, one hand slamming into the ground, gravel biting into my palm. The squad lurched around me, someone grabbing my arm, voices breaking the formation.

Behind me, Waverly made a sound of distress. 'Oh—I slipped, I'm so sorry, the rocks—'

I stood up. Brushed the gravel from my hand. Looked at the drop I'd nearly gone over.

Then I looked at Nolan.

He was already stopped. Already watching her.

---

'That wasn't a slip.'

Nolan's voice cut across the whole squad, flat and carrying. He wasn't looking at me. He was looking at Waverly, and his expression was the one he got when he'd already done the math and didn't like the answer.

'Rodriguez—' Legend started.

'I was watching from the rear,' Nolan said, not raising his voice, not backing down. 'She adjusted her line before contact. That was a deliberate push toward the drop.' He paused. 'On a formation run. On a ridge descent. That's not a skill gap. That's a decision.'

The squad had gone very still. Twenty-some wolves, all of them holding their breath.

Waverly's face crumpled into something soft and wounded. 'That's not—I would never—'

Legend stepped between them.

He put himself directly in front of Waverly, his back to Nolan, and when he spoke his voice had that edge to it—the Alpha tone, barely restrained, aimed at the wrong person. 'You're out of line, Delta. Stand down.'

Nolan looked at him for one long second. Then he looked at me.

He didn't say anything else. He didn't have to.

---

Legend turned to me, and I watched something shift in his expression—the beginning of an explanation, the familiar architecture of a justification. His hand came up, reaching for my arm the way it always did when he wanted to redirect me somewhere quieter, somewhere private, somewhere the pack couldn't hear what I was about to say.

I stepped back.

Not far. Just enough.

His hand dropped.

'Juliana.' My name in his mouth, low and careful. 'Let me explain—'

'No.' My voice came out steady. Quieter than I expected. 'You don't get to explain this one.'

I looked at him—really looked at him—and felt something in my chest go very, very still. Six years. A rogue map with her scent on it. A championship he didn't attend. A Luna's chair she sat in without blinking. And now this. Now Nolan standing there with gravel still on his boots from where he'd stopped to be the only honest person on this ridge.

I took a breath.

'I, Juliana Martin, Delta of the Black Moon Pack,' I said, loud enough for every wolf on that ridge to hear, 'reject you, Legend Hayes, son of Alpha Dominic Hayes, as my fated mate.'

The words hit the air like a match hitting dry grass.

The bond snapped.

I felt it go—a tearing, white-hot severance somewhere behind my sternum, the kind of pain that takes the breath clean out of you. I absorbed it. I stayed standing.

Legend didn't.

He went down hard, one knee, then both, his hand pressed to his chest like something inside him had broken loose. The sound he made wasn't a word. It wasn't anything I had a name for.

The pack stood in total silence around us.

I turned and walked down the ridge alone.
