Chapter 1

Paxton spoke my name at 9:47 on a Thursday night, and the bond died on the second syllable.

"I, Paxton Reed, Alpha of the Silverfang Pack, reject you, Karla Donovan, as my mate and Luna."

The mark on my neck went cold first. Then hollow. Like a door closing inside an empty room. I felt the second half of my body — the half that had lived in his chest since our Come of Age — pull loose and drop out of me. My wolf, already thin from months of something wrong in my food, whispered my name once and then went silent. Not asleep. Silent. The kind of silence that has no floor.

I stayed standing for four heartbeats. I counted them. I have always counted things when I am afraid.

On the fifth, my knees folded.

The fire pit crackled. Somewhere behind Paxton, past the shoulder where Rylee had positioned herself with the exact half-step of deference she had rehearsed for months, a log split and threw sparks. No one moved. I watched my own hand go down into the dirt in front of me and I remember thinking, distantly, that the ground of the assembly clearing smelled like pine and smoke and the wolfsbane trace I could still identify on Rylee's sleeve from three meters away. Even without a wolf. My Healer nose does not care whether I want it to work.

Two Omegas came for me. I did not see their faces. They lifted me under the arms the way you lift a body, not a woman. Someone in the crowd — I think it was Marla, who used to braid Lily's hair — made a small sound and stopped it before it finished. That was the loudest noise anyone made on my behalf.

Rylee stood in the pack house doorway as they carried me past. Her face was arranged into concern, the corners of her mouth pulled down with a precision I might have admired in another life. Our eyes met. She did not blink.

I did not either.

---

They left me on the unpaved road at the territory line the way you leave a bag of feed.

I do not know how long I lay there. Long enough for the shaking to become something I could work around instead of something that owned me. I pressed two fingers to the inside of my left wrist — my mother's habit, my mother's hands in mine when I was six years old, *this is how you listen, Karla, this is how you know* — and I found my pulse. It was there. Slower than it should be. But there.

I made myself replay it. All of it. Not because I wanted to. Because a Healer preserves evidence, and the only evidence I had was inside my own skull.

The faint green scent on Lily's nursery bedding — refined wolfsbane, cut so fine that only a Healer nose could catch it, layered week over week into the cotton like someone had been dusting flour into bread. Lily's immune system unraveling in slow, cascading failures no pack doctor could name. My voice in Paxton's office: *There is wolfsbane in her room, Pax, I can smell it, someone is —* And his Alpha tone, blunt as a hammer: *Stop making accusations, Karla. You're not well.*

Rylee behind him. Eyes down. Hands folded. Perfect.

And then Lily. Six months old. Milk and warm fur and something faintly green like new leaves. Dying in my arms while Paxton ran the northern patrol with the woman who had killed her.

I sealed it. The way my mother taught me to seal a vial — airtight, labeled, filed inside the ribs where nothing could reach it. Then I sat up.

My neck was numb where the mark had been. My chest was quiet where the bond had lived. But I still had my Healer senses, and I still had a mother's memory, and somewhere in the back of that memory was a phrase Diane had said once, offhand, over tea: *The Luna Accord. If they ever try to bury you, Karla, you remember there is a law older than any Alpha.*

I reached inside my coat and pulled out the cloth I had sewn into the lining three nights before the ceremony. I already knew what he was going to do. I had been a Luna long enough to read a room.

The cloth still held Lily's scent. Faint. Preserved. Milk. Warm fur. New leaves.

I held it against my sternum until my hands stopped shaking. Then I tucked it back inside, buttoned my coat, and stood up on the road.

Ashford Ridge was northwest. I had a sealed vial of wolfsbane extract in my inner pocket. I had a name for the law. I had my mother's pulse under my fingers.

It was enough to begin.

---

Three days of walking. A border trading post on the second night, where two wolves at the next table spoke of Silverfang without knowing who was listening. Rylee elevated to acting Luna already. The protective wards along the eastern boundary flickering, though *no one is naming the reason aloud.*

I ate everything on my plate. I traded a diagnosis and a treatment plan for a bed and directions. I did not give my name.

On the fourth morning, I stood in front of the gates of Ashford Ridge with two fingers pressed to the inside of my wrist and the suppressant burning faintly under my collarbone. The guards moved to intercept.

I did not flinch.

"My name is Karla Donovan," I said. "Healer bloodline. I am here to request an audience with the Lycan King, and I am carrying information the Council will want to hear."

The taller guard looked at me for a long time.

Behind the gate, somewhere inside the walls, a wolf I had never met began to howl.
