Chapter 1

The raffle ticket was still warm from my coat pocket when they called my name.

I almost didn't hear it. The ballroom was loud — paddles going up, a live band doing something jazzy in the corner, the particular noise of two hundred people performing generosity for each other. I was standing near the back, holding a glass of sparkling water I hadn't touched, thinking about whether Gerardo had remembered to pick up Kohen from soccer.

Then the emcee said it again. "Audrey Bryant."

I walked up to the stage on legs that didn't feel entirely mine. The prize coordinator was a small woman in a green blazer who pressed a folder into my hands and shook them with both of hers. "Congratulations," she said, and her eyes were bright like she meant it. "You just won the grand prize."

The folder held a property summary. A lakefront estate. 4.2 million dollars. Zoned for Lakeshore Academy.

I stood at that podium for probably four seconds. Long enough to read the address twice. Long enough to feel something crack open in my chest — not grief, for once. Something lighter. Something I hadn't felt in so long I almost didn't recognize it.

Luck. Plain, stupid, beautiful luck.

In the parking lot I sat in my five-year-old sedan and held the ticket stub under the dome light. Outside, Seattle was doing its usual gray drizzle. My phone had two texts from Gerardo: one saying his call was running long, one saying don't wait up.

I tucked the stub into the inside pocket of my coat, right against my ribs, and drove home rehearsing how I'd tell him. I'd set the folder on the dinner table. I'd let him read it. I'd watch his face.

I was still smiling when I came through the back door.

---

Gerardo had Carmen pressed against the kitchen counter.

His hands were on her hips. Her mouth was at his neck. The overhead light was on — not dim, not ambiguous — just the ordinary bright kitchen light we'd picked out together at a Home Depot six years ago.

I stopped in the doorway.

For a moment nobody moved. Then Gerardo stepped back. Not fast, not guilty — more like a man who has been mildly interrupted. He looked at me with something closer to irritation than shame.

Carmen smoothed her shirt. She looked at me with those careful, neutral eyes she always had. "Audrey," she said. "Did you need something?"

I opened my mouth.

Then Kohen appeared behind me in the hallway. Nine years old, in his soccer cleats, tracking mud on the floor I'd mopped that morning. He looked at my face and then at the room and then back at me.

"Mom," he said, in the flat, patient voice of someone delivering a verdict. "Can you stop making everything about yourself?"

The three of them looked at me. Gerardo with that tired furrow between his brows. Carmen with her hands folded. Kohen with borrowed certainty in his eyes.

I said I needed air.

I walked to the car. I sat in the driveway with the engine off and my hands in my lap and I breathed. In through the nose, out through the mouth, the way I used to do before presentations that scared me, back when I had presentations.

I did not go back inside. I did not mention the ticket.

---

Riley lived twenty minutes away in a second-floor apartment that always smelled like coffee and dry-erase markers. She was still in her work clothes when she opened the door. She took one look at my face and stepped aside.

I sat on her kitchen floor. I don't know why the floor. It just seemed right.

I told her what I'd seen. I told it carefully, the way I'd learned to — with qualifiers, with hedges, with the little verbal genuflections that had become habit. "I mean, I might have misread it." "It probably looked worse than it was." "Maybe I'm —"

"Stop," Riley said.

She sat down across from me on the linoleum. She didn't touch her coffee. She just listened until I ran out of ways to talk around what I'd seen.

Then she slid a piece of paper across the floor.

A name, handwritten. A direct phone number.

*Sylas Richardson.*

"He's the best in the city," she said. "I've watched him work. He doesn't lose."

I picked it up. The paper was soft at the fold, like she'd been carrying it for a while.

I didn't call that night. But I didn't put it down either.

---

The next morning I made two calls.

The first was to a trust attorney Riley's firm had used. Quiet, fast, thorough. By afternoon, the lakefront estate had moved into a blind trust under a name that wasn't mine and wasn't Gerardo's. No public record. No spousal notification required. The deed disappeared into paperwork the way a stone disappears into still water — without a ripple, without a sound.

The second call was to Sylas Richardson's office.

The earliest available consultation was Thursday at nine a.m.

I took it.
