Chapter 2

I sat on that infirmary floor until the candles in the hall burned out.

I know this because I could smell them die — wax and smoke drifting down the corridor one by one, the pack's celebration quietly extinguishing itself in the dark. My neck had stopped bleeding by then. The wolfsbane had done what it intended to do and settled into scar tissue, a permanent record written in ruined skin. I kept my hand near my father's on the cot. Not touching. Just near.

His chest rose. His chest fell.

The healer had stopped coming in to check. I think she couldn't look at me.

I sat there and I thought, with the particular clarity that comes after the worst has already happened, about Vincent Powell's visits to our house. About the handwriting my father let him copy. About the notes passed over dinner tables with smiles attached, the strategic frameworks Vincent had admired so genuinely — so carefully — over all those years. I thought about Brittany in her white dress, already wearing it, already standing in a position she'd been fitted for long before that night. I thought about the way Easton had stepped onto the platform, not toward me but up, where the whole pack could witness.

Not one piece of it was improvised.

That was what settled into me there on the floor, heavier than the rejection, heavier than the scarring. It had been planned. All of it. The ceremony, the timing, the dress. The champagne glass. The chamber where Vincent had taken my father afterward, that focused Alpha pressure I'd felt through the wood like a millstone grinding. The strategies had already been stolen. The alliance had already been decided. What happened to Marcus Allen and his daughter on the night of her Come of Age Ceremony was not cruelty.

It was cleanup.

We were the last loose ends.

I put my palm flat on the floor beside my father's cot. The tile was cold. I pressed my hand into it until the cold went all the way up my arm, and I made the only promise I have ever kept.

*I will come back for this.*

I didn't know what back meant yet. I didn't know what shape it would take. I only knew that I was going to leave — because staying was dying, and I was not finished — and that I was going to return with something large enough to make the people in that ceremony hall understand what they had watched happen and chosen to ignore.

By the time the infirmary windows went gray with early light, I was already deciding which direction to run.

---

I crossed the Ironveil border before sunrise. I didn't take much. A bag. My father's old compass, the one he'd used to teach me map work — small enough to close in my fist. I cut my pack insignia from my jacket with the edge of a belt buckle and left it on the ground just past the perimeter marker, right where the grass changed from maintained to wild.

The rogue border doesn't feel like anything, crossing it. I'd expected it to. I'd expected some physical sensation to mark the moment I stopped being pack and started being nothing. But the ground was the same on both sides. The sky was the same. What changed was just that nobody was looking for me anymore.

I walked east.

The weeks after that are not something I spend much time in. I was in bad shape — worse than I admitted to myself at the time. The wolfsbane scarring still pulled when I turned my head too fast. My wolf was quiet in a way that frightened me, the awakening that should have been a beginning sitting stunned and silent at the bottom of my chest like something hit by a car. I ate what I could find. I slept in rogue shelters when there were any, in trees when there weren't. I thought about my father's face when I'd left him — eyes closed, chest rising and falling, wolf gone dark inside him — and I used the grief the way my father had taught me to use terrain. Deliberately. As a resource.

I made it to the coast. Then to the water. Then across it.

---

France was wet the morning Margaux found me.

I was in a forest outside Paris — I'd drifted there by accident or instinct, I couldn't have told you which — and I was not doing well. Six months of rogue living had taken what the rejection night hadn't finished. I was half my father's daughter by then, the strategic half still functional, the other half operating on something closer to spite than hope.

I didn't hear her coming. That was the first remarkable thing. A wolf her size moving through underbrush — and she was large, even in human form, with the particular density of very old power worn casually — should have made sound. She didn't. She simply arrived at the edge of my sight and stopped.

She looked at me for a long time without speaking.

I looked back. I had nothing left to perform for strangers.

"You're starving," she said finally. Her English carried the shape of French beneath it, centuries of it. "And your wolf is not dormant. She's furious. There is a significant difference."

"Who are you?"

"Someone who has been waiting for a bloodline like yours for a very long time." She tilted her head. "I did not expect it to arrive in this condition, but that is the Moon Goddess's sense of humor."

I stared at her. My wolf stirred at the base of my chest — not the stunned silence of the past months but something sharper. Wary. Interested.

"What do you want from me?" I asked.

"Nothing." She said it simply, like it was obvious. "I want to give you something. Recognition. And work — years of it, more than you're prepared for." She paused. "The recognition first. You are not what happened to you in that hall. You are what was asleep underneath it, and you are considerably more dangerous than anyone who put you on that floor will understand until it is far too late for them."

The forest was quiet. Rain moved through the canopy above us, soft and even.

I thought about Easton stepping onto that platform. I thought about my father's wolf, gone dark. I thought about Brittany's white dress, already pressed and waiting.

"What kind of work?" I said.

Margaux smiled. It was not a warm smile. It was the smile of someone handing you a weapon and being honest about what it is.

"The kind," she said, "that takes everything you have and leaves you with more than you started with."

I stood up. My neck pulled. My wolf uncurled one slow inch in my chest, for the first time since the ceremony hall, and raised her head.

"Alright," I said.

The training began.
