Chapter 3

The training grounds were packed that afternoon. At least forty wolves, maybe more—warriors running drills, younger pack members practicing shifts, the usual organized chaos that came with preparing for border patrol rotations. I stood near the edge of the clearing, clipboard in hand, pretending to review supply inventories. It was easier to be present but invisible. Easier to observe without being observed.

Sadie led the warrior formations today. She moved through the ranks with that particular confidence she'd perfected—shoulders back, voice carrying, every gesture designed to project strength. Nash watched from the raised platform near the equipment shed, arms crossed, nodding approval at her commands.

I felt the mind-link open before I understood what was happening.

It wasn't the normal pack communication channel—the one used for coordinating patrols or alerting members to threats. This was different. Forced. The psychic equivalent of someone kicking down a door and flooding a room with light.

Every wolf in the training grounds froze.

The vision hit like a physical blow. Nash's bedroom. Morning light filtering through curtains I'd helped him choose. The bed—our bed, though I hadn't slept there in weeks—with Nash sprawled across rumpled sheets. And beside him, her head on his pillow, her hand resting on his chest: Sadie.

The image was intimate. Unmistakably sexual. The kind of scene that left no room for misinterpretation.

Around me, wolves exchanged glances. Some looked away quickly. Others stared at me, waiting for a reaction. Rhea Voss whispered something to the warrior beside her, barely concealing a smirk.

The vision held for three seconds. Maybe four. Long enough for every wolf present to absorb it completely.

Then it dissolved.

But before the mind-link channel closed, a second message arrived—private this time, threaded directly into my consciousness with surgical precision. Sadie's voice, smooth and satisfied: *He says my name in his sleep. Does he say yours?*

My thumb found my wrist. Pressed hard.

Sable surged beneath my ribs, snarling so loud I thought everyone would hear it. But the sound stayed trapped inside my chest, contained behind five years of practiced suppression.

I didn't look at Sadie. Didn't look at Nash. I kept my eyes on the clipboard, pen moving across paper like nothing had happened. Like my entire world hadn't just been broadcast to forty witnesses.

The restraint clearly frustrated her. I could feel it through the residual psychic connection—that flicker of irritation when the expected reaction didn't materialize. She'd wanted tears. Rage. Public humiliation. Instead, I gave her nothing.

But I did something else.

Drawing on the Lycan ability I'd kept hidden for five years—the capacity to capture and preserve psychic imprints with perfect clarity—I quietly recorded everything. The forced mind-link opening. The broadcast vision. The private message. Every detail stored with the kind of precision that would hold up under Lycan Court scrutiny.

That evening, alone in my chambers, I forwarded the entire imprint to Elise with a single instruction: *Add it to the file. Transmit to allied Alphas' communication channel under Silvercrest authentication once dossier is complete.*

Her response came within minutes: *Received. This crosses into psychic assault territory. The Council will take it seriously.*

I set the phone down and stared at the ceiling. Sable was still snarling, but quieter now. Patient. Like she understood that the time for restraint was measured in days, not years.

Two days later, Nash called a pack meeting.

The great hall filled quickly. Border patrol rotations were routine business, but mandatory attendance meant everyone showed up—warriors, support staff, families. I took my usual seat near the back, close enough to be present but far enough to avoid direct attention.

Nash stood at the front, Sadie beside him. He was explaining the new rotation schedule when Sadie suddenly gasped and stumbled backward, clutching her forearm.

Blood seeped between her fingers.

The hall went silent.

"Sadie?" Nash's voice carried immediate concern. He moved toward her, hand reaching for her arm. "What happened?"

"I'm fine." Her voice trembled. She kept her eyes lowered, the perfect picture of someone trying to be brave through pain. "It's nothing."

"That's not nothing." Nash gently pulled her hand away, revealing a fresh gash across her forearm—deep enough to bleed freely but positioned carefully to avoid major damage. "Who did this?"

Sadie hesitated. The pause was perfectly timed. Long enough to suggest reluctance, short enough to maintain dramatic tension. When she finally spoke, her voice broke. "Juliette attacked me. In the corridor. Before the meeting."

Every head turned toward me.

"She said—" Sadie's voice caught. She wiped at her eyes with her uninjured hand. "She said I was trying to steal you. That I didn't deserve to be Beta. She came at me so fast I barely had time to defend myself."

The lie was masterful. Trembling voice. Lowered gaze. The posture of a strong she-wolf enduring pain with dignity, reluctant to accuse but forced by truth to speak.

Nash's expression darkened. "Juliette."

I met his eyes. Said nothing.

"Did you attack my Beta?" The Alpha tone threaded through the question, not quite a command but close.

Around us, pack members whispered. Rhea Voss looked openly triumphant. Declan Hurst, Nash's Gamma, frowned slightly but didn't speak.

I pressed my thumb against my wrist. Felt Sable's snarl reverberate through my chest.

And I smiled.

It wasn't a large smile. Just a small curve at the corner of my mouth. The kind of expression that said: *I see exactly what you're doing. And you have no idea what's coming.*

Sadie's eyes widened slightly. Just for a second.

Then I stood, set my notebook carefully on the chair, and walked out of the great hall without saying a single word.
